Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads."

Golden was inhabited by Native Americans and Spaniards long before American settlers came to the area. However, it began to boom when gold was discovered in 1825. Years before the California and Colorado gold rushes, the site of Golden became the first gold rush west of the Mississippi River. https://www.legendsofamerica.com/nm-golden/ Check out Electrified Hobbies, I wouldn't be in the air without them! https://www.electrifiedhobbies.com/ And Remember--- https://ethixltd.com/ Quad Setup- AstroX X5 Silky Frame CL_Racing F4S Spartan 30amp esc Chee Pass motors 2205-2300kv HQ V1s 5050 props Runcam Micro Swift 2 ImmersionRC Tramp VTX Lumenier AXII Stubby LHCP Frsky R-XSR GoPro Session 5

The Cornwall Ore Banks

04:34
The Cornwall Ore Mines, located in Cornwall, Pa, once contained the largest deposit of iron ore east of the Mississippi River. Mined for over 230 continuous years the mines are now depleted. The high grade iron ore spawned the development of many local furnaces and gave rise to several small but colorful railroads. This video is a look back at the rich mining history of the Cornwall Ore Banks. See my other videos for a look at the Cornwall Railroad, Cornwall & Lebanon Railroad, and the Cornwall Iron Furnace. Note: Present day photos were taken with the permission of PRL Inc. The former ore mines are owned by several private companies -- do not trespass.

America's Post-Coal Country Is Struggling To Come Back (HBO)

05:12
For years, politicians have promised to bring jobs and prosperity back to America’s depressed coal-producing regions. But that won’t be so easy to pull off, because in many places the industry didn’t so much decline as vanish. Josh Hersh went to a coal town in West Virginia where the way forward doesn’t lead back to the mines. Dahlonega - Piano

03:22
In 1829, the small town of Dahlonega, Georgia suddenly became the center of the second major gold rush in the US. (pronounced dah-LAWN-egg-uh) Benjamin Parks, attributed by some to have started the rush, described the following chaos: "The news got abroad, and such excitement you never saw. It seemed within a few days as if the whole world must have heard of it, for men came from every state I had ever heard of. They came afoot, on horseback and in wagons, acting more like crazy men than anything else. All the way from where Dahlonega now stands to Nuckollsville there were men panning out of the branches and making holes in the hillsides ." Numerous gold mines were illegally developed in the area. Miners entering into the Cherokee Nation lands came into conflict with the Cherokee, whose territory they had tresspassed. The miners raised political pressure against the Cherokee because they wanted to get to the gold. By 1830, the Federal Government forced the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears as a result of the Indian Removal Act. The United States Mint built a branch mint in Dahlonega in 1837 to coin the gold locally rather than risking the shipment of raw gold to Philadelphia. The Dahlonega Mint was a small operation, usually accounting for only a small fraction of the gold minted annually in the US. Dahlonega gold coinage is prized by numismatists (coin nerds) today. At its height, Dahlonega supported a population of about 15,000 miners. In 1848, news of the California Gold Rush reached Georgia, and many miners moved west in search of more gold. The assayer of the Dahlonega Mint, Dr. M. F. Stephenson, tried to persuade miners to stay in Dahlonega instead of joining the latest gold rush, saying, "There's millions still in it," famously misquoted as "Thar's gold in them thar hills." In 1861 the Dahlonega Mint facility was captured by the South during the Civil War, and after the war ended the US Mint decided against its re-opening. By then, the US government had established a mint in San Francisco. Given the large amount of gold discovered in the California gold rush, the San Francisco and Philadelphia mints were capable of handling the national needs of gold mint production. Years later in December of 1878, a fire burned the original Dahlonega Mint building to the ground. Today, just over 5,000 residents populate the town of Dahlonega.

Google Searches May Be the Best Measure of Human Nature Yet | Seth Stephens-Davidowitz

06:30
Seth Stephens-Davidowitz has a sneaking suspicion that we might not be all that honest with each other. Instead, we seem to be far more honest with a website. The things that people type into the Google search bar, Stephens-Davidowitz says, reveal far more about a person than any in-depth interviewer could ever dream of. Even how racist someone can be. What's alarming is that prior to the 2008 election, Stephens-Davidowitz saw a big uptick in racist searches coming from alarming places. He had expected the South to make perhaps a portion of these searches, but he was shocked to see the searches coming from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and more. And to cap that off, most of those searches were hardly fringe searches: they matched the amount of bigger-name searches like Lakers, migraines, and The Daily Show. But people may lie to surveys. But it’s been shown that people are really, really honest on certain internet sources, particularly their Google searches, so they tell Google things they might not tell to anybody else. They might not tell family members, friends, surveys, even themselves sometimes. And by mining this data we can get better insights into who we are. All the data I analyze is anonymous and aggregate, but you can see patterns in this. So, for example, before an election if you ask people in a survey, “Are you going to vote,” pretty much everybody says yes, or a huge percentage of people say yes, even if they have absolutely no intention to vote just because it makes them feel good to tell a survey that they’re voting. But you can actually see—based on where searches for how to vote or where to vote are highest—how high turnout really will be in different parts of the country. And that’s a very accurate predictor of who is actually going to vote. When I started this research I measured how frequently people made racist searches in the United States. And the searches I looked at were very, very strikingly racist searches looking for basically jokes mocking African Americans. And I was struck by how frequently people are making these searches. In the time period I was looking at, it was as frequent as searches for “Lakers” and “migraine” and “Daily Show” — so not a fringe search. And I was also shocked by where these searches were located. If you had asked me, 'Where’s racism highest in the United States?' before I saw this Google data I would have said the South. If you think of our country’s history, of slavery, the Civil War, we usually think of racism as a Southern issue. But the places with the highest racist search volumes included western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, upstate New York, industrial Michigan. The real divide in racism these days is not north versus south. It’s east versus west, where you get a lot less of this west of the Mississippi River as compared to east of the Mississippi River. And then if you remember the 2008 election, all the way back then when Barack Obama was elected president, after the election there was this question: did people care that he was black? And Gallup asked people and some other surveys asked people and 98 percent, 99 percent of Americans said “No, no, no, no—of course not. This was not a factor in our voting decision.” But you actually see very, very clearly in the data that Obama did far worse than other previous Democratic candidates in places with higher racist search volumes. And this isn’t explained by anything else in the data. It’s not explained by demographics or gun ownership or church attendance or liberalism. The main factor that predicts where Obama did worse than other Democrats is how frequently they made racist searches on Google. Anyway, this data kind of languished I think on my website for a while, but then during the 2016 Republican Primary some data journalists got data on where Trump was doing best in the Republican Primary. Trump, of course, was saying some very, very racially charged things and people were expecting that these were gaffes, that he would collapse because he was saying things that you are not supposed to say, you know: retweeting false statistics about how frequently African Americans commit crimes, or not repudiating support from a former leader of the KKK, saying that Black Lives Matter protestors should be roughed up. And then what these data journalists found is, the single highest predictor of where Trump was doing well was the measure of racist searches on Google.

Dawn Of The American Frontier - Railroad That Tamed The West Documentary - Classic History

44:33
Dawn Of The American Frontier - Railroad That Tamed The West Documentary - Classic History The American frontier comprises the geography, history, folklore, and cultural expression of life in the forward wave of American expansion that began with English colonial settlements in the early 17th century and ended with the admission of the last mainland territories as states in 1912. "Frontier" refers to a contrasting region at the edge of a European-American line of settlement. American historians cover multiple frontiers but the folklore is focused primarily on the so-called "conquest" and settlement of the lands west of the Mississippi River, in what is now the Midwest, Texas, the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Southwest, and the West Coast. This era of massive migration and settlement was particularly encouraged by the Colonial and early United States government following the Louisiana Purchase, and coined the term and political philosophy, "Manifest Destiny". Enormous popular attention in the 19th and early 20th century media focused on the Western United States in the second half of the 19th century, a period sometimes called the Old West, or the Wild West, the theme of which typically exaggerated the romance, anarchy, and chaotic violence of the period for greater dramatic effect. This eventually inspired the Western genre of film, which spilled over into comic books, and children's toys, games and costumes. As defined by Hine and Faragher, "frontier history tells the story of the creation and defense of communities, the use of the land, the development of markets, and the formation of states." They explain, "It is a tale of conquest, but also one of survival, persistence, and the merging of peoples and cultures that gave birth and continuing life to America."[1] Through treaties with foreign nations and native tribes; political compromise; military conquest; establishment of law and order; the building of farms, ranches, and towns; the marking of trails and digging of mines; and the pulling in of great migrations of foreigners, the United States expanded from coast to coast, fulfilling the dreams of Manifest Destiny. Historian Frederick Jackson Turner in his "Frontier Thesis" (1893) theorized that the frontier was a process that transformed Europeans into a new people, the Americans, whose values focused on equality, democracy, and optimism, as well as individualism, self-reliance, and even violence. Thus, Turner's Frontier Thesis proclaimed the westward frontier to be the defining process of American history. Read More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_frontier

What does AMERICAN FRONTIER mean? AMERICAN FRONTIER meaning - AMERICAN FRONTIER definition - AMERICAN FRONTIER explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. The American Frontier comprises the geography, history, folklore, and cultural expression of life in the forward wave of American expansion that began with English colonial settlements in the early 18th century and ended with the admission of the last mainland territories as states in 1912. "Frontier" refers to a contrasting region at the edge of a European-American line of settlement. American historians cover multiple frontiers but the folklore is focused primarily on the 19th century west of the Mississippi River. Enormous popular attention in the media focuses on the Western United States in the second half of the 19th century, a period sometimes called the Old West, or the Wild West, frequently exaggerating the romance and violence of the period. As defined by Hine and Faragher, "frontier history tells the story of the creation and defense of communities, the use of the land, the development of markets, and the formation of states." They explain, "It is a tale of conquest, but also one of survival, persistence, and the merging of peoples and cultures that gave birth and continuing life to America." Through treaties with foreign nations and native tribes; political compromise; military conquest; establishment of law and order; the building of farms, ranches, and towns; the marking of trails and digging of mines; and the pulling in of great migrations of foreigners, the United States expanded from coast to coast, fulfilling the dreams of Manifest Destiny. Historian Frederick Jackson Turner in his "Frontier Thesis" (1893) theorized that the frontier was a process that transformed Europeans into a new people, the Americans, whose values focused on equality, democracy, and optimism, as well as individualism, self-reliance, and even violence. Thus, Turner's Frontier Thesis proclaimed the westward frontier as the defining process of American history. As the American frontier passed into history, the myths of the West in fiction and film took firm hold in the imagination of Americans and foreigners alike. America is exceptional in choosing its iconic self-image. David Murdoch has said: "No other nation has taken a time and place from its past and produced a construct of the imagination equal to America's creation of the West." The frontier line was the outer line of European-American settlement. It moved steadily westward from the 1630s to the 1880s (with occasional movements north into Maine and Vermont, south into Florida, and east from California into Nevada). Turner favored the Census Bureau definition of the "frontier line" as a settlement density of two people per square mile. The "West" was the recently settled area near that boundary. Thus, parts of the Midwest and American South, though no longer considered "western", have a frontier heritage along with the modern western states. In the 21st century, however, the term "American West" is most often used for the area west of the Mississippi River.

Shut Up In The Mines at Coal Creek Hedy West

01:25
Shut Up In The Mines at Coal Creek Hedy West Coal Creek, northwest of Knoxville TN, is a tributary of the Clinch River, and mining led to the founding of a town with the same name, along with two others, Fraterville and Briceville. Coal Creek is the topic of more songs than any other mining area. On Monday, May 19, 1902, the Fraterville miners had just started work when a massive methane explosion sealed off the mine. It took four days to reach them, by which time all 216 had died. Fraterville was left with only three adult males who had not gone to work that day, along with hundreds of widows and a thousand orphans.Miners who weren't killed immediately barricaded themselves in side passages. Before they died, several of them left notes for their families. One example: Alice, do the best you can. I am going to rest. Goodbye Alice. Elbert said the lord had saved him. Do the best you can with the children. We are all perishing for air to support us. but it is getting so bad without any air. Charlie said for you to wear his shoes and clothing. It is now 1- 1/2 o'clock. Marvell Harmon's watch is now in Andy Wood's hands. Ellen, I want you to live right and come to heaven. Raise the children the best way you can. Oh how I would love to be with you. Goodbye to all of you. Bury me and Elbert in the same grave. Tell little Ellen goodbye. Goodbye Ellen. Goodbye Horace. We are together. It is now 25 minutes after 2 o'clock. A few of us are alive yet, Jacob and Elbert. Oh God for one more breath! Ellen, remember me as long as you live. In 1929, a Kentuckian named Green Bailey recorded this song, which was undoubtedly written shortly after the explosion.Another explosion at Briceville, in 1911, resulted in 84 deaths, with two survivors. In 1936, Tennessee Valley Authority's Norris Dam flooded the Clinch River, and the town of Coal Creek became Lake City. Shut up in the mine of Coal Creek, We know that we must die; But if we trust in Jesus To heaven our souls shall fly. Our lamps are burning dimly, Our food is almost gone; Death's grasp is sure but awful, Soon we'll be carried home. Goodbye, dear wives and children, May you be treated kind, For now our time has come to die, Shut up in the Coal Creek mine. Eleven of us were prisoned, And two dear ones have died; Nine more are left to suffer, And die in the Coal Creek mine. Farewell, dear wives and mothers, You're left behind to mourn, But if you follow Jesus, We'll meet in heavenly home. Dear friends, you should take warning, And listen to what we say; You're now in the world of sunlight, So there you'd better stay. taken from an article published: Inside Bluegrass, March 2006, for more information see www.lizlyle.lofgrens.org/RmOlSngs/RTOS-CoalCreekMine.html

Stop Mountaintop Coal Removal

09:25
On June 30, 2008, filmmaker Catherine Pancake discussed her riveting documentary, Black Diamonds: Mountaintop Removal and the Fight for Coalfield Justice. She indicated that federal legislation would be needed to end this insidious method of coal mining, which is laying waste to large areas of Appalachian mountain peaks in her native state of West Virginia. Ms. Pancake said that stopping mountaintop coal removal is a moral issue. For background, please see the following web sites:Black Diamonds: Mountaintop Removal and the Fight For Coalfield Justice; Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition; Mountain Top Removal Mining in West Virginia; Mountain Justice Summer; and, Coal River Mountain Watch.

[35:09 - 41:22] Dougie Maclean/Trevor Jones - The Last of the Mohicans (Promentory) Description of time period: The American Frontier comprises the geography, history, folklore, and cultural expression of life in the forward wave of American expansion that began with English colonial settlements in the early 17th century and ended with the admission of the last mainland territories as states in 1912. David Murdoch has said: "No other nation has taken a time and place from its past and produced a construct of the imagination equal to America's creation of the West."
