Red, White, & Sacrebleu: How American wines shocked the world
From wine elves to classy pitchmen, American winemakers have tried just about everything to challenge the dominance of French vintners. And yet, with infamous labels like Ripple and Thunderbird, Yankee wines had long endured the reputation of being good for just one one thing—getting blitzed. So it must have seemed like a cruel joke in 1976 when a British wine merchant arranged The Paris Tasting, a one-of-its-kind competition that pitted mighty France versus lowly America in a blind taste test judged entirely by Gallic wine experts. But as viewers of the movie Bottle Shock and the documentary Mondovino can tell you, the unthinkable happened: America took home top honors for both red and white wine. The Paris Tasting made Mike Grgich an instant legend, but back then, even the maker of the winning white couldn't believe he had won. "I said are you sure it's me?" recalls Grgich. How could this American, an immigrant who fled communist Yugoslavia, shock the world? The French wanted to find out, so Jean-Noël Fourmeaux, an official government wine taster became a wine spy. He headed to California to discover how, in the span of a couple of decades, American winemakers progressed from Thunderbird to Grgich's award-winning white. Fourmeaux encountered a freewheeling atmosphere of technological and cultural innovation—one that attracted the likes of Squire Fridell of Glen Lyon Vineyards, a winemaker who has his own reason for smiling at America's emergence as a leader in wine. Fourmeaux pondered what he could create by mixing French tradition with Yankee innovation, and it led him to a most unexpected decision. "Red, White, and Sacrebleu" is written and produced by Ted Balaker, who also hosts. Director of Photography: Alex Manning; Field Producers: Paul Detrick and Hawk Jensen; Production Associates: Zach Weissmueller and Tannen Wels. SOUNDBITE (English) Andre Terrail, owner of La Tour d'Argent restaurant: "Now is the time we thought to sell just a small selection of the wine cellar because 18-thousand out of 450-thousand is just a very small portion. But it's a wonderful way to make it breathe, make some small adjustments here and there, and carry on buying wines for the next vintages." 8. Pan from bell ringing outside the wine cellar to chief sommelier David Ridgway arriving and saying (English) "Welcome to the Tour d'Argent cellars, please follow me" 9. Tracking shot of Ridgway walking through the wine cellar 10. Mid of Ridgway taking a bottle of wine from shelf 11. SOUNDBITE (English) David Ridgway, chief sommelier at La Tour d'Argent restaurant: "We have these wines we could keep for another 20, 30 years, but at the same time if we want to buy young vintages like the 2009s that have been produced which are a great vintage in France generally, if we want to buy that we're going to have to make space for them. So to make space for them, we have to sell more than we are selling actually. So ..." 12. Close of bottles in cellar 13. Mid of Andre Terrail entering the wine cellar and looking at bottles 14. SOUNDBITE (English) Andre Terrail, owner of La Tour d'Argent restaurant: "What is absolutely exceptional in the selection of wines that we are proposing is the fact that the wines have been perfectly kept during all those years. We always say that the wines have only made one trip from the wine makers to our wine cellars. Until then they have not moved." 16. Close of Clos du Griffier Cognac from 1788 17. Mid of the Clos du Griffier Cognac from 1788 18. SOUNDBITE (English) David Ridgway, chief sommelier at La Tour d'Argent restaurant: "We have a sentimental value because obviously they are the oldest bottles in the cellar, but maybe our sentiments are not reality so it will be interesting to see." 19. Mid of very old bottles on shelves 20. Set up of Alexis Velliet, auctioneer at Piasa auction house 21. SOUNDBITE (French) Alexis Velliet, auctioneer: "For a wine connoisseur, it's the top, the top choice, of conservation. It's obviously very rewarding to organise it and I hope that the connoisseurs will participate in the auction one way or another." 22. Mid of auction book STORYLINE The landmark La Tour d'Argent restaurant in Paris, which dates back to 1582, is cleaning out its 450-thousand-bottle wine cellar - considered one of the best and biggest in the world - and putting 18-thousand bottles up for auction on Monday, an event that has captured the imagination of French wine lovers. The restaurant is selling mostly wine but also some very old spirits, like three bottles of a Clos du Griffier Cognac from 1788, the year before the French Revolution, as well as the ancient Armagnac, valued at 400 - 500 euros (594 -742 US dollars) a bottle. The restaurant wants to cut down on wines it has in multiple to vary and modernise its selection. "You'll probably see, we've got too many bottles," jokes chief sommelier David Ridgway, unlocking a padlocked iron gate that ushers visitors into the restaurant's labyrinthine cellar, where bottles are stacked floor to ceiling in a succession of caverns. Ridgeway, a Briton, has overseen the wine list since the early 1980s. Wine, the strange power | Bruce Gutlove | TEDxSapporo
Wine is delicious. Through Mr. Bruce Gutlove’s speech, let us realize that wine has many features of not only drink but also its unexpected power. There are also many opportunities in our life which we have never imagined. By thinking what we can do for people around and taking actions, we can learn and enrich our life. Mr. Bruce Gutlove was born in New York in1961. While in State University of New York, he took a course on wines, then he got interested in wines and founded a wine club. He tasted a wide variety of wines, gradually deepening his interest. In 1985, he enrolled in the UC Davis, which had the most authoritative viticulture and enology department in the US. He started learning enology in earnest and determined to become a wine maker. After graduation, he worked at famous wineries in California, learning and training to make wines in practice. In 1989, he was called into the COCO FARM & WINERY in Ashikaga, Tochigi as a consultant, and he moved to Japan. COCO produced world-class wines 100% from grapes grown in Japan. While working for COCO FARM & WINERY, he increased desire to make own wines. In 2009, he established his winery, “10R” in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido. He has been making efforts to spread the wonder and delight in brewing wines and the tips to enjoy them throughout Japan. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Wine Of The Week II Jan 15th
Double Decker Wines, an adventurous offshoot of Wente Estate Wines offers us their Red Blend composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Barbera. All three grapes lend and blend. The Cab with it dark fruits and tannins, the Petit Sirah, tannins and plums and the Barbera balances all that out with deep color and mellowness gives us mouth filling flavors of blackberry, black cherry and plum in one glass or bottle as the case maybe. $25 a bottle and $8 by the glass is a great value. As the Double Decker conductor would say, “Hop on the Bus and have a glass with us!” Featuring Lance Guetschow II Created by Carly Schneider

Philippines Wine Tasting of Champagne/Sparkling held by Yats Wine Shop
Manila Wine Tasting of Five Styles of Champagne and Sparkling Wines, namely Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, Sekt and Loire Saumur held on 23rd September, 2010 Thursday 5:30 -- 10:30pm at Upper East Restaurant, Salcedo Village, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines. Admission ticket was purchased at p1,500 in advance. Inclusive of a wine-friendly buffet served by Upper East Restaurant http://www.YatsWineCellars.com To attend upcoming wine tasting events in Manila and other cities in Philippines held by Yats Wine Cellars, email: [email protected] or call (632) 637-5019 and ask for Rea or Chay. Format of YATS Wine Experience -- YWE - Session YATS Wine Cellars regularly hold non-commercial wine tasting to help wine enthusiasts expand their knowledge of wine in a most enjoyable and affordable way. These tastings are different from other commercial tastings. The wines from these tastings are not sponsored by a wine merchant and there are no salesmen. You are in the company of people from all ages and all walks with one common interest -- wine. Tickets can be purchased in advance at a discount. Each ticket comes with five tasting stubs. The wines are lined up at a wine service station. Present a ticket at this station to surrender the stubs to redeem a tasting pours (roughly 55-60ml per pour) of five wines on the line-up. Someone will always be available to answer questions or discuss topics pertinent to the theme of the wines in the event. Otherwise the event is a self-paced tasting exercise that is the most structured and economical way to sample interesting wines. Wines of this YWE session For this event, we re-visit some interesting and some up-and-coming wine regions in France. Fine vintage wines are being discovered much to the (pleasant) surprise of the more adventurous wine enthusiasts who took the trouble to seek out new and exciting wine regions within the geographical areas commonly referred to as "the old world". For this particular Yats Wine Experience session held in Makati, Manila, Philippines, we visited these wine regions: • Champagne -- A great deal has been said and written about Champagne which is the most successful example of market branding in wine. Exclusivity of the brand name Champagne is as heavily defended as that of Coke and Pepsi. Is Champagne all about brand or is it really distinct from the rest of the field. The answer is clearly "yes" as this comparative tasting will surely show. Champagne is an impossible combination of complexity with a sense of levity. It is our choice on how seriously we want to approach it. But let's not be distracted by the bubbles. There is some seriously attractive (white) wine behind the fizz. • Italy -- Italy's top-of-the-line sparkling wines are called Prosecco which confusingly as usual, also happens the name of the grape that is used in the sparkling wine. Prosecco is made in Veneto. Many of us have tasted it in the famous cocktail drink called Bellini. Prosecco sparkling wine is generally dry but a bit more fruity than French Champagne, making it a friendlier entry point to the world of sparkling wines. • Germany -- Sparkling wines in Germany are called Sekt which comes in many styles from dry to something sweeter called "doux". This MUMM Elegant Extra Trocken Sekt is a classic-styled sparkling wine, dry and vigorous, a worthy example of German Sekt. Consistent with German tastes for lighter wines, alcohol levels of most Sekt's are a bit lower than other sparkling wine. This MUMM weighs in at a modest 11.5%, about 0.5% lower than most champagne for example. • Spain -- Long been dubbed, a bit unfairly perhaps, the poor man's Champagne, Spanish sparkling wine called Cava has risen from mediocrity into a venerable sparkling wine. One of the most significant breakthroughs is the switch over to the French Champagne production method which is referred to in Span as "Method Tradicional", a most costly process but one that adds so much more complexity to the wine. • France Loire Saumur - Saumur Rosé Sec from the Loire Valley is famous for its full-bodied Rosé but also makes very attractive sparkling wine like this Sparkling Rosé that is aromatic, fruity and quite full and powerful, an excellent food wine, a great choice of sparkling for brunch also. About the Venue We are delighted to hold this session of YATS Wine Experience in the charming Upper East Restaurant which is a part of the AHA culinary school. F&B Director Sharlene Golding will be organizing the food for this event. Address: Ground Floor, NDC Building 116 Tordesillas Street Salcedo Village, Makati City
