Building (and Testing) Improvised Body Armor

18497 ratings | 1178373 views
You ever been to one of those tile stores that's mixed with a library? Turns out those are just fronts for body armor production lines. Also, Brian and Jason are dumb and you shouldn't try any of this. How you guys wear multiple layers or even jackets in texas is beyond me. I live in north dakota. Here if it hits 40 degrees out comes the tshirts, shorts, and sandals. Texas temps would be death wearing the stuff you guys do. How the hell?

Imagine waking up one morning like you would any other. It’s still dark out, and the world is still very asleep. Thoughts of coffee and setting fire to your workplace fill your mind, as is custom for anybody in your office workforce. As you get out of bed you look torwards your bedroom door to see Jason Murphy slowly walking up to you in the most threatening manner possible. You look closer and realize... He has book and ceramic tile body armor duct taped to his body. You try shooting him with the loaded pistol you keep in your end table for emergencies, but to no avail. He just keeps on droning torwards you, with a unconquerable expression plastered onto his mug, almost as if he can already taste his guaranteed victory over your tender mortal coil. You keep shooting in a feeble attempt to ward him off, but he doesn’t even blink. He is dead set on your demise. Once he makes his way up to your bedside he puts his hand up to your neck and lifts almost effortlessly. As you beg and plead for mercy, he starts constricting, steadily drawing the life out of your body. You can feel yourself losing consciousness by the second, and you finally realize that you are truly done for. As the light slowly fades from your eyes, you hear one last thing. As you die in his hand he mutters, “Power is fleeting. Love is eter-” You are dead before you hear the rest. He had fully succeeded in taking your life, and he hadn’t even broken a sweat in the process.

armor made from mixed layers of flextape and line x would be light and effective.
Yarri Ryan (9 days ago)
Just to clarify the other advantage of the ceramic is to break up bullets so that the kevlar(paper) can catch the now smaller shards

The ceramics is to absorb impact energy, not to stop penetration

You could have tested how much you need to stop a 9mm

I think you could have used just one layer of books to make it smaller, for the same level of protection. But still. Knife and hatchet proof. Nice :D

so wait, you guys are in texas but didnt try to shoot it with an actual firearm? so which one of you is the felon hmmm? lmao
Colin Leppert (2 months ago)
Ceramics actually perfect, as brittle, but hard things break up bullets and reduce their penetration. Then all you need it something to absorb the impact. Well thought out and I'm not even at the part where they tested it

They don't have the right ceramics for body armor. The military uses ceramic plates with steel back parts to make sure the ceramic doesn't pierce the wearer, and it is made out of a tougher clay, and is held together in a near vacuum tight seal that makes sure it doesn't split apart and create lareg air gaps easily.

I made some stab-resistant body armor a bullet would rip right through it but what I did was I literally took some duct tape a 3-ring binder and some paper I got out of a ream I cut the two panels off of the 3-ring binder and basically made a sandwich out of that with about I would say I don't know 50 60 pages maybe 70 of paper and duct taped it all together and took my most razor sharp knife and stabbed it as hard as I could and it put like a dent I even tested axes on it and those only left a small cut

Ceramic breaks up bullets, which is why people put ceramic plates in front of Kevlar vests. The ceramic breaks up the bullet and the Kevlar catches it.

a more practical less duct-tapey armor would be if you but it in a backpack that it barley fit in and put that on your chest. (and/or back)

barely fit so it dosent move around

Lol.... the idea that .45 has good penetration. Not it's not. It has lots of mass and kinetic energy but is almost useless in penetration power.

Hey guys new idea shoot rubber bullets inside
ARGiammarco 27 (7 months ago)
Over a year later and I still want you guys to write Brian’s story in this episode
I don’t know if anyone in the comment section said anything about this, but ceramic is used in body armour to break up a bullet first before the bullet hits metal. Ceramic is not there to stop anything. It’s there to make a bullet easier to stop.
