This event focused on researchers who employ data mining techniques in their work. In this thematic context we aim to better understand the cross-disciplinary practice of data mining and its associated implications, such as privacy issues, ethics and the interplay with open data. PhD students as well as early career and experienced researchers from around the UK came together to explore how they manage data that they have created when undertaking mining projects, and a panel session helped to identify key questions that researchers face when encountering these implications. Facility location problems arise in a wide range of applications such as plant or warehouse location problems and network design problems, and have been widely studied in Computer Science and Operations Research literature. These problems typically involve an underlying set F of facilities that provide service, and an underlying set D of clients that require service, which need to be assigned to facilities in a cost-effective fashion. This abstraction is quite versatile and also captures clustering problems, where one typically seeks to partition a set of data points into k clusters, for some given k, in a suitable way, which themselves find applications in data mining, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Basic variants of facility location problems are now relatively well-understood, but we have a much-less understanding of more-sophisticated models that better model the real-world concerns. In this talk, I will present my work on some of these models inspired by some real-world optimization scenarios and give an overview of techniques that have been successfully improved the state-of-the-art approximation algorithm for these models. I will discuss some future directions and open problems as well. See more at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/video/clustering-and-facility-location-problems/

A data analyst's job is to take that data and analyse it to help companies make better business decisions. Some examples of a data analyst basic job functions include: 1) estimating market shares; 2) establishing a price of new materials for the market; 3) reducing transportation costs; 4) timing of sales and 5) figuring out when to hire or reduce the workforce.Data analysts are responsible for collecting, manipulating, and analyzing data. How To Get There? By obtaining a university degree, learning important analytical skills, and gaining valuable work experience, you can become a successful data analyst. A bachelor's degree is needed for most entry-level jobs, and a master's degree will be needed for many upper-level jobs. To become an initial level data analyst, you’ll have to earn a degree in a subject such as mathematics, statistics, economics, marketing, finance, or computer science. Higher level data analyst jobs may require a master’s or doctoral degree, and they usually guarantee higher pay. Individuals looking for data analyst jobs must be knowledgeable in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, SharePoint, and SQL databases. Data analysts also must have good communication skills, as they must have an open line of communication with the companies with which they work. Many tasks in computer security revolve around the manual analysis of data, such as the inspection of log files or network traffic. Data mining and machine learning can help to accelerate these tasks and provides versatile tools for detecting and analyzing security data. The sesions deals with the combination of machine learning and computer security. After a short introduction to the basics of machine learning, we present common learning concepts and discuss how they are applied to security problems, such as intrusion detection, malware analysis or vulnerability discovery. I am a Professor of Computer Science at Technische Universität Braunschweig. I am leading the Institute of System Security. Prior to taking this position, I have been working at the University of Göttingen, Technische Universität Berlin and Fraunhofer Institute FIRST. My research interests revolve around computer security and machine learning. This includes the detection of computer attacks, the analysis of malicious software, and the discovery of vulnerabilities. I am also interested in efficient algorithms for analyzing structured data, such as sequences, trees and graphs. My Erdős number is 3 (Müller → Jagota → Erdős). My Bacon number is ∞, though.

Authors: Joel Dudley, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Ping Zhang, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center Fei Wang, Department of Healthcare Policy and Research, Cornell University Abstract: In the last decade, advances in high-throughput technologies, growth of clinical data warehouses, and rapid accumulation of biomedical knowledge provided unprecedented opportunities and challenges to researchers in biomedical informatics. One distinct solution, to efficiently conduct big data analytics for biomedical problems, is the application of matrix computation and factorization methods such as non-negative matrix factorization, joint matrix factorization, tensor factorization. Compared to probabilistic and information theoretic approaches, matrix-based methods are fast, easy to understand and implement. In this tutorial, we provide a review of recent advances in algorithms and methods using matrix and their potential applications in biomedical informatics. We survey various related articles from data mining venues as well as from biomedical informatics venues to share with the audience key problems and trends in matrix computation research, with different novel applications such as drug repositioning, personalized medicine, and electronic phenotyping.
