Are we alone in the Universe? It’s one of the most difficult and important questions that humanity can ask. As Arthur C. Clarke noted, it’s equally terrifying whether the answer is yes or no. So if you’re going to find evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations, you want to be absolutely certain about your evidence. You want to find “technosignatures”, unmistakable proof that aliens are out there. Time is money: An animated infographic showing the top three economies throughout history. Does China have the world's largest economy? Is China's economy bigger than America's? Time is money–the world's largest economies throughout history. At the start of the Common Era, India was the world’s largest economy, followed by China. The far-flung Roman Empire came a distant third. A thousand years later, it looked almost the same. But third place shifted to Byzantium, in modern-day Turkey. Five hundred years after that, Italy returned, rich from renaissance trade. Over several centuries, other European powers vied for third: initially France, and then Britain. China and India swapped places. After the industrial revolution, the top three economies accounted for less than half of global output. In the 20th century, America dominated. China temporarily fell away. Russia made the top three. As did Japan. Britain dropped down. Now the modern world resembles the distant past: China and India are back, along with a single Western economy. And America’s preeminence is over. China overtakes US as the world's largest economy. Repurpose your presentation to reach a wider online audience https://www.BrightonWestVideo.com/blog/upload-speaking-gig-youtube/ Do you have a video from a speaking event that you would like to upload to YouTube? In this video, I’m going to show you two things: how to upload a video of your talk on YouTube, and how to reformat your video presentation to reach a huge audience of potential clients and customers who are searching for your content. How to upload your speaking gig to YouTube Go To YouTube. Log in to your account Upload your video file. Click on the button with an arrow with a line underneath that says UPLOAD. Choose the file that you want to upload from your computer (.mov/.mp4/or any video file) then drag and drop it over to YouTube. Add details to your video. Give your video a title, description and tags. Choose if you want your video to be Public, Unlisted, or Private. Publish your video. If your talk was captured by a professional video production company where they use multiple cameras, then that’s all you need. But assuming you only have a recording captured by someone in the audience, then you’ll need to reformat your talk into something your online audience will enjoy. How to reformat your presentation for an online audience Break up your talk into smaller pieces. Create two to four minutes of content. Think of your talk as a bunch of answers to your audience’s questions. Write a script for each video in this format: First, repeat the question and let them know that you’re going to answer it. You can throw in a little branding if you wish (not more than five seconds) then share the answer from your talk. Lastly, give the viewer an action item (i.e. ‘share this video’ or ‘leave a comment below’ or ‘visit my website.’) Record the videos on your webcam or smartphone. Record it close enough so that your head is taking up more than half of the screen. People will be watching you on a two-inch tall screen and you want them to recognize who you are. Upload the videos on YouTube. Add titles, tags, descriptions etc. Share your YouTube videos widely. Share it on LinkedIn, your website, your newsletter, etc. Share this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAbtjCy2l1U&index=1&list=PLDniYQhMu9z83qYf4e-cor2Qmuc4hFc_o ------------- Playlists: More Tutorials to create better YouTube videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDniYQhMu9z-zzOJNHg6q5VXiYJmGo5Y- -------------- Do you have questions about creating video online? More than 3 years in the making, A.O.T.H has finally begun to release our nation state, cyber mercenary and cyber-criminal gang profiles and have made them available for free so that researchers can more easily expedite their understanding of the threats they are studying. No profile is ever ‘complete’ as many advanced persistent threats go dormant, only to resurface with new targets, forensic footprint, malware and exploits. We make every effort to make sure the information is up to date and appreciate any corrections or APT actor evolutions that can make each profile stronger for future readers. We are continuously updating this portal with new actors and additional information on the topic of cyber warfare. Our goal is to create a meaningful portal for researchers to expediently gain insight on threat actors within this space, while simultaneously gaining quick access to current cybercentric trends, news and social media posts on our blog. We invite your feedback so that we can make this free portal more powerful, informative and efficient. We encourage you to subscribe to our newsletter so that you can become part of the A.O.T.H community and stay up to date with the latest topical information updates. Visit http://www.techsoup.org for donated technology for nonprofits and libraries! Do you have concerns about patron privacy at your library? Some argue that libraries should collect, retain, and use patron data to provide better personalized services to patrons. This is a serious challenge to the profession's ethical commitment to protecting patron privacy, especially since many platforms providing these services are operated by vendors who may not share librarians' professional values. We explore these issues and discuss possible frameworks that allow libraries to provide personalized services while maintaining their commitment to protecting patron privacy. Watch this free webinar where we will hear from library privacy experts. Deborah Caldwell-Stone (ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom) will share the legal and ethical foundations for patron privacy, as well as resources that can be used to help libraries preserve privacy when adopting new technology. Michael Robinson (Intellectual Freedom Committee, Alaska Library Association) will share specific examples of how new technologies and platforms can pose a threat to patron privacy, and what can be done to minimize those threats in the library setting.

My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)

An exhibition about monuments and monumentality looks at the role that these structures play as symbols of power. The show includes a wide array of works from across cultures and time, including depictions of the pre-Columbian Nazca lines in the Peruvian desert, a grandiose reconstruction of ancient Rome as depicted by 18th century printmaker Piranesi, rare 19th century photographs that show a citizen’s uprising during the days of the Paris Commune in 1871 and documentation of contemporary earthworks. Presented by Pamela Yost, Watershed Economist, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Morgantown, WV. View the webinar at http://conservationwebinars.net to earn CEUs. The objective of this webinar is to share information and lessons learned from an innovative flood protection project. This webinar will describe how the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service offered a voluntary floodplain buyout for a flood-prone, economically distressed community. This unique approach prevents future flooding problems where dams, channels, and floodproofing may either be more expensive or not physically possible. One hundred properties have been purchased so far. Buildings were removed and the area was returned to natural floodplain. Participate in this webinar to learn more about this project and how it can apply to your local situations.

American newspapers began as modest affairs—a sideline for printers. They became a political force in the campaign for American independence. Following independence the first article of U.S. Constitution guaranteed freedom of the press. The U.S. Postal Service Act of 1792 provided substantial subsidies: Newspapers were delivered up to 100 miles for a penny and beyond for 1.5 cents, when first class postage ranged from six cents to a quarter. The American press grew rapidly during the First Party System (1790s-1810s) when both parties sponsored papers to reach their loyal partisans. From the 1830s onward, the Penny press began to play a major role in American journalism. Technological advancements such as the telegraph and faster printing presses in the 1840s also helped to expand the press of the nation as it experienced rapid economic and demographic growth. Editors typically became the local party spokesman, and hard-hitting editorials were widely reprinted. By 1900 major newspapers had become profitable powerhouses of advocacy, muckraking and sensationalism, along with serious, and objective news-gathering. During the early 20th century, prior to rise of television, the average American read several newspapers per-day. Starting in the 1920s changes in technology again morphed the nature of American journalism as radio and later, television, began to play increasingly important competitive roles. In the late 20th century, much of American journalism became housed in big media chains. With the coming of digital journalism in the 21st century, all newspapers faced a business crisis as readers turned to the Internet for sources and advertisers followed them.

Higher education institutions are increasingly looking to mine student data in order to gain new, actionable insights into student behaviors using learning analytics technologies. Purportedly, these insights can help institutions improve student learning outcomes, increase student engagement, decrease time-to-degree measures, and ameliorate graduation rates. While on the face of it these aims are worthy of the resource expenditures necessary to build capacity for and implement learning analytics practices, there are serious serious threats to long-held values. Student privacy, academic and intellectual freedom, and the trustworthy relationships necessary for successful teaching and learning experiences are all affected by data mining practices that dig into and expose intellectual and social behaviors represented in a wide variety of data. This webinar will discuss the on-the-ground practices of learning analytics, how learning analytics specifically threatens these values, and why institutional actors–such as faculty, librarians, and advisors–should take notice. Special emphasis will be placed on particular concerns that arise when libraries participate in learning analytics with relationship to ALA’s Code of Ethics.
