DATA & ANALYTICS: Analyzing 25 billion stock market events in an hour with NoOps on GCP
Recorded on Mar 23 2016 at GCP NEXT 2016 in San Francisco. Watch how FIS & Google are working to build a next-generation stock market reconstruction system that aims to bring transparency to the US financial markets and drive innovation across financial services. In this video we dive into the proposed system architecture and show how products like Cloud Bigtable, Cloud Dataflow and BigQuery enable this process. As part of the exercise, we ran a load test to process, validate, and link 25 billion US equities and options market events in 50 minutes, generating some impressive statistics in the process. Speakers: Neil Palmer and Todd Ricker from FIS and Carter Page from Google.

User Modeling in Telecommunications and Internet Industry
Author: Qiang Yang Abstract: It is extremely important in many application domains to have accurate models of user behavior. Data mining allows user models to be constructed based on vast available data automatically. User modeling has found applications in mobile APP recommendations, social networking, financial product marketing and customer service in telecommunications. Successful user modeling should be aware of several critical issues: who are the target users' How should the solutions be updated when new data come in? How should user feedback be handled? What are the ""pain"" points of users' In this talk, I will discuss my own experience on user modeling with big data. I will draw examples from telecommunications and the Internet industry, contrasting and highlighting some lessons learned in these industries. The Economist and Big Data
In this episode of BITV, correspondent Kenneth Cukier of The Economist shares his take on the changing amount of data and its effect on the world, both in the analytics space as well as on consumers. From the strain of information scarcity, our society has now evolved into the problem of too much data. Using analytics will help you with smarter data, rather than data overload. Watch now!

Analysis Services - 04 Cube Creation
So we have created our logical view of our data it's now time to create our cube...or is it? Can I create a Cube So Soon? The Microsoft textbook response is you can tackle Cube creation head on once you have established your Data Source and Data Source View. Yet there is something quite vital we are missing from our current developments which are dimensions. Dimensions (which we will get to shortly via several videos) are the text-based values you are going to want to place next to your Cube aggregations. E.g. If you have total sales in your Cube you probably will want to present that with perhaps a region or customer? Well the Cube Wizard handles creating these dimensions for you. Albeit not to the degree you will wish. You will soon find that the wizard is a good starting point but will lack the finesse you will be needing to apply to make a fully functional cube. But for the newbie coming to SSAS for the first time this is quite a sense of achievement and rightly so, you have traversed OLTP to OLAP using ETL in SSIS to reach SSAS. Boy I have just reliased how much I.T. relies on acronyms :)

Lessons in Analytics Strategy: Takeaways from the Sports Data Revolution with Ben Shields
The sports industry has been a pioneer in the data revolution, and there is much that we can learn about analytics management from studying it. Although decision making in sports is different from that of other industries, the similarities can reveal how analytics, if effectively deployed, can lead to better decisions and more successful organizations. Economic Calendar Of The Week - March 7-11, 2016
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy economic calendar of the week. Each week our news analysts review the upcoming economic events that you should be monitoring. The US jobs report ended what was a relatively unexciting week for markets. We have seen a move upwards for FX pairs like GBP/USD and EUR/USD, partly on dollar weakness, but the European Central Bank meeting this week will provide the key point for which investors were waiting. The focus will turn back towards the Eurozone as the European Central Bank's governing council meets on Thursday to decide on policy, with analysts increasingly expecting further stimulus measures. That will come amid heightened debate over the potential for banks and lending to the economy to be impacted by negative interest rates, although in a deflationary environment zero or positive interest rates mean 'real' or inflation adjusted rates in fact rise when the price level falls. Key to the ECB's decision-making, perhaps, will be its judgement on how long-lasting the current downdraft in oil prices might prove. Was the collapse in oil futures merely the result of Saudi merely accelerating the medium-term decline which was in store, courtesy of the US shale oil revolution - speak of disruptive technologies - or was it something altogether more transitory. Over the weekend, China's National People's Congress met, with analysts likely to keep close tabs on the magnitude of any fiscal policy stimulus which Beijing might unveil. China's new Five-Year plan should also include details of officials' infrastructure investment plans. The week kicks off on Monday in the US with the employment trends report and consumer credit data. Analysts expect consumer credit to have lifted by around $19 billion. Federal Reserve vice-chair Stanley Fischer also delivers a speech — the last major speech by a Fed member ahead of the March 15-16 rates decision. On Tuesday, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) issues its small business optimism index while the usual weekly data on chain store sales is released. In China, trade data is issued on Tuesday. While both exports and imports are down on a year ago, most focus is on imports as a measure of domestic spending. The trade surplus is at record highs. On Thursday in the US the monthly budget data and the usual weekly data on claims for unemployment insurance are issued. In China, the focus is on the February data on consumer and producer prices. Producer prices are still in decline, down 5.3 per cent over the year. And consumer prices are rising at a modest 1.8 per cent annual rate. Further tame inflation readings would leave the door open to more stimulatory measures. On Saturday the monthly batch of Chinese economic indicators are released — retail sales, production and investment. Chinese economic activity is decidedly mixed. Production and investment growth are slowing while retail sales growth is firm. Expect annual retail sales growth near 10.7 per cent, with production near 6 per cent and investment near 8.5 per cent. The risk is that the results print on the weaker side of expectations over the next couple of months — especially given that a lot of business would have closed for Chinese New Year celebrations earlier in the month. Indices continued their grind higher, with March starting in a relatively bullish fashion. If Mario Draghi delivers then we could see these gains accelerate, with the rallies that started as ‘short covering’ maturing into something more sustained as equity fund flows start to turn around. Seeking Alpha in Alternative Data
(Re-upload) In the JP Morgan May 2017 report titled “Big Data and AI Strategies: Machine Learning and Alternative Data Approach to Investing” authored by Marko Kolanovic and Rajesh T. Krishnamachari, a report was cited which states 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the past two years alone, and just 0.5% of the data produced is currently being analyzed in any form. The challenge for a quant is how to make sense and ultimately extract useful trading signals out of these data. In this webinar, Anthony Ng uses Quantopian's alternative datasets and demonstrate one way to extract signal out of these alternative datasets. Creating Olap Cube SQL server BI
Pentaho is a powerful Business Intelligence Suite offering many features: reporting, OLAP pivot tables, dashboarding and more. Report Designer: An advanced report creation tool. If you want to build a complex data-driven report, this is the right tool to use. Report Designer offers far more flexibility and functionality than the ad hoc reporting capabilities of the Pentaho User Console. • Design Studio: An Eclipse-based tool that enables you to hand-edit a report or analysis view xaction file. Generally, people use Design Studio to add modifications to an existing report that cannot be added with Report Designer. • Aggregation Designer: A graphical tool that helps improve Mondrian cube efficiency. • Metadata Editor: Enables you to add a custom metadata layer to an existing data source. Usually you would do this for a data source that you intend to use for reporting; it's not required, but it makes it easier for business users to parse the database when building a query. • Pentaho Data Integration: The Kettle extract, transform, and load (ETL) tool, which enables you to access and prepare data sources for analysis, data mining, or reporting. This is generally where you will start if you want to prepare data for analysis. • Schema Workbench: A graphical tool that helps you create ROLAP schemas for analysis. This is a required step in preparing data for analysis.

Kate Hennessy - Repatriation, Digital Media, and Culture in the Virtual Museum
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS). Many Canadian First Nations and Aboriginal organizations are using digital media to revitalize their languages and assert control over the representation of their cultures. At the same time, museums, academic institutions, and individuals are digitizing their ethnographic collections to make them accessible to originating communities. In this presentation I will explore how the term "virtual repatriation" is being applied to the digitization and return of heritage to Aboriginal communities, and draw attention to the opportunities, challenges, and critiques associated with digitization, circulation, and remix of Aboriginal cultural heritage. I will discuss recent projects including the collaborative production of a Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit with the Doig River First Nation, a Dane-zaa community in northeastern British Columbia, and a current collaborative production of a virtual exhibit with members of the Inuvialuit community in the western Arctic and curators at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. I will show that while access to cultural heritage in digital collections can facilitate the articulation of intellectual property rights to digital cultural heritage----including the right to restrict circulation----it also amplifies the difficulty of enforcing those rights. Kate Hennessy is an Assistant Professor specializing in Media at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT). She has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia and an MA in the Anthropology of Media from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. As the director of the Making Culture Lab at SIAT, her research explores the role of digital technology in the documentation and safeguarding of cultural heritage, and in the mediation of culture, history, objects, and subjects in new forms. Her video and multimedia works investigate documentary methodologies to address Indigenous and settler histories of place and space. She is a founding member of the Ethnographic Terminalia Curatorial Collective, an international group exploring the borders of anthropological, curatorial, and artistic practice (http://ethnographicterminalia.org). As assistant editor of the journal Visual Anthropology Review, she designed its first multimedia volume. Her work has been published in journals such as American Indian Quarterly, Museum Anthropology Review, and Visual Anthropology Review. She was a Trudeau Foundation Scholar from 2006-2010, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholar from 2005-2009, a Canadian Polar Commission Scholar in 2006-2007, and a Commonwealth Scholar in 2001-2002.

Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees today. The hearing will focus on the use of and protection of Facebook user data. Follow CBS News live blog here: https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/watch-mark-zuckerberg-testimony-senate-judiciary-commerce-committee-facebook-data-breach-today-live/ The public grilling, coming in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, could be a turning point for the social media behemoth and its young founder, which has largely avoided government regulation in its 15-year existence. On Monday, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce posted Zuckerberg's prepared testimony, in which the 33-year-old billionaire said his company needed to do more to protect the privacy of its users. "We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility and that was a big mistake," Zuckerberg said in the testimony. "It was my mistake, and I'm sorry. I started Facebook. I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here." Prognozy szeregów czasowych w hurtowni danych SQL Server Analysis Services 2012
Pierwsze podejście naiwnie prognozuje całkowity poziom sprzedaży dla całego przedsiębiorstwa (predykcja dla miar 'ilość' i 'kwota'). W momencie tworzenia Mining structure możemy dodatkowo ustalić dowolne filtry, ograniczając się do konkretnego wymiaru (wybranego produktu, itd.). Drugie podejście dokonuje indywidualnego prognozowania dla każdego z produktów. Kwerenda SQL użyta w drugim podejściu (edycja Data Source View) wykorzystana w celu ograniczenia przetwarzanego zbioru do samych produktów, niezależnie pozostałych wymiarów (lokalizacja, typ klienta, itd.) została podana poniżej: SELECT CAST(CAST(Czas.rok AS VARCHAR(4)) + RIGHT('00' + CAST(Czas.miesiąc AS VARCHAR(2)), 2) + RIGHT('00' + CAST(Czas.dzień AS VARCHAR(2)), 2) AS date) AS id_czasu, Produkt.nazwa, SUM(Sprzedaż.kwota) AS kwota, SUM(Sprzedaż.ilosc) AS ilosc FROM Czas INNER JOIN Sprzedaż ON Czas.id_czasu = Sprzedaż.id_czasu INNER JOIN Produkt ON Sprzedaż.id_produktu = Produkt.id_produktu GROUP BY CAST(CAST(Czas.rok AS VARCHAR(4)) + RIGHT('00' + CAST(Czas.miesiąc AS VARCHAR(2)), 2) + RIGHT('00' + CAST(Czas.dzień AS VARCHAR(2)), 2) AS date), Produkt.nazwa Ponadto, dzień z postaci kolejnego numeru identyfikacyjnego (id_czas) otrzymuje postać daty. Podobnych złączeń można dokonywać w osobnych widokach źródła danych dla pozostałych wymiarów.

Parable of the Hummingbird: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas

Restorative Practices International in partnership with the Centre for Restorative Justice, SFU. Filmed, edited and posted by Heartspeak Productions, Producer/Director Larry Moore, Videographer/Editor Cathie Douglas Flight of the Hummingbird; A Parable for the Environment - This little book features artwork by internationally renowned artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. His distinct and lively Haida Manga style engages perfectly with this inspirational story that encourages every individual to act on behalf of the worlds limited and precious resources. http://mny.ca/ Athlii Gwaii: The Line at Lyell (46:30 min.) 2003 Part of the Ravens and Eagles: Haida Art series Jeff Bear/Marianne Jones, Ravens and Eagles Productions In the fall of 1985, a small but resolute troupe of Haida elders journeyed by helicopter to Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island) to join their young counterparts in a stand against clearcutting. Industrial invasion in the remote archipelago had gone too far. Ancient cedar giants and rare spruce trees—lifeblood of Haida art and culture—had been leveled indiscriminately for too long. Buoyed by their courageous Haida elders, protesters united in peaceful resistance. A total of 72 people were arrested, but their tactics garnered global attention and won change: in 1987, the government established the Gwaii Haanas Park Reserve/Haida Heritage Site. http://www.movingimages.ca/catalogue/Art/re_athliigwaii.html

We truly need "all hands on deck" to do it. On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.
