The battle for Minnesota’s $1 trillion mining jackpot

06:21
Minnesota’s Arrowhead region sits atop a trove of precious metals: mining companies say the area holds four billion tons of raw material like copper and nickel, a haul worth $1 trillion. But local residents and activists are taking a stand against encroaching mining operations, citing the potentially disastrous environmental consequences. Josh Buettner of Iowa Public Television reports.

It is a ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Pure copper is soft and malleable; an exposed surface has a reddish-orange tarnish. It is used as a conductor of heat and electricity, a building material, and a constituent of various metal alloys. The metal and its alloys have been used for thousands of years. In the Roman era, copper was principally mined on Cyprus, hence the origin of the name of the metal as сyprium (metal of Cyprus), later shortened to сuprum. Its compounds are commonly encountered as copper(II) salts, which often impart blue or green colors to minerals such as turquoise and have been widely used historically as pigments. Architectural structures built with copper corrode to give green verdigris (or patina). Decorative art prominently features copper, both by itself and as part of pigments. Copper(II) ions are water-soluble, where they function at low concentration as bacteriostatic substances, fungicides, and wood preservatives. In sufficient amounts, they are poisonous to higher organisms; at lower concentrations it is an essential trace nutrient to all higher plant and animal life. The main areas where copper is found in animals are tissues, liver, muscle and bone. Copper, silver and gold are in group 11 of the periodic table, and they share certain attributes: they have one s-orbital electron on top of a filled d-electron shell and are characterized by high ductility and electrical conductivity. The filled d-shells in these elements do not contribute much to the interatomic interactions, which are dominated by the s-electrons through metallic bonds. Contrary to metals with incomplete d-shells, metallic bonds in copper are lacking a covalent character and are relatively weak. This explains the low hardness and high ductility of single crystals of copper. At the macroscopic scale, introduction of extended defects to the crystal lattice, such as grain boundaries, hinders flow of the material under applied stress thereby increasing its hardness. For this reason, copper is usually supplied in a fine-grained polycrystalline form, which has greater strength than monocrystalline forms. The low hardness of copper partly explains its high electrical (59.6×106 S/m) and thus also high thermal conductivity, which are the second highest among pure metals at room temperature.[4] This is because the resistivity to electron transport in metals at room temperature mostly originates from scattering of electrons on thermal vibrations of the lattice, which are relatively weak for a soft metal.[2] The maximum permissible current density of copper in open air is approximately 3.1×106 A/m2 of cross-sectional area, above which it begins to heat excessively. As with other metals, if copper is placed against another metal, galvanic corrosion will occur. Together with osmium (bluish), and gold (yellow), copper is one of only three elemental metals with a natural color other than gray or silver. Pure copper is orange-red and acquires a reddish tarnish when exposed to air. The characteristic color of copper results from the electronic transitions between the filled 3d and half-empty 4s atomic shells... Most copper is mined or extracted as copper sulfides from large open pit mines in porphyry copper deposits that contain 0.4 to 1.0% copper. Examples include Chuquicamata in Chile, Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, United States and El Chino Mine in New Mexico, United States. According to the British Geological Survey, in 2005, Chile was the top mine producer of copper with at least one-third world share followed by the United States, Indonesia and Peru. The amount of copper in use is increasing and the quantity available is barely sufficient to allow all countries to reach developed world levels of usage.

Exploring The Abandoned Lucky Jim Mine

15:16
Sometimes we find abandoned mines after extensive research and searching. Other times, such as this one, we stumble across an abandoned mine entirely by chance and only learn more about it by researching it AFTER we found it and explored it. This mine falls under the latter category… We had a little difficulty in getting to the mine as can be observed at the start of the video, but we overcame that and got right into exploring and documenting this abandoned mine upon our arrival. I suppose I have a thing for rail and am, therefore, biased, but I love that rail leading out of the mine into the woods… Visually appealing? Yes, very much! As you’ll see, exploring this mine is not something most people would probably want to do as it involves slopping through a great deal of mud and freezing water and, of course, many people probably also do not relish the thought of plunging into the darkness without knowing what is inside anyway. No worries. Just sit back and relax and join us vicariously on our adventure. You’ll spare yourself from contending with the blood, sweat, tears, mosquitoes and mud of getting out there and getting through the mine – not to mention the time and money! I had been out exploring other abandoned mines in the area on the day I discovered this particular mine and was simply curious about a small road leading up a hill. I followed the road in as far as I could and then became curious about a trail leading from the road down to a creek. I followed the trail down and noticed some of the normal indicators for mining activity, which made me really open my eyes and look around. I soon noticed those very cool rails extending out into the woods and, of course, followed them back to the adit. I was too exhausted to explore this mine on that day, but returned later with Mr. McBride to properly assess it. The weather was not very friendly the day we returned, alternating between freezing rain and brilliant sunshine, but we persisted. I saw a quartz vein in the small prospect I went into, but I did not see any quartz veins inside of the main mine. Therefore, I am assuming they pulled the gold out of the abundant sulfides that could be observed inside. Gold in such conditions is often referred to as “invisible gold” and must be carefully processed to be extracted from the underlying rock. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

The first stage of copper ore process inside a metallurgical treatment circuit is copper ore crushing, where the copper ore particles are reduced in dimensions so that copper particles could be efficiently separated from copper ore particles. First the copper ore is blasted, loaded and transported to the primary crushers (copper ore crusher). Then a ore is crushed and screened, using the fine sulfide ore (-0.5 mm) going to froth flotation cells for recovery of copper. After crushing process, the copper ore is send to ball mill for grinding. Within the ball mill, the crushed copper ore will grind the ore to about 0.2 mm with 3-inch steel balls. This copper ore slurry is finally pumped for the flotation deck. Prospecting For Gold & Silver - New High Grade Ore Vein Found

11:53
Sampling an area with extensive outcrop containing viens of solid mineral containing gold, silver, platinum, lead and zinc. We have sampled several other smaller viens in the area but this is the most promising and returning the best values. The ore is found amoungst a schistose host rock with numerous quartz veins and dissemintions in the host rock of pyrite and chalcopyrite. The quartz veins are virtually barren other than the occasional speck or pocket of pyrite. The solid mineral viens mainly consist of a pyritic ore with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite and some galena. We are mostly intrested in the au and ag values, however other minerals in the ore are also if decent grade. Want to help support our videos? REBgold's proprietary bioleaching process recovers valuable metals from crushed ore, neutralizes sulphides causing acid rock drainage and stabilizes toxic elements such as arsenic and cadmium. Here's how the process works: Crushed ore is delivered from a the crushing circuit to a flotation plant. During this process, a concentrate is produced containing sulphide minerals and metals.... 80% of the rock is sent to the tailings pile as harmless rock. The remaining 20% is sulphides containing metals and is sent to a series of bioleach tanks that contain sulphide-loving bacteria.

Urgent: Join tribes, others at Sacred Eagle Rock in Michigan to prevent Kennecott Acid Mine

03:11
American Indians and non-natives are encouraged to visit the northern Michigan campsite that is blocking a sulfide mine - as in sulfuric acid - from being built under Sacred Eagle Rock. Levi Tadgerson, an Anishinaabe man who loves and respects the environment, narrates this video that invites everyone to join the encampment at the base of Eagle Rock - the sooner the better because a confrontation between mine owners, the police and those protecting Sacred Eagle Rock could happen at any moment. Tadgerson is a 22-year-old Northern Michigan University senior and member of Bay Mills Indian Community. In the video, you will see the many amazing things happening to protect Sacred Eagle Rock including an appearance by popular American Indian singer/songwriter Elder Bobby "Bullet" St. Germaine of Iron River, MI - an elder of the Lac Du Flambeau tribe. He sings and leads a thank you drum under the shadow of Sacred Eagle Rock. This video was shot on 4/29/2010. Background Eagle Rock has been a sacred place to hold ceremonies since the Ojibwa tribe was created and was seeded to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) under treaties with the American government. The multi-tribe encampment, that could be raided by mine guards and police at any moment, is blocking the Eagle Mine Project by international mining giant Kennecott Minerals and its parent company Rio Tinto. KBIC member Glen Bressette Jr., 38, of Harvey, Michigan brought a rare legally-permitted Eagle has been received to award feathers to those who honor their tribes by protecting sacred Eagle Rock and other honorable actions. Dozens of people from numerous tribes have spent days at the camp - and many others have brought supplies to the remote site on dirt roads about an hour from any city. The state of Michigan has claimed ownership to the land - but the lease with Kennecott only takes effect when the mine has secured all permits. Opponents say the mine must still get a federal EPA groundwater permit - but under a technicality the mine owners say they do not need the permit and recently put up No Trespassing signs. The American Indians rushed to the sight after Kennecott ordered the arrest of longtime mine opponent Cynthia Pryor of Big Bay, MI on April 20, 2010. Pryor was out for her usual walk on the Yellow Dog Plains when she spotted a bulldozer - and refused to leave saying the mine still had an EPA permit pending. Pryor is a member of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve. Among the Ojibwa tribes from Michigan and Wisconsin on sight are KBIC, Lac Du Flambeau, and Bay Mills Indian Community. As of April 30th, the mine guards has not confronted the campers - but the day before ordered no still or video cameras are allowed. That has campers worried about why what they do not want videotaped or documented - thus nerves are high. When a reporter arrived a short time later - the campers allowed him on the sight and this story was videotaped. 2011 Showdown on the Yellow Dog Plains Part 2: Putting Mich. Lawmakers, Kennecott, Media on notice

07:06
Opponents of sulfide "acid" mining in Michigan's Upper Peninsula held strategy meetings in mid-February to galvanize their single ideal: There is no place for destructive sulfide mining on the Yellow Dog Plains or anywhere in the Great Lakes. Opponents of Kennecott Minerals and their subsidiaries have teamed with a legend in the battle against those committing environmental crimes. Environmental warrior Lois Gibbs was dubbed the "Mother of the Superfund" after she successfully battled chemical companies in the infamous Love Canal saga. Save the Wild U.P. and other sulfide mining opponents met with Boston attorney Peter B. Sessa, who represents the nonprofit Gibbs founded and is executive director - The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) in Falls Church, Virginia. For several days in February 2011, Boston attorney Peter Sessa, representing an environmental nonprofit founded by Lois Gibbs, helped sulfide mining opponents galvanize their battle plans Groups opposed to the mine will unseat and defeat all elected officials who support the mine. No Democrat or Republican will be spared as groups seek to expose criminal activities involving Kennecott, its lobbyists and Michigan's greedy elected officials. Gibbs believes the pristine beauty of northern Michigan is worth saving and said the numerous sulfide mines planned will leave huge areas of the U.P. a moonscape. The Anishinaabe nation is sickened that Kennecott Eagle Minerals is planning to dynamite through sacred Eagle Rock in the spring of 2011 -- the desecration of a sacred religious, spiritual and ceremonial site for the Ojibwa. Ojibwa singer Bobby Bullett says placing the entrance of the sulfide mine in Eagle Rock shows a sickness of mind in humans and international corporations have reached. In fact, all of mines opened by Kennecott Minerals have turned into environmental disasters -- and the company has been accused of murder and human rights violations. Many Ojibwa believe that the desecration of Eagle Rock will lead to death and disaster for all those who enter the mine -- that opponents hope to halt in its tracks through ongoing litigation and new tactics that will be unveiled in 2011. Kennecott Lies to Eagle Rock Campers About EPA Requirements

00:57
Kennecott's lobbyist/"community relations" staff, Matt Johnson lies to campers at Eagle Rock about federal EPA requirements for Kennecott's Eagle Mine. Johnson claims that the EPA asked Kennecott to withdraw a permit for an underground injection control permit (UIC), which is not true. Immediately before working for Kennecott, Johnson worked for Governor Granholm, representing the people of the Upper Peninsula for her while her office oversaw Kennecott's permit process.

What is GALENA? What does GALENA mean? GALENA meaning, definition & explanation

06:11
What is GALENA? What does GALENA mean? GALENA meaning - GALENA definition - GALENA explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead(II) sulfide. It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver. Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms. It is often associated with the minerals sphalerite, calcite and fluorite. Galena is the main ore of lead, used since ancient times. Because of its somewhat low melting point, it was easy to liberate by smelting. In some deposits galena contains about 1–2% silver, a byproduct that far outweighs the main lead ore in revenue. Galena deposits often also contain significant amounts of silver as included silver sulfide mineral phases or as limited solid solution within the galena structure. These argentiferous galenas have long been the most important ore of silver. Galena deposits are found worldwide in various environments. Noted deposits include those at Freiberg in Saxony; Cornwall, the Mendips in Somerset, Derbyshire, and Cumberland in England; the Madan, Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria; the Sullivan Mine of British Columbia; Broken Hill and Mount Isa in Australia; and the ancient mines of Sardinia. Galena also occurs in North African countries and at Mount Hermon in Northern Israel. In the United States, it occurs most notably in the Mississippi Valley type deposits of the Lead Belt in southeastern Missouri, and in the Driftless Area of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The economic importance of galena to the early history of the Driftless Area was so great that one of the towns in the region was named Galena, Illinois. Galena also was a major mineral of the zinc-lead mines of the tri-state district around Joplin in southwestern Missouri and the adjoining areas of Kansas and Oklahoma. Galena is also an important ore mineral in the silver mining regions of Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Montana. Of the latter, the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho was most prominent. Galena is the official state mineral of the U.S. states of Missouri and Wisconsin; the former mining town of Galena, Kansas takes its name from deposits of this mineral. Derbyshire in the UK was one of the main areas where galena was mined. The largest documented crystal of galena is composite cubo-octahedra from the Great Laxey Mine, Isle of Man, measuring 25 cm × 25 cm × 25 cm (10 in × 10 in × 10 in). Galena belongs to the octahedral sulfide group of minerals that have metal ions in octahedral positions, such as the iron sulfide pyrrhotite and the nickel arsenide niccolite. The galena group is named after its most common member, with other isometric members that include manganese bearing alabandite and niningerite.

Examples include: Chuquicamata in Chile, Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah and El Chino Mine in New Mexico, US. Themon abundance of copper found within crustal rocks is around 68 ppm by mass, and 22 ppm by atoms. In , Chile was the top mine producer of copper with no less than one-third world share followed by america, Indonesia and Peru, reports the British Geological Survey. This copper ore slurry is finally pumped for the flotation deck with the fine sulfide ore (~-0.5 mm) going to froth flotation cells for recovery of copper. Painter Wants Debates, Not TV Ads, In Race With Sen. Smith

09:43
Former Republican Richard Painter says he has asked for debates with Sen. Tina Smith (DFL-MN) multiple times. "So far no go. I will fly to Washington to debate her if she doesn't have time to come here." Painter lost the DFL endorsement to Smith earlier this month but is running against her in the primary. He sees debates as a way to fight the influence of money in politics. "Then instead of running a bunch of TV ads, which really don't say anything, you'd have candidates actually debate the issues." Smith was appointed to the office when Senator Al Franken resigned earlier this year. Painter is taking his campaign to people who will vote in the DFL (Democratic Farmer Labor) August 14th primary. He met with about 60 voters at Minnetonka City Hall on June 26. The winner of the primary will likely face Republican Karin Housley in the November general election. He spoke with The UpTake after his presentation on the Polymet plan to extract copper nickle from sulfide ore near the Boundary Waters. "We do taconite mining which is iron mining, and that's our mining tradition on the iron range. It's not called the copper nickle range. And that's for a reason. We haven't tried this before and it's potentially an environmental catastrophe." Painter says Polymet is a complex web of companies with questionable environmental records with financial ties to Russian Oligarchs.

http://CopperMineNevada.blogspot.com Considerable volume of low grade copper ore was mined 1970s-1980s in the open pit. The underground drift still has high grade 4%-9% ore deposits equal to the amount mined. Host rock is limestone hundreds of feet thick shot with pellets of Chalcopyrite copper ore. It's everywhere! First mine I been to where ore is everywhere of all kinds! The mine also has some silver and gold is on the other side of the ridge. Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the tetragonal system. It has the chemical composition CuFeS2. It has a brassy to golden yellow color http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalcopyrite The higher grade Chalco has orange-copper color. http://CopperMineNevada.blogspot.com

Sessa, who represents the nonprofit Gibbs founded and is executive director: The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) in Falls Church, Virginia. In February 2011, Boston attorney Peter Sessa, representing an environmental nonprofit founded by Lois Gibbs, helped sulfide mining opponents galvanize their battle plans Groups opposed to the mine will unseat and defeat all elected officials who support the mine. Many Ojibwa believe that the desecration of Eagle Rock will lead to death and disaster for all those who enter the mine - that opponents hope to halt in its tracks through ongoing litigation and new tactics that will be unveiled in 2011.
