The smell of melting plastic was the start. The more power I used the more it smoked until finally... no more power. A poor mechanical connection between the wires and the terminal block caused it to heat up at that point, melting the insulation on the wires and the plastic casing of the transfer switch. This eventually led to the copper wires melting which led to an open circuit. After this happened I discovered that a recall notice was issued on Sep 14, 2012 by Jayco, Inc about the IOTA transfer switch. "Jayco is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 and 2011 Greyhawk Class C motorhomes, model year 2008-2011 Melbourne Class C motorhomes, and 2008-2010 Octane Sport Utility travel trailers manufactured from May 21, 2007, through September 10, 2010, equipped with Iota-brand transfer switches. These trailers may have an improper electrical connection at the buss bar on the affected transfer switches. This improper connection may lead to overheating and melting of the transfer switch. Consequence: Overheating and melting of the transfer switch increases the risk of a fire."

Heart Interface Freedom 10 inverter was making a very loud buzzing noise on and off. It turned out to be the fan inside the inverter dying. The sound was loud and you could feel the vibration inside the bus. If your inverter is making a racket but everything is charging and working as normal, it could also be your fan. WARNING!! When working on anything electrical, please make sure all electrical sources are disconnected. We had the generator off of course and disconnected from shore power and also disconnected the batteries from the inverter to avoid electric shock. I would also recommend hiring a professional electrician to work on anything electrical unless you know what you are doing. The freedom 15, 20 and 25 may be similar in build as well as magnum brand inverters.

A 20 minute video on how to install a new RV converter. Might be a bit overkill on some things & I could have edited it down more, but lack of time didn't allow me to do so. I hope this video can be of help to others as when I did a search for information, I really could not find anything in detail. Thanks for watching!

Steps I took to upgrade the stock WFCO 8955 converter / battery charger in my RV to a better one: the Progressive Dynamics 4655. The WFCO is famous for almost never switching into bulk mode (fast charging mode) no matter how low of a charge the batteries have. Because of this limitation, it's impractical to dry camp - unless one plans on having to run their generator all day and night. I haven't gotten the new PD4655 to output 55 amps to the batteries just yet, but it's already preforming MUCH better than the WFCO. I'm certain that once I upgrade the battery cable gauge from AWG #6 to AWG #3, I'll get an even faster battery charge - in a matter of a few hours instead of 12+ hours. Even without upgrading the wiring, the PD4655 is already charging the batteries much faster. NOTE: Tech support gave me instructions for fixing the problem with the green status LED not working. It turns out that the conductors in the 4-pin connector were in connected (at the factory) in the wrong sequence. I've posted the simple fix here: http://public.fotki.com/kevinkey/misc/ PD4655 WFCO 8900 PD4600 8955

The video shows that the springs holding the contacts for power to the Inverter source are losing tension to the point where we hit a bump the AC power is lost to satellite tv, computers etc. - enough to kill them. This is our theory - When outside power is on, electromagnet holds contacts down - on the road it is some spring that holds the contacts to the inverter power leads and that/those springs have lost strength.
