Just a quick video from a day of mining at Mason's Ruby and Sapphire Mine. This Franklin, North Carolina area mine is one of the only native (unsalted) ones remaining in the area. It is a dig-your-own operation where you pay a flat day rate to go into the mine and dig buckets of dirt to clean off in the flume.

We had a chance to go rockhounding with our friends, Henry Battistoni & his son Hank, a few weeks ago. Our girls Celeste & Cayley came along as well and we found a large amount of valuable stones! Great Family Fun Activity! Go Rockhounding in Franklin, NC only an hour away from Asheville and worth the trip. We went to the Mason Mountain Mine and dug for rubies, sapphires, quartz, garnets and more. All native rocks and none of the "tourist rock" is thrown in the raw dirt that you mine. This is where you find the serious rockhounds. You have to drive past several other gem mining places to get here, and it is well worth it. http://www.tjrocks.org/

Here's a little short video i made on the Propst Farm in Lincoln county, North Carolina. The Propst farm is know for its corundum. You can also find things like kyanite, quartz, and mica. They say the Propst Farm is an alluvium. An alluvium is a deposit of clay, silt, sand, and gravel left by flowing streams in a river valley or delta.. but what gets me is the structure of these stones. How could it be an alluvium with such defined structure? The stones show no sign of wear. Comment below and let me know what you think! Hope you enjoy! More videos to come! Let me know where you'd like to see next!! Keep digging!

This sapphire turned out to be a little over 8 cts. One of several very nice stones found by us at Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine, near Franklin, North Carolina. This mine is an unsalted (all native stones) dig-your-own operation that is open all year, weather permitting.

In my mind I truly have gone to Carolina. Masons sapphire mine to be exact. We've been here three times in the past four months and I've already made a lifetime worth of memories. It's not only about the people that I love that come with me. It's also about the great people that keep this amazing place alive. While I do look forward to coming back to mine for some more sapphires, I look forward to seeing my second family so much more. Judie, Steve, Al, and the rest of the Mason's Bunch, I love you guys so much and I can not wait to see you all again. Thank you for bringing so much joy to my family and thank you for accepting us as part of your own. The memories we have made here are priceless and thanks to all of you they will forever be irreplaceable. Song by James Taylor - Carolina In My Mind

Here's a bit of aerial video at the Emerald Village in Little Switzerland, NC. The village is set up in an old feldspar mine on McKinney Mine Road. It's an interesting tourist destination if you enjoy minerals, and searching for gem stones. Before the Emerald Village was set up, my dad used to find aquamarine and other interesting mineral specimens among the rubble of the old McKinney Mine. My grandfather used to run a steam shovel there back in the 1930's. As a kid, this was one of my favorite places to play - a short bike ride from where I grew up in the Deer Lick Gap. I don't want to make gem hunting look too easy. So this is how most days are spent for an hour of hunting. All day long moving rock and clearing the way to connect the 2 veins.
