OPEN PIT MINING OF COPPER IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST 1960s MOVIE 57284

37:52
Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. At 16:00, a small 4.5 yard bucket shovel is shown being used to move blast debris. At 16:00, a 6-yard loading shovel is seen. At 17:49, overburden waste from the pit is loaded on a train so that it can be moved and dumped at a remote area. At 18:50, a 13-yard shovel is seen in use with a large truck also in use. As the narrator explains, these large size equipment is needed to lower unit costs of copper, and are an economic necessity given the modern financial conditions. At 19:52, the motorized wheel principle of new types of mining trucks is seen, and the narrator comments that next generation trucks will carry over 100 tons of ore. At 22:55, a grader is seen working the mine roads, and the narrator comments about how tires wear out so quickly on the job that they account for up to 1% of mining costs. At 24:30, railroad trains are shown on the move at a mine, moving 60-125 ton per car loads. The narrator comments further on the use of railroads in pit mining. At 26:30, a large shovel is seen loading a train, sprinkling the loads with water to hold down dust. The large boulders in the loads make this type of work dangerous. At 27:16, ore loads are dumped into a crusher at a mill site. At 27:40, a rail waste dump into a slag pile is seen. At 28:00, a train-based grader is used to clear tracks of debris. The narrator notes that the mining railroads are some of the busiest in the USA and the world. At 28:44, new tracks are installed due to various demands, and mechanized railroad ballast systems are used for fast track installation. At 31:20, a skip hoist is seen being used to take ore from a deep, small pit to the surface. At 32:50, a series of leeching ponds is seen, with water percolated through the ponds to precipitate copper. At 34:00, a machine shop is seen at the mine, providing repair and maintenance services at the mine. At 35:40, a heavy repair part is unloaded at the mine using a power shovel. At 36:00, a research laboratory is seen at work, developing new uses of copper in the atomic and other industries. At 36:40, the IBM Ramac computer is seen. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first commercial computer that used a moving-head hard disk drive (magnetic disk storage) for secondary storage. The film ends with a shot of a heap of pennies, with the narrator noting that the industry is working hard to expand production to fulfill future needs. The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, is extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world and produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 19 million tons. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (970 m) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). Marion Power Shovel Company was an American firm that designed, manufactured and sold steam shovels, power shovels, blast hole drills, excavators, and dragline excavators. The company was a major supplier of shovels for the construction of the Panama Canal. Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power. Steve St Angelo: Gold & Silver Miners Running Out of Ways to Cut Costs

01:04:53
Jason Burack of Wall st for Main St had on gold and silver mining and oil and energy expert, Steve St. Angelo of the SRSRocco Report http://srsroccoreport.com/ on for an in depth interview. During this 50+ minute interview, Jason asks Steve about the costs to operate a modern primary gold and primary silver miner. Jason and Steve discuss how since ore grades have fallen so much over the decades how they have made it difficult for miners for have high margins. Jason asks Steve how miners have survived in the past when gold and silver were below their all in production costs in the mid 90s. Steve cites one miner, Coeur D'Alene Mining, who sold hundreds of millions more shares diluting shareholders to survive. Jason and Steve discuss whether miners can sell many more shares in this environment. Jason doesn't think that's likely considering what he hears from his contacts in Toronto and Vancouver where miners normally get financed how there's basically no debt or equity available anymore, except in small amounts at penalty/punitive rates. Jason asks Steve about primary copper miners and what will happen to the gold and silver by-product when the hedges of copper miners come off line and copper miners go bankrupt or shut down mines. Steve thinks this could cause a supply squeeze in the near future unless gold and silver prices rise. Jason and Steve talk about the fundamentals of the market how demand for physical is rising, while the paper price is controlled and how miners are struggling mightily financially just to not go bankrupt soon. To wrap up the interview, Jason and Steve discuss the oil and energy markets, peak oil and how the fracking boom is about to turn into a fracking bust because US shale oil companies are not making a profit without their hedges, they have too much debt and the energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) in shale oil is poor compared to other oil production. Steve and Jason also talk about solar power and how it's probably not a panacea to replace oil and natural gas, at least not until the battery problem is solved. Most rare earths mining is done in China to produce solar panels, making them not as environmentally friendly as people think and silver industrial demand should grow the more solar panels are used. PolarX’s high-grade copper-gold results in Alaska indicate potential for open pit mining

05:41
PolarX Ltd (ASX:PXX) managing director Frazer Tabeart updates Proactive Investors on recent high-grade copper and gold assay results from its Alaska Range Project in the USA. The results indicate the potential for flat-lying and thick near-surface mineralisation, suitable for low-cost open pit extraction, and extend the sub-horizontal mineralisation encountered in previous drilling. “We’ve got 40-50 metres thickness of high-grade mineralisation, almost from surface, and that mineralisation is a little bit of different from what we’ve seen before inasmuch as it’s flat-lying and very thick,” Tabeart says. He continues, “if we can drill that out over some area we can have a fairly large open-pittable resource, as opposed to an underground mining proposition for the remainder of the resource.”

Global commodity prices have fallen over the past few months. The price of copper has taken a hit because of a slump in demand from China. China consumes 50% of the world's supply of the metal, and that has had a ripple effect in countries like Zambia, which is Africa's second biggest producer. Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller explains.

The Real Cost of Open Cast Mining in South Wales

03:57
Proposals for an open cast mine at Nant Llesg, Rhymney will soon be submitted by Scottish developer Miller Argent. This will be a huge surface mine that would remain in operation for 17 years and excavate around 6m tonnes of coal from an area of around 3,000 acres - its eastern edge being just 500m from the town of Rhymney. Green Valleys Alliance is a consortium of local businesses with backing from the local community that launched its opposition to the proposals in July. The Alliance is concerned that the mine will have a negative impact on local jobs and investment in the area, be detrimental to the environment and people's quality of life and could make the local population vulnerable to long term health risks. Local businessman Mitchell Field, who employs 140 people at Rhymney-based cosmetics business Richards & Appleby Ltd and features in the video, said: "We have decided to release this video to highlight the negative impact that these proposals will have on the local area and show people exactly why our group is opposed to the creation of this mine." "The video shows the areas that will be affected - lush green fields and farm land that will be completely destroyed - and highlights our concerns about the real risk of job losses and economic decline in the area if this mine goes ahead." There was a fair amount of research that went into gathering all the costs and dimensions needed to give potential miners an idea of the financial implications of running an open-pit operation. One of the more unique features of this financial model is the ability of the user to enter the % of a given ore they expect to have in each tonne of actual ore produced. This ranges from gold and silver to gravel and clay.

ASARCO Ray Mine in Kearny, Arizona

05:06
ASARCO’s Ray Mine operation is a 250,000-ton-per-day copper ore open pit mine that produces approximately 100 million pounds of copper each year. ASARCO (American Smelting and Refinery Company) was established in 1899 primarily as a lead and silver smelting and refining company. Today, it is primarily a copper mining, smelting and refining company, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grupo Mexico. As general manager of the Ray operation, Mike Kotraba is always seeking new ways to keep costs low and improve production throughput. Most recently, the question that plagued him concerned the low-quality copper material that had to be recirculated through the primary SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill. What would be the net impact on SAG throughput if the operation could remove the recirculating load from the mill, he wondered. In less than a month, ASARCO Ray Mine had its answer. Thanks to the use of a KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens SuperStacker, the mine saw increased mill throughput and reduced costs. In the first three months of use, ASARCO has removed approximately 500,000 tons of reject material from the SAG mill circuit, saving the company between $750,000 and $1,000,000. These savings come from: 1) reduced costs (by not crushing and recycling the sub-grade recirculating load); 2) increased SAG throughput (by rejecting the sub-grade recirculating load thereby opening-up additional SAG volume for more fresh feed), and 3) increased copper production (by adding higher grade, fresh feed to the process).

Searchlight: Rich Deposits of Gold and Silver - Mining Boom - Mojave Desert in Nevada (1998)

01:01:25
Searchlight is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated town in Clark County, Nevada, United States, at the topographic saddle between two mountain ranges. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 539. According to Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who has written extensively about his hometown, the most likely story as to how the town received its name was that when George Frederick Colton was looking for gold in the area in 1897, he supposedly said that it would take a searchlight to find gold ore there. Shortly thereafter he found gold, leading to a boom era when Searchlight had a larger population than Las Vegas. At the time, it was in Lincoln County, Nevada. As talk surfaced for carving Clark County, Nevada out of Lincoln County, Searchlight was initially considered to be the county seat. Between 1907 and 1910 the gold mines produced $7 million in gold and other precious minerals, and the town had a population of about 1,500. Other stories on the origin of the name include a story that Colton was lighting a Searchlight brand match when he discovered the gold ore. Reid dismisses this story, saying that the Searchlight matches were not available in 1898. Yet another story says that Colton thought the area would be a good place because it was on a hill. Colton's mine was called the Duplex, because the gold ore was found on two levels.[2][3] Searchlight declined after 1917 but hung on as a stop on the Arrowhead Highway. In 1927, U.S. Highway 91 bypassed the town, and its population dropped to 50. The town had a resurgence in the 1930s and 1940s with the construction of nearby Hoover Dam and was home to the El Rey Bordello in the 1940s and early 1950s until it burned. The last gold mine ceased operating around 1953. Searchlight experiences a desert climate with hot summers and cool winters. Searchlight's elevation makes temperatures somewhat cooler than lower-elevation areas in the Mojave Desert, such as Baker, California, and Needles, California, and Fort Mohave, Arizona. However, summers can still be extremely hot. Due to Searchlight's altitude and aridity, temperatures drop quickly after sunset, especially in the summer. Winters are mild. Daytime highs in the winter are usually well above freezing, and nighttime lows drop below freezing only a few nights a year. Notable residents: Rex Bell, westerns actor and politician. Owned the Walking Box Ranch with his wife Clara Bow. The ranch was a popular destination for Hollywood actors. Edith Head, costume designer who won more Oscars than any other woman[7] William Harrell Nellis, aviator for whom Nellis Air Force Base is named[8] Harry Reid, U.S. Senate Minority Leader In 1907, the "Searchlight Rag" by Scott Joplin was published. In the early 1890s, Joplin's friends, the brothers Tom and Charles Turpin, had done prospecting in the Searchlight area. The brothers' frequent stories of this experience, recounted to the patrons of their bar, inspired the title of the rag. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Searchlight,_Nevada Image By Andrzej Barabasz (Chepry) (Own work) [CC BY-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Let's Blast!

05:00
NOTE: Although this video shows an up-close look at the blasting process, NEVER go near an active surface mine or blast site without Federal training and permission. FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. After all the holes are loaded and rigged up, it's time for the fireworks! And remember kids, don't try this at home! Want to see more Blasting? Highest Grade Undeveloped Open Pits in the World- Sabina Gold and Silver Corp.

01:39
President and CEO of Sabina Gold and Silver Corp., Bruce McLeod talks about the company’s project in a prolific gold belt. "We're a gold development exploration Company. Today our resource is 5.2 million ounces measured and indicated at over 6 grams gold. An additional 2 million ounces in inferred. We're located in the territory of Nunavut Canada; it is a prolific gold belt. We have put a feasibility study out on the Back River gold belt. The challenge has always been the infrastructure of getting equipment and getting people in and out, and that's why we've been focusing so much on this infrastructure improvement program. We have relied almost exclusively on air support for the project. Our first sealift will be upcoming next month, where we’ll be able to bring all our product to the project via Winter Road. Sabina’s ’ competitive advantage is size, we're over 7 million ounces in all categories. It's grade, these are the highest grade undeveloped open pits in the world, over half a million ounces. And our team, we've got a team that this isn't the first time that they've built and executed in challenging and remote locations. You know, we work in an excellent jurisdiction in Nunavut. In long-established mining history, it's a long permitting timeline but we've successfully navigated our way through that. This is a hundred per cent owned by Sabina, so it truly is a unique opportunity and a unique asset class in a fantastic jurisdiction." - Bruce McLeod, President & CEO of Sabina Gold and Silver To see more videos like this one go to www.b-tv.com.
Mining for Gold and Silver on Tribe's Ancestral Land

03:41
In recent years, increasing demand for mineral resources has pushed mining companies to go farther and deeper in search of new deposits. Among these new frontiers is the homeland of the Subanens - a semi-nomadic tribe in the southern Philippines - where a foreign company is mining what the tribe considers a sacred mountain. Heda Bayron visited the tribe's home in the village of Canatuan and reports on a community trying to safeguard its traditions as the global commodities trade encroaches.

Comstock Mining (LODE): Close to Producing Gold and Silver In Nevada

07:24
http://goldstocktrades.com The Comstock Lode produced over 200 million ounces of silver. Comstock Mining (LODE) consolidated the historic Comstock Lode District over the past few years. The company targeted a rich, near surface, higher grade resource of gold and silver and was able to validate well over 2.5 million ounces of gold and more than 20 million ounces of silver. The Lucerne area now has a fully functioning processing facility and is scheduled to produce gold and silver by the end of September 2012. The Lucerne Area is only one out of seven major target areas. The company has been very successful at expanding and adding ounces at very low exploration costs. Costs of finding gold and silver worldwide have increased, however Comstock has been able to add gold resources extremely economically. Comstock operates is Nevada which is one of the top places to mine precious metals from a permitting and cost basis. The company is on the verge of production and generating cash flow which will attract attention from large institutions.

Cyprium Mining (CUG.V): Looking To Become Near Term Copper Producer

11:10
http://goldstocktrades.com Cyprium owns the past producing Las Cristinas Copper and Silver property located in northeastern Mexico and a processing facility. The CEO who resides in Mexico has a previous track record of bringing mines into production. He has chosen this asset as it can possibly reach production in the short term and then sustain the exploration growth with revenue from production rather than just going back to the market to finance drilling through equity. Cyprium is run by Andre St. Michel who has spent the last ten years working and living in Mexico. He previously started a copper-zinc mine where he was responsible for the operation of a mine with annual revenues of $27 million. Management has outlined to me some short term milestones which include results from drilling of around 4,000 meters. Cyprium should also obtain a permit for a 200 tons per day flotation plant at their processing facility. The company is hoping to start mining by the end of this year. Copper was produced from the asset in the early 1970's. Recent sampling results showed a high of close 18% copper and 429 g/t silver. There were some samples that showed high grades near the surface. Cyprium plans to produce an NI 43-101 resource by the end of 2014. The big question is how can they get to production quickly if they are just beginning drilling. This is where the management's experience in production come in handy. The visual evidence of the mineralization appears to be at surface so this means possibly lower capital expenditures and cheaper mining costs. There are old workings with easy underground access. The share structure is tight with only 41.5 million shares outstanding. Over 36% of the shares are held in strong hands by management and institutions. A break above the closing high at $.21 on good drilling news could be significant. Expect volume to possibly increase as more investors become aware of this company. Disclosure: I own Cyprium and they are a website sponsor. Please do your own due diligence.

SILVER, COPPER MINING COULD SAVE HAITI

02:08
Haiti's copper and silver reserves in its hills are now up for an extensive exploitation by a Canadian corporation that has reportedly damaged the neighboring Dominican Republic. Once this mining plan is authorized while Haiti is under foreign occupation, it could practically leave the country without its ecological, cultural and mineral wealth. Moreover, concerns surrounding the mining venture have been raised as the operation calls for the construction of a deep-water port in the northeastern part of the country, posing a significant threat to their marine ecosystem. The biggest water reservoir that is near the mining operations is at constant risk of cyanide contamination, adding to the reports that the firm has been previously accused of destroying Indian archeological sites by using dynamites on mountain sand. Geologists of the United Nations have documented significant pockets of copper and gold in 1970s but at that time, foreigners were not willing to risk their money in an unstable and corrupt country. Surprisingly, it was not after the 2010 earthquake that outside investment was encouraged and investors discovered a good opportunity. In fact, just 2 weeks after the  catastrophe, a Canadian exploration company purchased all the stocks of the only Haitian company which has full permits in exchange for an area of land, practically appearing as a scam. Three companies are already considering prospects of mining in Haiti but at present, only Somine has complete concessions to bring the metals out of the area. The said permits for 31 square miles were negotiated in 1996 during the presidency of Rene Preval and which required the company to hire Haitians. According to the parties interested in the mining prospects: "What we're most excited about is that we found some silver which was never really realized before. It's the first silver discovery in Haiti. Part of the reason why it was never really discovered was that historically there was so much copper prevalent — there's a lot of outcropping at surface. The people who did the work before did not do much testing, even for gold. The geology is a little complex for a copper porphyry, but in a good way. The surprises that we're getting are all good ones." At the end of the day, if Haiti could have a good administration and honest mining companies, it is still possible for it to move forward, said Black Hawk Mining Bulletin Articles

Memories of Red: Gold Mining in Romania's Rosia Montana

Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/romania-hungary-mining-toxic-waste-rosia-montana-gold Pulitzer Center grantees Dimiter Kenarov and Nadia Shira Cohen traveled to the Rosia Montana region of Romania, where plans are underway to open the biggest open-pit gold and silver mine in Europe. One of the oldest mining sites in the world, Rosia Montana village offers archeologists and historians valuable insights into its 2,000-year mining tradition. Should the mining plans be approved, the surrounding mountains and nearby valley will be transformed into four gigantic mining pits and a dam holding cyanide-laced tailings, which could lead to a bigger environmental liability than the toxic sludge in Hungary in case of design failure. The mining debate has polarized Rosia Montana that no compromise seems possible in the near future. Dimiter Kenarov and Nadia Shira Cohen wade through the hidden toxic waste in European Union's newer member states, where EU's high environmental standards are still very difficult to enforce. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Toxic Europe" (http://bit.ly/zHMUdw).

Click for FREE XRC package: http://bit.ly/jquVZF Al Korelin chats with Yale Simpson, Chairman of Exeter Resource Corp. and Co-Chairman of Extorre Gold Mines about how Extorre is moving forward with building its high grade mine in Argentina. They also discuss Extorre Exeter Resource Corporation is a Canadian public company listed on the TSX and NYSE Amex exchanges. Our focus is the discovery, evaluation and development of gold deposits in the Maricunga district in Chile. Exeter's 100% owned Caspiche Project in Chile (with a 3% Net Smelter Royalty to Anglo American Chile Limitada) is a gold-copper porphyry system, a type of deposit common to many of the world's largest open pit gold-copper mines. It is located 15 kilometres (8 miles) south of Kinross Gold's Refugio mine (+6 million ounce gold resource), and 10 kilometres (6 miles) north of the very large Cerro Casale gold-copper deposit (24 million ounce gold resource), owned by Kinross Gold (25%)and Barrick Gold (75%). A new Geological Resource for the Caspiche Project was completed by AMEC in August 2011, which served to upgrade the classification of some material previously considered inferred to higher categories. The new resource contains 1.36 billion tonnes in the measured and indicated categories containing 22 million ounces of gold, 6093 million pounds copper and 49 million ounces of silver. A further 286 million tonnes is in the inferred category containing 2.85 million ounces of gold, 1281 million pounds copper and 8.18 million ounces silver. The resource is inclusive of the project mineral reserves. Extorre released the results of an updated preliminary economic assessment ("PEA") of the Cerro Moro Project on April 2nd, 2012. The PEA highlighted the robust economics of a future mine expected to produce an average of 248,000 gold equivalent* ounces (123,125 oz. gold + of 6.25 Moz. silver) annually during the first 5 years of operations. The cash cost per ounce is estimated to be US$303 per ounce gold equivalent*. Initial CAPEX (Direct Costs) $US 207.3M + $US 39.6M VAT (VAT recoverable), Initial Indirect Costs (EPCM, owners' costs, commissioning) $US 37.2M. The project economics were calculated using gold and silver prices of US$1320/ounce and US$26/ounce, respectively.
