This week on Industrial Minerals TV: Imerys reports increased profits for 2012 although it expects to face "persistent uncertainties" through the early part of the coming year while Rio Tinto's new CEO says the company will have "an unrelenting focus on pursuing greater value for shareholders" going forward after posting a $3bn loss for 2012. Also this week, First Bauxite signs Letters of Intent for with refractory manufacturers in North America and Europe for 70,000 tonnes per annum of sintered bauxite from the company's Bonasika project in Guyana; the global graphite market disagrees on pricing movements; and Russia's Magnezit Group confirms that it is operating as normal after its fused magnesia production facility close to the city of Chelyabinsk was caught in a meteorite shower over the Urals.

Igneous rock (derived from the Latin word ignis meaning fire) is one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Igneous rock may form with or without crystallization, either below the surface as intrusive (plutonic) rocks or on the surface as extrusive (volcanic) rocks. This magma can be derived from partial melts of pre-existing rocks in either a planet's mantle or crust. Typically, the melting is caused by one or more of three processes: an increase in temperature, a decrease in pressure, or a change in composition. The Great Rift Valley is part of an intra-continental ridge system that runs through Kenya from north to south. It is part of the Gregory Rift, the eastern branch of the East African Rift, which starts in Tanzania to the south and continues northward into Ethiopia. It was formed on the "Kenyan Dome" a geographical upwelling created by the interactions of three major tectonics: the Arabian, Nubian, and Somalian plates. In the past, it was seen as part of a "Great Rift Valley" that ran from Madagascar to Syria. Most of the valley falls within the former Rift Valley Province. The valley contains the Cherangani Hills and a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active. The climate is mild, with temperatures usually below 28 °C (82 °F). Most rain falls during the March–June and October–November periods. The Tugen Hills to the west of Lake Baringo contain fossils preserved in laval flows from the period 14 to 4 million years ago.
