P. Bayly& K. Connors References:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YNtSatVZMy7NlNnpUrTeAOubN9lvwHmPslOpdSa2INs/edit?usp=sharing Abstract: This video analyzes the problems related to environmental injustice in the city of Durban, South Africa. The systems set in place during Apartheid marginalized the colored people of Durban by mobilizing them to areas of lesser value. Faint legislations regarding environmental and social justice caused large multinational corporations to take advantage of this as the path of least resistance and locate their polluting industries in marginalized communities, like that of the South Durban Basin. The South Durban Basin is home to more than 150 polluting industries, including the Bisasar Road Landfill and two major petrochemical facilities. The Bisasar Road Landfill was created in 1980 in a black community and was intended to transport waste from wealthy areas to impoverished black areas. BP, Shell, and Engen, all oil dependent MNC’s with Anglo origins, have oil refineries in the South Durban Basin neighboring residential areas. Because of weak legislations, these industries and landfills are polluting the area greatly affecting the social and natural environment. Additionally, through systems set during Apartheid, resources such as water were and still are unequally distributed, benefiting the white citizens while leaving the colored people living in ‘black communities’ without accessible and reliable sources of water. Unequal distribution of resources, location of polluting industries, and waste management strategies seen in Durban, South Africa all show signs of institutionalized racism that originates from the time of Apartheid.
Eskom: Coal shortage at 7 power stations
South Africans are not only bracing themselves for a hefty electricity price hike, but the possibly of loadshedding in the near future is also becoming more likely. Seven of Eskom's power stations do not have enough coal. According to reports, the spokesperson of Eskom attributed the shortages to the Tegeta-owned Optimum Coal Mine which supplies coal to the power utility. Tegeta is currently under business rescue. Eskom is currently working with the National Treasury to source more coal and this creates concern about the parastatal's capacity to feed power to the national grid. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is holding public meetings around the country about Eskom's application to get back R 66.6 billion in revenue for the 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 financial years. Joining us from Durban is Khulu Phasiwe, the spokesperson for Eskom. For more news, visit: sabcnews.com

Macua joins the call to end corruption
Thousands of people gathered at Mary Fitzgerald Square in central Johannesburg ahead of a march against corruption organised by the National Union of Metal Workers South Africa (Numsa) on 14 October. Marchers also made their way to the Chamber of Mines, where they handed over a memorandum. ‎ActionAid‬ South Africa's partner – Mining Affected Communities United in Action (‪MACUA)‬ were at the front line of the ‪anti-corruption‬ march, which saw thousands taking to the streets of Joburg's CBD, uniting against corruption and demanding justice and government accountability.‬‬ Christopher Rutledge— AASA’s Mining and Extractives Coordinator explained that MACUA’s voice is crucial to challenge injustice in South Africa. “We think that their involvement in the march was important for the movement of mining affected communities to put their issues on the national agenda. We think it is critical to acknowledge the inextricable connection between institutional corruption and mining,” explained Rutledge. ActionAid South Africa was established in May 2006 and is member of ActionAid International, a global movement of people working together to further human rights.

CBC TV - Africa Freedom day special interview with Matomola Likwanya the vice president of a socialist radical revolutionary movement in Zambia - Economic Liberation Association Africa is not free economically because it’s under the yolk of neo-colonialism and does not control its own economic destiny. A case of Zambia that got independence in 1964 and is one of the most leading copper producing countries in the world with one of the deepest open pit mines is an evident example that the world wonders about including its citizen. Today the country is one of the poorest nations in the world with a population of 15 million people but only benefits 3% from its copper revenues and the rest goes in the hands of foreign multinational companies such as Glencore, one of those imperialistic and capitalistic entities that rip off our natural minerals and leave a disaster of holes in the precious region of the Copper belt, leaving the indigenous people suffer as poverty is marked on their bodies by the filthy rugs they wear as they go to colonial schools, stunted market places and death traps, the so called government hospitals. Zambia got political freedom but to date is not economically free and the people are poorer than they were before and they watch their nation being exploited by foreigners who won the land, mines, banks, shops, houses, industries and if anything control the all entire commerce and trade industry because even the currency the nation uses is printed in France. This is the case of Africa at large, the continent has been colonised again and brought down to its knees because an indigenous African today cannot own arable land, have decent jobs, acquire good health care services, free universal primary education, food and a social welfare support. Our continent is disintegrating because of our misleaders we have entrusted the opportunity to lead us but have ended up selling this continent for a 3 piece suit, Italian leaver belt and a second hand Toyota Japanese vehicle. Our great founding fathers of this continent drew a picture of a thousand words, describing the kind of an Africa they hoped to see, free from corruption, poverty, inequality, colonialism, imperialism, religious disorganization, crime, war, and economic exploitation. The pan African voice of revolution coming from the south by Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia was clear, the action oriented voice of revolution from the west by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana was eloquent, and the voices of reason from Patrice Lumumba from DR Congo, Julius Kambarange Nyerere from Tanzania, Samora Mashal from Mozambique, Nelson Mandela from South Africa, Thomas Sankara from Burkina Faso and many other revolutionary great leaders of this continent, carried the guiding pan African torch for us the future generations to follow and finally achieve the economic liberation of Africa. Today politicians in this continent have colluded with the west to crumble this continent and this is happening in many African countries because good men are quiet, silent and hope that an angel will come down from heaven and solve this problem. The economic Liberation Association is a revolutionary movement of young vibrant Zambians who have realized the need for Zambia and Africa at large to be economically free and has therefore decided to be the change Zambia and Africa at large needs by aspiring for public office come 2021 thus need the help of all well-meaning African citizens and sympathizers around the world to help us liberate our country Zambia and Africa at large- [email protected]/[email protected]/+260971077522/facebook: Economic Liberation Association

Yes, I know. You might jump on a grenade. But there is a little light at the end of the tunnel. Iron Ore miners get high Zacks Industry Rank marks this week, after a spate of earnings estimate upgrades. What’s the catch to that? There are only 5 companies in the industry. And the earnings estimates are going from losing money over the next year to making nothing. Having written that, both agreement and magnitude in recent Zacks Rank earnings estimates turned POSITIVE for Iron Ore stocks. There are recently upgraded Zacks #2 Rank Iron Ore stocks to tell you about. However, the rest of the mining sector, taken in total, is not looking so hot. The idea early investors have (those that are bullish) is that once oil prices turn around, and China turns around -- you get in on this beaten down sector. Foran Mining CEO Patrick Soares Provides an Update on 2015 Catalysts
Foran Mining Corporation (TSXV:FOM) CEO Patrick Soares provided an update on the Company's milestones and catalysts for the remainder of 2015. Foran Mining's flagship project is the McIlvenna Bay Deposit, a large zinc-copper-gold-silver VMS deposit in the western extension of the Flin Flon mining belt in Saskatchewan. The Company recently announced plans to begin metallurgical studies on the Bigstone deposit, which is located southwest of the McIlvenna Bay Deposit. Mr. Soares reported, "Having completed a PEA at McIlvenna Bay, we saw the opportunity to do what we've been telling other people. We believe that the Hanson Lake Camp where McIlvenna Bay is located - we've got a lot of property there - and we believe, like Flin Flon itself, that this is a mining camp. Meaning that there's more than one deposit. In Flin Flon there've been sixteen of these deposits mined, actually more than that discovered, and we decided to take a look at exploring some of the other possible projects or possible deposits near McIlvenna Bay. So early in 2015, we looked at two deposits: one being Bigstone, and then we made a discovery late in 2013, that we continue to do some more drilling on called the Thunder Zone. We had great success in both of those projects. Following that discovery, our catalyst for the rest of the year is we've decided that with Bigstone we've had long intercepts of high grade copper and good grade zinc that we're going to do some metallurgy on that, and see exactly what the recoveries of these metals are. Then following that, we hope to update a resource and bring it up to current standards on Bigstone. If that all goes well, move right into a PEA for a standalone Bigstone mine... and if that works well, then the next step would be to integrate it with McIlvenna Bay and see how that improves the project economics with McIlvenna Bay."

Half mast flags at gold mine where the bodies of 8 trapped miners have been found
A South African gold-mining company said on Thursday it has found the bodies of eight miners who were trapped when a magnitude-2.4 earthquake triggered an underground fire. Flags were flying at half-mast outside the mine on Thursday. Rescue teams are still trying to locate a ninth miner who is missing. The Harmony company said that the tremor also triggered a rockfall about 1.7 kilometres (one mile) underground at the Doornkop mine, west of Johannesburg. Searchers responding to the fire on Tuesday were hampered by smoke and the earthfall. On Wednesday, rescue teams located eight other miners who had sought refuge from the fire and brought them to the surface. IEA: Record 3 billion barrel oil stocks may weaken prices
Oil stock piles are at a record 3 billion barrels and will take months to clear. In its monthly report, the International Energy Agency signals that prices will stay low for a long time - an advantage, or disadvantage depending on whether your country is an exporter or importer. The IEA said global oil supplies breached 97 million barrels per day in October, up 2 million from a year earlier, and raised forecast for 2016 by 200,000 barrels per day to 31.3 million. Oil prices have more than halved in the past 18 months with supply bolstered by U.S. shale oil output and OPEC's refusal to cede market share.
