The Smith Mine Disaster of 1943 – near Red Lodge, Montana MT. From the Billings, MT. Gazette, Feb 26, 2013: Saturday paid time-and-a-half at the Montana Coal and Iron Co.’s Smith Mine between Bearcreek and Washoe. Miners who had just emerged from the Great Depression of the 1930s eagerly worked the overtime weekend shift. They had the added incentive of doing their part to keep the World War II war machine running. Although many were immigrants, they were a patriotic lot, according to Matt Stump, a senior in history at Montana State University Billings. Most had the cost of war bonds deducted from their wages, he said. As 1942 drew to a close, Frank Mourich, a native of Austria, had increased his purchase of war bonds to $75 of his $132 biweekly paycheck, Stump found while researching his senior thesis. Daylight was about an hour old when Mourich and 76 other coal miners entered the mouth of the Smith Mine on Feb. 27, 1943. On that bright winter morning, they descended about 7,000 feet into the No. 3 vein and went to work. No one knows whether any of these men intent on their work noticed an unusual buildup of methane gas or coal dust, and there are only theories about what ignited an explosion so powerful that it blew a 20-ton locomotive off its tracks. Management got its first notification of the disaster below from hoisting engineer Alex Hawthorne, 55, who telephoned the surface and said: “There’s something wrong down here. I’m getting out.” All three survivors, who were described in the newspaper as “very sick,” were rushed to a hospital in Red Lodge, five miles away. Also hospitalized early that day were eight volunteers who were searching for survivors. Above ground, miners’ families kept a calm, hopeful watch, The Gazette reported. Meanwhile, the Red Cross, already in a high state of preparedness because of the war, quickly established a canteen to feed the crowd gathering at the mine. Within an hour of the first call for help, the organization had set up a 50-bed emergency hospital in Red Lodge, with the assistance of local high school students. On Sunday, Feb. 28, experienced miners told reporters that they believed that there was just a “thousand to one chance” trapped miners were still alive. The Butte specialists, who were equipped with oxygen masks, could stay underground as long as six hours at a time, but they were unfamiliar with the mine. Regular mine employees with only filter masks could not go as deep into the tunnel. Desperate to save family members and friends, local miners stayed down as long as they could. The rescue effort was grim. “When exhausted rescuers come out of the mine, most of them are dazed and groggy from the effects of the gas for hours afterward," The Gazette reported. "They are taken to the Red Lodge emergency hospital and put to bed. Drugs are administered to quiet their nerves, but many grow hysterical.” Six bodies had been recovered by Sunday. But miners’ wives kept the faith. “Calm and steadfast, unalterable in belief that their men will come out all right, they waited side by side on benches in the improvised canteen set up in the machine shop,” Gazette reporter Kathryn Wright wrote. “Many have been there since the disaster to meet the boys ‘when they come out.’ ” Robert Wakenshaw’s wife, awaiting word of her husband and her father-in-law, held her head high and her shoulders erect as she told Wright: “I know they’re coming out. I have all the confidence in the world.” Seventeen-year-old Martha Barovich knew her widowed father, Sam, would emerge safely. In agonizing slowness over the next week, the number of bodies began to mount. The last — that of mine foreman Elmer Price, 53 — came out on March 7. He left a wife and five children. The final casualty of the disaster, Matt Woodward, a rescue worker suffering the effects of his efforts, died April 9. His death brought the total to 75. Sled dogs have a long and illustrious career in Alaska, as shared in this episode of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil with author/historian Laurel Downing Bill. This segment first aired on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on Dec. 14, 2017. Wintertime in Alaska is synonymous with dog mushing. Historically many different races test the strength, stamina and ability of mushers and their teams from December through February. But long before men and dogs teamed up to race across Alaska, dogs proved themselves in this rugged country. Sled dogs have a long and illustrious history from the early days of Native settlements to the gold-rush booms during the 1890-1900s. When the Russians arrived on Alaska’s shores in the mid-1700s they found dogs in the villages. Natives of Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland and Siberia used dogs as winter draft animals for centuries. Russians found Alaska Natives using dogs to haul sleds loaded with fish, game, wood and other items. The Natives ran ahead of the dogs as they guided them on the yearly trips between villages and fish and hunting camps. Russians improved the dog sled system by adding handlebars to sleds and harnessing dog teams in single file or in pairs. They also trained the dogs to follow commands given by sled drivers and introduced the “lead dog” or leader. Russian exploration via dog teams was limited to Alaska’s coasts, as well as along some rivers, and followed existing Native trails between villages. Both Natives and Russians found frozen rivers also made useful winter trails. Extensive use of dogs for long-distance transportation developed as gold discoveries were made in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Stampeders quickly learned that dog teams were worth their weight in gold. Thousands of dogs were imported from the Lower 48 to help prospectors and adventurers reach the gold fields. By the turn of the century, dog teams were helping cheechakos blaze new trails to establish law and order, develop mail routes and transport gold-crazed prospectors to new strikes. When winter came, some miners hooked up their dogs and pulled Yukon sleds loaded with needed supplies to make camp at promising locations. They then spent the winter thawing ground and digging gravel. At spring breakup, the prospectors sluiced the hoped-for gold from pay dirt. At season’s end they built rafts or poling boats and floated with their dogs back downstream to the trading posts or towns. This is the way the land was prospected. The men and dogs blazed trails throughout the Turnagain Arm Mining District as well as from Valdez to Fairbanks, from Seward to the various prospects in Southcentral Alaska and in Alaska’s Interior and Seward Peninsula. By 1905, dog teams were carrying mail over 180 miles of trail between Seward and Susitna Station, a steamboat stop on the lower Susitna River that served as a supply point for dozens of mines in the foothills of the Alaska Range. The system of trails extended as goldfields were discovered to the north in the Talkeetna Mountains and the Yentna River drainage. And when gold was discovered along the Innoko River around 1906-1907, another trail was forged that would become one of the most famous sled dog trails in history – the Iditarod Trail. http://www.ktva.com/daybreak/ http://www.AuntPhilsTrunk.com http://www.Facebook.com/LaurelDowning Bill https://youtu.be/eDKn5kCgKvI LaurelDowningBillAuntPhil

It is well with my soul, It is well, it is well with my soul. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul. My sin—oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!— My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live: If Jordan above me shall roll, No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul. But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait, The sky, not the grave, is our goal; Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord! Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul! And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul. Directed by Montana author/filmmaker Annick Smith, the film traces Hugo's life from his grim childhood, through his experiences as a bombardier in World War II, to his creative writing professorship at the University of Montana.. With intimate moments from Hugo's life, the film intricately ties his writings to the western places he loves the most: saloons, fishing holes, abandoned towns, and a home in Rattlesnake Canyon. The rhythms, emotions, humor and rollicking language of Montana's greatest poet comes alive to audiences who never had the good luck of knowing him in person. But like in California, there is a push against prospectors who move rocks and mud to look for gold. In this particular part of the creek, prospectors have stood against fellow prospectors over their "rights" to prospect this land. The land here requires owner permission to walk on or is considered trespassing unless below the high water mark. that is not the end of a prospector's shovel that you see in some of the shot taken...

Are we about to hear that ancient ruins have been found in Antarctica? Is there an Alliance working to defeat the greatest threat humanity has ever faced on earth? Could the Antarctic Atlantis be part of a full or partial disclosure? Join David Wilcock on a thrill ride of discovery, beginning with Part One where he presents data on the Secret Space Program and shares the stage with legendary insider Corey Goode. This is the best public summary David and Corey have done of this amazing story that has captivated the UFO community. Part Two begins at the 53-minute mark, with David connecting the dots between intel from multiple insiders to arrive at a stunning conclusion -- that we are on the verge of major new releases of information that will transform everything we thought we knew about life on earth. A civilization of "Pre-Adamite" giants with elongated skulls appears to have crash-landed on a continent we now call Antarctica some 55,000 years ago. Various groups we collectively call the Alliance are working to defeat the Cabal / Illuminati / New World Order, thus making the headlines crazier by the day. If the Alliance succeeds, their plan is now to begin the disclosure process by telling us there was a civilization in Antarctica. We are already seeing multiple, compelling hints of this in corporate media. Find out what the insiders are telling us and help spread the word! This is a two-and-a-half-hour excerpt from David's Friday and Saturday presentations at the Conscious Life Expo 2017. In their original form they run six hours. David also spoke for three hours on Monday, presenting an incredible new model of the Cosmos based on sacred geometry -- and proving that the Sun is going to release a DNA-transforming burst of energy in our near future. Be sure to check out their video right after you watch this one! This is Weird Darkness – where you’ll find creepypastas, ghost stories, unsolved mysteries, crytptids like Bigfoot, and other stories of the strange and bizarre. Feel free to share your own creepy story at WeirdDarkness.com, I might use it in a future episode! Now.. sit back, turn down the lights, and come with me into the Weird Darkness! It all started with a bunch of footprints at a construction site. Or at least the modern-day fascination with “Bigfoot” did. Stories of hairy giants in the woods and wandering “wild men” had been a part of American lore for nearly two centuries by the time the nickname “Bigfoot” was coined in the late 1950s. But it was then, with the advent of television and the modern media, that chasing down giants in the woods became a national craze. It was the spring of 1957 and a road construction project was underway near Bluff Creek in northern California. The project was run by a contractor named Ray Wallace and his brother, Wilbur. They hired thirty men that summer to work on the project and by late in the season, Wilbur Wallace reported that something had been throwing around some metal oil drums at the work site. When winter arrived that year, cold weather brought the work to a halt, even though only ten miles of road had been completed. In early spring 1958, some odd tracks were discovered near the Mad River close to Korbel, California. Some of the locals believed they were bear tracks. As it happened, this was close to another work site that was managed by the Wallace brothers. Later on that spring, work started up again on the road near Bluff Creek. A number of new men were hired, including Jerry Crew, who drove more than two hours each weekend so he could be home with his family. Ten more miles of road were constructed, angling up across the face of a nearby mountain. On August 3, 1958, Wilbur Wallace stated that something threw a seven-hundred-pound spare tire to the bottom of a deep gully near the work site. This incident was reported later in the month, after the discovery of the footprints. On August 27, Jerry Crew arrived for work early in the morning and found giant, manlike footprints pressed into the dirt all around his bulldozer. He was at first upset by the discovery, thinking that someone was playing a practical joke on him, but then he decided to report what he found to Wilbur Wallace. At this point, the footprints had not been made public. That occurred on September 21, when Mrs. Jess Bemis, the wife of one of the Bluff Creek work crew, wrote a letter to Andrew Genzoli, the editor of a local newspaper. Genzoli published her husband's "Big Foot" story and caught the attention of others in the area. One of these was Betty Allen, a newspaper reporter who suggested in a late September column that plaster casts should be made of the footprints. She had already talked to local Native Americans and interviewed residents about hairy giants in the area. She convinced Genzoli to run other stories and letters about Bigfoot. This would be the beginning of a story that would capture the imagination of America. On October 1 and 2, Jerry Crew discovered more tracks, very similar to the first ones. In response to the new discovery, two workers quit and Wilbur Wallace allegedly introduced his brother Ray to the situation for the first time, bringing him out to show him the tracks. On the day after the last tracks were found, Jerry Crew made plaster casts of the footprints, with help from his friend Bob Titmus and reporter Betty Allen. He was irritated that people were making fun of him and wanted to offer the casts as evidence that he wasn’t making the whole thing up. On October 5, Andrew Genzoli published his now-famous story about "Bigfoot." It was picked up worldwide by the wire services, and soon the term was being used in general conversation.

When Senator Baucus wrote Obamacare and Senator Tester cast the deciding vote for it, they hadn't bothered to ask Montanans what they thought about it. They didn't ask seniors about cutting $500 billion from Medicare. They didn't ask small businesses about thousands of pages of job-killing regulations and fees. And they didn't ask young people about adding trillions of dollars of debt that they'll have to repay. I opposed this law because I asked these questions at open, public listening sessions across the state. Now, after two years, our health care costs are higher than they have ever been, while the projected cost of the law has doubled. That's why Montanans support repealing this law and replacing it with common sense solutions to rein in costs and improve access.

As a kid Steve Rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool. As an adult, he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife Shirley. After a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in Northern California, they bought two shipping containers, hired an excavator and got to work. Doing most of the work themselves, their finished home cost them $30,000 (solar included). Their 640-square-foot space cost them less than $50 per square foot. Rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs, the savings only begin with construction. With a solar-powered well, a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light, they haven’t had any city water or electric bills since 2002. Winter temperatures in their home (even during 20 degrees outside) never fall below 62 degrees (an RV catalytic heater is sufficient for heating). Even when the temperature rises to 110 outside in the summer, their home has never risen above 82 degrees. When they asked the county about permitting they were told they “didn’t have a permit for burying containers”. They have been inspected since completing their home and they have a permitted septic system and a permitted well, just no permit for a single family dwelling. September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Work on the third Greater Shepparton City Council landfill site at Cosgrove went off with a bang today as blasting commenced to prepare the site for the next stage of construction. Council owns and operates the Cosgrove Landfill Facility, located approximately 20 kilometres to the east of Shepparton. As the current active landfill site (Cosgrove 2) is nearing the end of useful life, Council commenced the construction of the Cosgrove 3 Landfill site in February 2017, ensuring continuous landfill services for the community. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said the present construction phase involved drilling, blasting, haulage and stockpiling 2.2 million tonnes of rock and soil to create a subgrade layer which is the foundation of waste containment systems. “The awarded contractor is utilising large scale mining equipment to meet the expectations and timelines specified by the Council.” The equipment utilised in this large scale excavation includes: •Four 65 tonne trucks hauling over 13,000 tonnes per day; •One 190 tonne excavator with a 12 cubic metre bucket (approx 25 tonne rock) loading the trucks hauling the rock; •Two drill rigs drilling over 800m per day; •Explosive trucks carrying 9 tonne of explosives to blast approximately 29,700 tonnes of material. “The footage captured today was a blast that created approximately 59,400 tonne of fragmented material for haulage,” said Mr Bowmaker. “Nineteen tonnes of explosives were utilised in a very skilled manner to create a profile for cell construction design using best practice blasting.” Please note blasting was carried out on a closed site following best practice for this activity. Members of the public are reminded that there is no access at the site which is strictly controlled.

Attend June 3, 2010 Stand for the Land Rally at Michigan Capitol to protest Ojibwa arrests, destruction of Yellow Dog Plains by Kennecott Minerals sulfide mine To protest the arrest of two Ojibwa at sacred Eagle Rock by international mining giant Kennecott Minerals, please attend the Stand for the Land peaceful rally on (this) Thursday, June 3, 2010 on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing. To Michigan's Ojibwa Eagle Rock is known as Migi zii wa sin. Ojibwa and many tribes and environment groups want to protect Eagle Rock and the yellow Dog Plains from a sulfide mine being built by Kennecot Eagle Minerals near Big Bay in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. On May 27, Kennecott ordered a huge raid by heavily armed police on the campers at eagle Rock arresting two members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Native American and non-native campers had spent a month protecting sacred Eagle Rock beginning April 23. Eagle Rock (Song for the People) By Drew Nelson Sun breaks over the Yellow Dog call the thunder down feel the wind rush against my face sound of the children breaks the stillness of the morning red tail rises not a mile from this place all through the night they kept the fire burning all through the night they sang call the directions, put tobacco down prayers and smoke on the wind Chorus: Here at Eagle Rock we will take our stand Here at Eagle Rock we will pray for the healing of our people and the healing of our land there's a fire burning in our hearts Ishkoday (Anishinaabe for sacred fire) Ishkoday Ishkoday For a thousand years this place has been sacred it will be for a thousand more all those who lover her cry all my relations see the old ones sing see the young ones grow Chorus repeats: There is a law higher than any government places more important than a mine a love that is greater than any corporation ask the Eagle, ask the Bear, Ask the Pines. Chorus repeats Three brave American Indian women from Baraga, MI started the encampment at sacred Eagle Rock at sunset on April 23, 2010. They are KBIC members Charlotte Loonsfoot, 37, and Chalsea Smith, 20, and Georgenia Earring of the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux tribe in South Dakota. The camp was triggered by mine officials ordering the trespassing arrest three days earlier (April 20) of non-native environmentalist Cynthia Pryor of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve Over the next month campers would build lean-tos, start several campfires including the sacred Grandfather Fire, pitch dozens of tents, pray, plant the Eagle Rock Memorial Garden, host the KBIC Tribal Council meeting (May 10), hear from many healers and elders including popular Native American singer "Bobby Bullet" St. Germaine (Lac Du Flambeau Tribe) and Lee Sprague (Little River Band of Ottawa Indians), and create a kitchen to store tons of food and other supplies donated by supporters. A massive police raid began about 9 a.m. on May 27 as dozens of heavily armed state and local law enforcement officers swopped down on the camp at the order of officials with Kennecott Eagle Minerals. Two members of Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve arrived moments before the raid to warn four campers that police were on their way. Arrested Keweenaw Bay Indian Community members Chris Chosa, 28, and Charlotte Loonsfoot, 37, both of Baraga, Mich. The other two campers present for the raid were Kalvin Hartwig (Sault Ste. Marie Band of Chippewa), and Catherine Parker of Marquette -- were ordered by police and mice security to leave with their vehicles. In the past, provincial resource ministries undertook consultation obligations primarily on a single-ministry basis and with individual First Nation bands. But in 2007, three provincial resource ministries and six coastal First Nations entered into a pilot agreement where consultation was streamlined into one process. The pilot was so successful that a more comprehensive agreement the Nanwakolas Strategic Engagement Agreement (SEA) was approved by Cabinet in 2009. This SEA significantly reduces the consultation burden for both the Province and participating First Nations.

Please click “Show More” to read an excerpt from my new book ‘Painted Blazes’ Hiking the Appalachian trail with Loner. Available on Amazon… I hope it entertains, educates, and encourages people to hike! Please enjoy, like, sub, share, and spread the word! Begin excerpt: In New Jersey, I stopped for a moment at the Delaware Water Gap National Park Visitor Center. There, I bought postcards and had them canceled with the special ink stamps they use for those little AT passports some thru-hikers carry. HIKER TIP: AT Passports. Document your journey by collecting personalized ink stamps from hostels, outfitters, longtime trail angels, post offices (with purchase of a one cent stamp), hiker famous restaurants, etc. $7 / 1 oz. Sunfish Pond, with white clouds reflecting in the water like a mirror, was too beautiful to walk by without stopping. This 41-acre oasis was left here by the Wisconsin Glacier during the last ice age, and is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of New Jersey. Adding baby blueberries to my Cheerios, I soaked my dogs in the cool, clear water. I even dozed off a little as deer played in the shallows. Threatened in 1965 by a proposed reservoir, protest hikes involving hundreds of people overwhelmed the owners, a power company, who donated it to the state. Sunfish Pond was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1970. These shores were once covered with stone cairn sculptures that protruded out into the lake, but vandals have knocked them over and only a few small rock piles remain. It was over 80° and some tried to take a swim, but could only stand the chilly water for a few moments before shrieking and running out. Signs informed us of many rules. #4… “No Swimming.” It’s unfortunate there are so many rules on a wilderness trail. Also against the rules and strictly prohibited in New Jersey: fires of any kind. Local law enforcement takes this offense very seriously! I know, because two armed police officers walked up, deep in the woods, and interviewed me for several minutes. Apparently, someone had reported an unresponsive hiker sleeping next to a smoldering campfire, and I fit the description: “A white male in black shorts, with a beard.” Well then, that narrows it down to about 90% of hikers on the trail!
