The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab Region, Pakistan, which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is Pakistan's largest and oldest salt mine and the world's second largest. It is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule. After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum of about 99% pure halite. Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons. The Khewra Salt Mine is also known as Mayo Salt Mine, in honour of Lord Mayo, who visited it as Viceroy of India. The mine is a part of a salt range that originated about 800 million years ago, when evaporation of a shallow sea followed by geological movement formed a salt range that stretched for about 300 kilometers (185 miles). The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander the Great crossed the Jhelum and Mianwali region during his Indian campaign. The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones. Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia. On the downfall of the Mughal empire, the mine was taken over by Sikhs. Hari Singh Nalwa, the Sikh Commander-in-Chief, shared the management of the Salt Range with Gulab Singh, the Raja of Jammu. The former controlled the Warcha mine, while the latter held Khewra. The salt quarried during Sikh rule was both eaten and used as a source of revenue. In 1872, some time after they had taken over the Sikhs' territory, the British developed the mine further. They found the mining to have been inefficient, with irregular and narrow tunnels and entrances that made the movement of labourers difficult and dangerous. The supply of water inside the mine was poor, and there was no storage facility for the mined salt. The only road to the mine was over difficult, rocky terrain. To address these problems the government levelled the road, built warehouses, provided a water supply, improved the entrances and tunnels, and introduced a better mechanism for excavation of salt. Penalties were introduced to control salt smuggling. While working with Geological Survey of India in the 1930s and 1940s, Birbal Sahni found evidence of angiosperms, gymnosperms and insects from the Cambrian period inside the mine. Location Khewra Salt Mine is situated in Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of Jhelum District. Located about 200 km (125 miles) from Islamabad and Lahore, it is accessed via the M2 motorway, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) off the Lilla interchange while going towards Pind Dadan Khan on the Lilla road. The mine is in mountains that are part of a salt range, a mineral-rich mountain system extending about 200 km from the Jhelum river south of Pothohar Plateau to where the Jhelum river joins the Indus river. Khewra mine is about 288 meters (945 feet) above sea level and about 730 meters (2400 feet) into the mountain from the mine entrance. The underground mine covers an area of 110 km2 (43 sq. miles).

Many chemical pesticides can prove unsafe for the environment or may make fruits and vegetables unsafe for consumption, however. Thankfully, there are many homemade, organic options for you to turn to in your war against pests. Remedy 1 using chilies & Garlic • Combine 1/2 cup (113 grams) of hot peppers with 1/2 cup (113 grams) of garlic cloves or onions. You may also use both onions and garlic. All the vegetables should be chopped prior to use • Blend the vegetables together in a blender to form a thick, chunky paste. • Add the vegetable paste to half a liter of warm water mixing the ingredients together Thoroughly. • Pour the solution into a plastic or glass container and allow it to sit for 24 hours. If possible, keep it in a sunny location. If not, at least keep the mixture in a warm spot. • Next, Pour the solution through a strainer, removing the vegetables and collecting the vegetable-infused water into another container. This water is your pesticide. • Pour your pesticide into a squirt bottle and spray on the affected plants Remedy 2 using orange peels • Peel an orange and Place the peels into a glass container and pour 2 cups (500 milliliters) of boiling water over the peels, Allowing the solution to sit in a warm spot for 24 hours. • Next, Pour the solution into a strainer, removing the peels and saving the citrus-infused water • Add a few drops of castile soap. Peppermint-scented castile soap may prove especially effective. Mix the solution thoroughly to combine • Pour the pesticide into a large squirt bottle and Spray the entire plant to ward off most soft-bodied pests Remedy 3 Using neem • Combine 15 milliliters of neem oil with 1/2 teaspoon mild soap. Many believe neem oil, which comes from a bitter tree leaf, to be one of the most effective natural pesticides in existence • Mix the neem and soap into 2 liters of warm water Stirring slowly but thoroughly. • Pour the pesticide into a spray bottle and spray on spots where you can clearly see pests or signs of pests. Remedy 4 using tobacco • Mix 1 cup of tobacco into 2 liters of water. • Sit the mixture out in the sun or in warm location, allowing it to rest for 24 hours. • Check the color of the mixture. Ideally, the pesticide will look similar to the hue of a light tea. If it is too dark, dilute it with water. If it is too light to see, allow it to sit an additional few hours • Add 3 tablespoons of mild liquid dish soap to the solution and Mix thoroughly. • Pour the mixture into a large squirt bottle. A story about the salt workers of the Rann of Kutch, working under very difficult conditions in India's salt desert, in Gujarat state. The Little Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh located in the Western Indian State of Gujarat in India. Far from being known around the world, even most people in India are not aware of its existence. There are no roads in the Rann. To travel here, one has to make ones way through its gigantic mud flats. This salt-bearing wilderness spreads over 5,000 sq kms and is also known as 'Survey Number Zero' because no land survey has been conducted here since the end of British rule in India. Just 600 kms from Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, this land is unknown to most. With its unique geography of a vast desolate landscape, it makes for a very distinct forest without trees. Despite its bleak countryside it is an important ecological terrain for wildlife due to its rich biodiversity. Comprising of thousands of kilometers of barren land, the Little Rann provides a safe haven to a shocking number of local and migratory birds, the endangered wild ass who's only home now is the Little Rann, and other rare and beautiful creatures. The other living creatures found in this arid land are the Agariyas or the Salt Farmers. Surrounded by mounds of tones of white salt crystals, one can easily spot them in the middle of the Rann. In the monsoon, the Arabian Sea invades the Gulf of Kutch, blanketing the muddy flatland under knee--deep water for four months hence making it saline. A set of notifications for the Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch was issued in 1973 under the Gujarat Wild Animals and Wild Birds Protection Act. This is what sowed the seeds of the present conflict in the Rann. It was proposed that the Sanctuary would take up an area of 4840.899 sq. kms. The second notification came in 1978 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, taking the total area of the sanctuary to 4,953 sq. kms and subsequently covering even more area in The Rann. Ever since the sanctuary was declared a bio-reserve, the salt farmers have been asked to vacate their saltpans, as their profession is supposedly a hindrance to the well being of the Sanctuary. Legally speaking, any economic activity inside a bio reserve is also prohibited. The fishermen too have begun facing similar problems. The wild ass has flourished in the Little Rann over the years, say the activists. According to the Gujarat Ecological Education and research Foundation, the population of the wild ass has been increasing gradually since the 1990's and a 2010 survey stated, "There is no human-animal conflict. The salt workers, who have lived here for centuries, have co-existed peacefully with the wildlife". Salt farmers cannot establish any legal right over the land which is now included in the Wild Ass Sanctuary, without any official survey or document. This has proved a threat to their livelihood for nearly three decades now. In an endeavor to help the Agariyas, supporting NGO's have dug out a historic 'farmaan' or ordinance issued by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb from the 17th century in which the saltpan workers find a mention. For 8 months after the monsoon, the farmers live in the middle of the desert putting up with the chilly cold of the winter and the crippling heat of the summer. The salt they produce is "cultivated salt" which is a painstaking, tiresome process, as compared to the other salt making techniques used around the world today. Why do they continue with this technique? Simply because it is the only method they know. For nearly 600 years their ancestors have been producing salt in this region. Herein lies the exploitation factor: the merchants realize their dependence on this profession, and heavily underpay for months of manual labour in extreme climatic conditions. Barring certain patches, the soil in the Little Rann is terribly saline, and the production of most other crops is nearly impossible. http://cuttlefishcountry.com BHP Billiton are expanding their Olympic Dam mine to a massive scale operation in Roxby Downs, South Australia. Not content with drawing 42 megalitres of water from the Great Artesian Basin for free each day (they currently extract 35 megalitres) the mining multinational has proposed to build a desalination plant to supply extra water to the mine. The Point Lowly Peninsula is BHP's favoured location for the plant, due to cost and convenience of location while little effort has been spent surveying the reduced environmental impact of relocating the facility elsewhere. BHP have rationalised the location by pointing out the speed at which the current moves past the peninsula and the depth of the water, but have failed to pay due attention to the probable accumulation of salinity due to the dynamics of an 'inverse estuary' far from open ocean. The current will sweep the hypersaline waste up the Gulf (into the closed system) and will only disperse the brine towards the open ocean less than half the time it's busy outputting. Dodge tides are also a problem for the dispersal of hypersaline waste water, and for 3-5 days of every month, the tide is virtually still, allowing great upwellings of saline solution which could easily contaminate the chosen breeding grounds of the Giant Australian Cuttlefish. Nearby fish nurseries including those supporting Snapper, squid and other species are also at risk. Oceanographer Jochen Kaempf from Flinders University has openly criticised the modelling employed by BHP's Environmental Impact Study, and his knowledge is also accessible here on Youtube, and he is one of man scientists alarmed at BHP's dismissive attitude towards the need for further scientific scrutiny. In this interview, Professor Bronwyn Gillanders of the Earth and Environmental Sciences School at the University of Adelaide details her own intimate experience with the Giant Australian Cuttlefish over ten years of study, including detailing the disastrous known consequences cuttlefish, squid and other marine species can expect if the salinity of the environment around Point Lowly is increased, additional contaminants introduced via increased shipping, and even increased noise pollution underwater during facility construction and operation. A story about the salt workers of the Rann of Kutch, working under very difficult conditions in India's salt desert, in Gujarat state. The Little Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh located in the Western Indian State of Gujarat in India. Far from being known around the world, even most people in India are not aware of its existence. There are no roads in the Rann. To travel here, one has to make ones way through its gigantic mud flats. This salt-bearing wilderness spreads over 5,000 sq kms and is also known as 'Survey Number Zero' because no land survey has been conducted here since the end of British rule in India. Just 600 kms from Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, this land is unknown to most. With its unique geography of a vast desolate landscape, it makes for a very distinct forest without trees. Despite its bleak countryside it is an important ecological terrain for wildlife due to its rich biodiversity. Comprising of thousands of kilometers of barren land, the Little Rann provides a safe haven to a shocking number of local and migratory birds, the endangered wild ass who's only home now is the Little Rann, and other rare and beautiful creatures. The other living creatures found in this arid land are the Agariyas or the Salt Farmers. Surrounded by mounds of tones of white salt crystals, one can easily spot them in the middle of the Rann. In the monsoon, the Arabian Sea invades the Gulf of Kutch, blanketing the muddy flatland under knee--deep water for four months hence making it saline. Yes, you can use nasal drops in children. Don’t get scared about it. Only thing is what concentration you are using and which type you are using. Preferably saline. Any nasivion or saline nasal drops if it comes in the concentration of normal saline 0.65% ,that should be good. How you apply into the nose is very important. Don’t go straight and just put it into the nose. It trickles down into the posterior pharynx area and your child will start coughing. Always put the drops in the side and it trickles slowly down and clears your airways. One drop and two drop is more. Don’t go on doing it and especially if the nose is blocked and you want to feed the child, then child will not take the feed because the nose is blocked. Use a nasal drops one drop on each side. Leave it for a minute or two, it gets cleared and the nasal drops slowly trickles down. The nose gets cleared, and then you start feeding. Don’t use it frequently. As much as possible give feeds and keep the room warm. If you live in a cold area, then it may help you. If you feed your baby then it regurgitates, it’s not vomiting, it comes through the nose and the nose becomes very irritating and curd formation of the milk will be there. In this case also you can use nasal drops. As much as possible, stick to saline nasal drops. That will do.

To address degradation of the marine environment, it is important to also consider and incorporate the impacts of land-based activities along the coast and also further inland. Activities that occur many miles inland can have an effect not only in coastal areas, but also far out at sea. Examples of these impacts include salt water intrusion into historically freshwater areas, nutrient over-enrichment, and changes in sedimentation patterns. To preserve overall ecosystem integrity, it is imperative to link management measures regarding oceans and coasts to the management of river basins and watersheds. Discussions of freshwater management and oceans management, however, typically take place separately in different forums. It is important to address the challenge of linking freshwater to coasts and oceans from a new collaborative perspective that examines how decision-making and institutional development from both upstream and downstream management could be reconciled at international, regional, national and sub-national levels.

Japan is facing a serious labor shortage, a problem that can be traced back to an aging population and a prevailing fear that immigrants will dilute the country’s pure gene pool. In order to keep the world’s third-largest economy afloat, the Japanese government offers an internship program that attracts foreign workers from China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The program, which allows workers to stay for three years, is advertised as providing laborers with transferrable new skills for when they return home. VICE News recently traveled to Japan to investigate the internship program. We found that many interns are underpaid, saddled with insurmountable debt, and forced into a form of indentured servitude. Many are illegally placed as oyster shuckers, construction workers, and other unskilled positions. And, despite international condemnation, Japan plans to use thousands of new foreign interns to build the infrastructure for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
