James Peyer is the founder and managing partner of Apollo Ventures, an early stage life science investment fund investing in Europe and the U.S. focused exclusively on breakthrough therapeutics arising from the study of the biology of aging. Apollo founds companies with scientists, invests in early stage therapeutics projects, and works with scientific teams to build biotech companies. The company invests in core technologies that show promise in reversing aging and extending human lifespan. “My whole group thinks of ourselves as scientists first and investors second, and so we really get super, super excited about a specific mechanism of action or a cool new way to develop a drug or a way to target aging,” James says. “That's kind of the hook that brings us into a project much more than some of the traditional financial metrics.” He also gives talks all over the world on the topic of aging, discussing how our newfound knowledge of what makes us age will enable the greatest medical breakthroughs of the 21st century. Investment bubbles and speculative manias have existed for as long as humans have been involved in markets. Is it possible for investors to identify emerging bubbles and then profit from their inflation? Likewise, can investors avoid the bursting of these bubbles, and the extreme volatility and losses found in their aftermath to survive to invest another day? Over 70 years ago, Benjamin Graham and David Dodd proposed valuing stocks with earnings smoothed across multiple years. Robert Shiller later popularized this method with his version of the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio in the late 1990s and correctly issued a timely warning of poor stock returns to follow in the coming years. We apply this valuation metric across more than 40 foreign markets and find it both practical and useful. Indeed, we witness even greater examples of bubbles and busts abroad than in the United States. We then create a trading system to build global stock portfolios, and find significant outperformance by selecting markets based on relative and absolute valuation. Meb will also speak about 13-f research, and "hacking the hedge funds". Mr. Faber is a co-founder and the Chief Investment Officer of Cambria Investment Management. Well, I have a really, really cool magic trick, okay? But it really isn't magic, we'll call it the magic of science, right? One day I saw a magician, okay? I have three daughters and they love going to parties and there was a magician act at the party. And magician's wear what? They wear a hat. So this magician took off his hat and he said to my daughter. He said, "Hey, Riley. Come here." And he said, "Do me a favor. I want you to pour this water into my hat." Now think about it. Water is a liquid right? Liquids flow, you can touch the water, you can hold the water. Liquids change their shape. So she said, "Wait a minute. You want me to pour the liquid into your hat?" He said, "That's right. Pour it into my hat." So my daughter took the liquid, she poured the entire cup of water into his hat. Now remember it's a liquid, so if it was in the cup, it's the shape of the cup. When it went into his hat, it was the shape of his hat. Two seconds later the magician took the hat and he put it on Riley's head and she thought she was going to get wet so she screamed and said, "No." And all of a sudden, the water was gone. She's the one that put it into the hat. She knows she did it, but it was gone. It was magic, right? Actually it wasn't magic. Do you know what the magician used? See he had a trick up his sleeve. He had a special button in that hat and when he pressed the button, something shot out. Do you know what that was? Well, I have it. Do you guys know what this is? Probably, hopefully you don't wear these anymore, okay? But you see this diaper, believe it or not has something inside that is exactly the same powder that the magician had in his hat. It's called diaper powder. You see if I took a scissor and I actually cut this diaper open, you're going to notice that there's cotton and there are different types of materials, but if you went through it, you're going to find inside of that diaper, there's a powder. This powder does something so amazing that you just have to see it. Now nobody was able to see what happened in that hat, because the hat was black. It's opaque. You can't see through things that are opaque. You can't see my heart, because I'm opaque, right? But watch, what if I took a glass of water-- check this out. We're going to make the water disappear using cups that are clear. I like to rhyme. Watch this. Pour half a cup of water, okay? We can make this water green, just so you can see it more clearly, okay? And I'm going to stir it around, and in this cup, that's going to be our magician's hat or the diaper or just in this case, the disappearing water cup. Now you don't want to use a giant heaping teaspoon and that's not going to be in your diaper anyway. You probably could get about a teaspoon and we're going to pour it in. Guys, you're not allowed to take the powder and pour it into the water, because think about it. When the baby goes to the bathroom are you sprinkling the powder when they go to the bathroom or are they going into the powder? They're going into the powder. So I'm going to take this and I'm going to hold this, okay? I'm going to pour and I'm going to pour quickly. Think about it. When babies go to the bathroom, it's pretty fast, okay? You better get into the bathroom fast, quickly. I'm going to take this and I'm going to pour. Ready, set-- uh, oh liquid, liquids flow. Liquids flow, all of a sudden, I'm going to take this cup. That liquid is in this cup. You saw it happen, right? Abbra-cadabra, alla-kazoo, the liquid spell is not on you and the water is gone. You see that? It's on top of my head. Boys and girls, I'm not a magician. This powder is known to be super-absorbent. When something is absorbent it means it's being sucked up. My shirt could absorb water, okay? Think about a paper towel when you have a spill. Mommy says get a towel. You place the paper towel, the towel will absorb and suck up the water. This powder sucked up the water to the point where it will never let it go. Check this out. I could actually squeeze the cup and look at this. I turned the water and it's trapped and it will not come out. And if you want to do a really cool second part to this experiment, but I'm not going to tell you what happens. Put this back in your cup, okay? And ask mom or dad or whoever you live with for salt. Salt that you put on french fries or salad. And take a teaspoon of salt, sprinkle it, one teaspo

Once thought to exist only inside cells, RNA is now known to travel outside of cells and play a role in newly discovered mechanisms of cell-to-cell communication. Are these extracelluar RNAs (exRNAs) involved in diseases like cancer, heart disease or neurological diseases like Alzheimer's? Could scientists learn how to use exRNAs to diagnose diseases earlier or even to treat these diseases? The NIH Common Fund's Extracellular RNA Communication program aims to unlock the mysteries of exRNAs, uncovering their roles in human health and disease.

https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do While biotechnology (biotech) stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) briefly surged following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, these same securities have suffered declines in recent weeks after Trump took aim at companies in this industry. During a press conference on January 11, Trump stated that the pharmaceutical industry was getting away with murder and promised that the U.S. government would begin bidding on drug costs, according to Barron's. (For more, see also: A Primer On The Biotech Sector.) Biotech Takes a Hit The Nasdaq Biotechnology index dropped nearly 4% following this announcement, a development which The Wall Street Journal labeled the wrath of Trump. Several industry ETFs moved in the same direction. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology Index ETF (IBB) fell more than 4% from $287.10 on January 10 to $275.40 the following day, while the ProShares Ultra Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (BIB) plunged more than 6% from $45.69 on January 9 to $42.68 on January 12, Google Finance data reveals. The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) suffered a similar decline, dropping more than 4% from $65.82 to $62.99 on January 11, additional Google Finance figures show. Certain biotech stocks also pushed lower, for example Kite Pharma Inc. (KITE), which fell from as much as $51.74 on January 10 to as little as $48.43 on January 11, a more than 6% decline, according to Google Finance. Industry Outlook Going forward, these equities could potentially suffer further losses should Trump make good with his promise to drive down drug prices. However, achieving this objective could be very difficult, according to Ian Cooper, an analyst for Options University who focuses on the biotech industry. (For more, see also: Drug Makers May Cap Price Hikes in 2017.) Public support for price controls may be there, but the industry is a tough nut to crack, he told Investopedia. As hard as he may try, Trump may not have the leverage he needs to make changes quickly, considering he'll need overwhelming congressional support to make it a reality. Going forward, the biotech industry's fundamentals are strong, noted Cooper, as pharmaceutical companies provide new and innovative treatments and tens of millions of baby boomers retire and demand better care. As a result, the sector may face some short-term issues and headaches, but there is no denying the resiliency and growth of the sector.

http://SupremeMasterTV.com -- Current Media Reports on Livestock Farming's Planet-wide Impacts. Episode: 1706, Air Date: 17 May 2011. Script Greetings, environmentally aware viewers. Today, more and more people are realizing that meat consumption is exceedingly unsustainable, causing tremendous damage to our health and the environment. Meat and dairy production is the leading factor in deforestation, which alone causes about 20% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. But scientists recently have found that calculations of the carbon intensity of beef production, which drives the deforestation, may have been underestimated. On March 7, the reputable research news source, ScienceDaily, explained in an article titled, "Brazilian Beef: Greater Impact on the Environment Than We Realize." "Increased export of Brazilian beef indirectly leads to deforestation in the Amazon. New research from Chalmers and [the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (SIK)] in Sweden that was recently published in Environmental Science & Technology shows that impact on the climate is much greater than current estimates indicate. The researchers are now demanding that indirect effect on land be included when determining a product's carbon footprint. "If this aspect is not taken into consideration, there is a risk of the wrong signals being sent to policy makers and consumers, and we become guilty of underestimating the impact Brazilian beef has on the climate," says Sverker Molander, Professor Environmental Systems Analysis and one of the researchers responsible for the article. "In Brazil, beef production is the major cause of deforestation in the Amazon. The consequence is not only that valuable rainforest disappears -- deforestation also adds to the greenhouse effect. When the carbon-rich forest is burned down to clear land for farming, large amounts of carbon dioxide are released. An estimated 60-70 per cent of the deforested land is used for cattle ranching." The Amazon rainforest is widely known as the lungs of the Earth, a vital producer of oxygen as well as a carbon sink that absorbs greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. In addition, another vast region in Brazil, the Cerrado, is also extremely important -- and likewise under threat due to the livestock industry. The Cerrado is half as large as the Amazon rainforest, covering a huge area of up to 21% of Brazil, equivalent to the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain combined. It is said to contain 5% of the world's animal species as the world's biologically richest savannah. But according journalist Mr. Martin Hickman, writing on April 11 for the UK-based newspaper, "The Independent," the Cerrado forest may be even more endangered than the Amazon. He wrote: "What was, only a generation ago, an almost unbroken two million square kilometer mass of trees and bushes in central Brazil is now covered with fields of soy beans, waiting to be fed to pigs and chickens in Europe and China. Such has been the pace of conversion to agriculture that more than 50 per cent of the Cerrado has already been lost, threatening the future of some of the region's most charismatic animals. After decades of conversion to cattle farming and agriculture, overwhelmingly soy, but also corn and coffee, only 20 per cent of pristine Cerrado remains, much fragmented between farmland. Inside the country, [the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)] is stressing the region's role as the supplier of drinking water for the capital Brasilia. Michael Becker, leader of WWF Brazil's Cerrado programme, said: "The Cerrado is very important for Brazil because it is the water basket; many Brazilian rivers begin in the Cerrado..." ...Wildlife groups fear that soy production to meet rising global demand for meat has shifted from the Amazon rainforest to Brazil's lesser known interior. ...WWF is hoping that consumers in Europe -- which imports around 30 per cent of Brazil's soy -- will eat less meat to reduce environmental damage..." There is a constant stream of research findings about the serious environmental impacts of meat production, ranging from biodiversity loss and global warming -- as we have just seen -- to excessive pollution. On April 10, BBC News' environment analyst Mr. Roger Harrabin reported on a new study, which was the first of its kind assessing nitrogen pollution in Europe. The study found that livestock farming could shorten an average EU resident's lifespan by six months. "Nitrogen pollution from farms, vehicles, industry and waste treatment is costing the EU up to £280 billion (320 billion euros) a year, a report says. The study by 200 European experts says reactive nitrogen contributes to air pollution, fuels climate change and is estimated to shorten the life of the average resident by six months. Livestock farming is one of the biggest causes of nitrogen pollution, it adds. It calls for changes in farming and more contro

Black-box medicine—the use of opaque computational models to make care decisions—has the potential to shape health care by improving and aiding many medical tasks. For example, IBM Watson for Oncology is a machine-learning system that intends to help clinicians quickly identify essential information in patients’ medical records and explore treatment options for 13 cancers. However, it has only recently emerged that the recommendations Watson for Oncology gave for cancer treatments were “often incorrect” and that IBM kept this defect secret for over a year. What are the ethical and legal issues of black-box medicine? When do algorithms operate like a “black box“? How can we ensure that artificial intelligence technologies deliver what they promise? In Frankenstein's Cat: Cuddling Up to Biotech's Brave New Beasts, Emily Anthes takes readers from Petri dish to pet store, exploring how the world's fauna are being reinvented. She searches for the revolutionary breeds of beasts that are slowly taking their places in the world. What do these creatures look like? Who is behind creating them? What do these new scientific superpowers mean for animals? And what do the ways in which we're choosing to shape animal bodies say about humans? About the Author Emily Anthes is a journalist whose articles have appeared in Wired, Discover, Psychology Today, Slate, Scientific American, and more. She holds a master's degree in science writing from MIT and a bachelor's degree in the history of science and medicine from Yale. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her dog, Milo. Reviews "An elegant tour of the wild and fraught sideshow of animal biotechnology . . . The author generates a sense of awe when appropriate and, when called for, skepticism and an openness to other qualms, particularly issues of ethics, exploitation and commodification . . . In a bell-clear voice, the author examines the science behind genes, as well as cloning, cyborg insect armies, rescue rat-bots, "mass production of mutant mice" in China, bomb-sniffing beetle drones, prosthetic tails for dolphins, the possibility of enhancing animal sensory skills, and " 'pharming,' in which simple genetic tweaks turn animals into living pharmaceutical factories." Anthes lays out the facts, but it is still up to readers to decide which side of the ethical divide they will fall on. Learned, entertaining and illuminating." —Kirkus Reviews "Animals are fascinating if reluctant soldiers in the biotech revolution, writes journalist Anthes in this witty and thought-provoking book. Scientists, it turns out, have produced cyborg cockroaches, genetically altered mice whose brains we can control, and goats that express commercial drugs in their milk. Bizarre, to be sure, but undoubtedly beneficial: animals play a crucial role in the development of myriad products that make life better for humans. But what about the creatures' quality of life? Many decry the use of animals in experiments (though Anthes points out that Americans spend $300 billion 'every year eating animal flesh'), yet even Charles Darwin, a staunch opponent of animal cruelty, refused to 'condemn invasive animal research.' Still, that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to make that invasion less intrusive. Anthes argues that we are making our way through the ethical thicket. Ever-tinier microprocessors, receivers, and batteries let us tag and track 'an ever-expanding menagerie of marine and terrestrial species,' from seals to bees and the currents and winds they travel on. Anthes is optimistic we will 'use our scientific superpowers wisely' to make life better for both the 'creatures that live in scientific labs and those that run them.'" —Publishers Weekly

Harald talked to us about his experiences & research : From the lies of peak oil & “no-fossil” fuel to the AI alien black goo, Harald Kautz-Vella will discuss this black alien nanotech outbreak & substance absorbing all of human consciousness via the Transhumanist agenda & its DNA degenerative program. Can Environmental medicine heal mankind amidst this dark era crippled with viruses issued from military labs, possibly an end-cycle? Will the AI infection swallow & digest all of human soul intelligence, or will we be sent back to oblivion and a new Atlantean flooding cycle, and a possible reset for our civilization? We covered many topics, among which : the energies behind the Kundalini snake, the dangers of 5G, Earth & alien black goos, Tesla, morgellons, ruling bloodlines, the blue avians, psychotronics, the demonic agenda, the demiurge, the cleansing solutions, questions from listeners. His revealing work is founded on a combination of biophoton research and scalar physics. His story that starts with hard-core chemistry and physics leads us, via exposing the hidden agenda of the anti-natural assimilation of all natural life forms on this planet, at the end towards spiritual transcendence. Harald is one of those rare researchers who can put together both the spiritual-metaphysical and the scientific. He started to look at the topics of AI, chemtrails, Morgellons, Smart Dust, and nano-technologies while looking at environmental protection analysis and, “came across a number of substances that shouldn’t have been in nature because they are 100% artificial, and they are high-tech, and if you root these substances back to what they are designed for, you come to Transhumanistic technologies, which is the attempt to get an interface between artificial intelligence and biological. If you ask the Transhumanists themselves, they would always say they would like to give humans better access to AI — and if you look into the technologies, it’s always to the opposite way round, it’s always giving the AI access to the human, in the sense of getting the human system controlled from the outside.” Is this control exogenous, anomalous for sure, but alien in a way? http://www.timeloopsolution.com/english/index_e.html The time loop-Consortium : time loop is a consortium of scientists founded in 2013 with the objective to understand the morgellons disease and announce possible prophylactic solutions to be found in the field of Environmental Medicine. The Stanford Graduate School of Business View From The Top speaker series hosted venture capitalist John Doerr in a question and answer session where he helped enlighten students on such topics as start-ups, healthcare and jobs in emerging markets. Doerr, general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, emphasized that, "The best entrepreneurs are the ones who really go the distance with their companies, who are always learning." During the presentation, Doerr also emphasized that the investments Kleiner Perkins have made are in companies that are at the top of their game, a virtual who's who of successful ventures that also value job creation. Students also heard a personal story Doerr shared about his early career at Intel when he talked his way into Andrew Grove's first course at the company in which the chip maker taught his organizational philosophy. Doerr serves on boards in the areas of Internet technologies and greentech, including Amyris, Bloom Energy, Essence Healthcare, Flipboard, FloDesign Wind Turbines, Google, iControl, mCube, Renmatix and Quantumscape. A big thanks to all current and future patrons who are helping fund this science communication outreach via Patreon: http://bit.ly/2Sfmkph Symbiosis is close and often long-term interaction between different biological species. The definition of symbiosis is controversial among scientists. Some believe symbiosis should only refer to persistent mutualisms, while others believe it should apply to all types of persistent biological interactions (i.e. mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic). In this video we show how you can simply visualize all three. This week Reactions is looking at the chemistry behind anti-aging creams. We headed to the science to see if the claims to make your skin smooth are true! Skin can stay firm and stretchy thanks to protein fibers called collagen and elastin in the tissue beneath the surface. But environmental factors like smoking or ultraviolet rays from the sun can produce free radicals that damage skin cells’ ability to make more of these supports. Anti-wrinkle products claim they keep the skin surface fresh and rejuvenate these cells, but does their chemistry legit? The 25th anniversary of the White House OSTP is celebrated at MIT with a day-long symposium on science and technology policy, held on May 1, 2001. Talks and panel discussions are presented throughout the day by eight former presidential science policy advisors who speak on issues they faced while in office, and by other distinguished speakers who offer a prospective look at science and technology policy concerns. During the day's afternoon session, titled “Cross-Cutting Issues,” the audience hears from: • Rita Rossi Colwell, “Confronting the Human Capital Crisis: Tapping the Talent” (Director, National Science Foundation); • William Wolf, “New Engineering Ethics: Great Achievements and Grand Challenges” (President, National Academy of Engineering); • Prof. Daniel E. Hastings, “Technology and Policy Education Needs” (Director, Technology Policy Program, MIT Engineering Systems Division; MIT AeroAstro); • Charles Holland, “Defense Technology” (Director of Information Systems, Dept. of Defense); • Institute Professor Phillip Sharp (speaking about political issues and biotechnology); • David D. Clark, “Internet Communications and Information Technology” (Senior Research Scientist, MIT LCS); • Prof. Ronald Prinn, “The Greenhouse Gamble” (Director, MIT EAPS). MIT President Charles M. Vest concludes the symposium. The White House OSCP was established by Congress in 1976 to provide the President and others within the Executive Office of the President with advice on the scientific, engineering, and technological aspects of the economy, national security, homeland security, health, foreign relations, the environment (including global climate change), and the technological recovery and use of resources, among other topics.
