FIFO Mental Health: What Can We Do?
The Centre for Transformative Work Design (CTWD) invites you to a breakfast event at which the findings of its ground-breaking research report*, Impact of FIFO work arrangements on the mental health and wellbeing of FIFO workers, will be unpacked by the lead authors, Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow, Professor Sharon K. Parker, and Dr Laura Fruhen, and a panel of leading stakeholder representatives: Tony Wittcomb (Head of Health and Safety, Roy Hill), Michael O'Hanlon (Workplace Engagement Manager, Beyond Blue) and Glenn McLaren (Assistant State Secretary, Australian Manufacturing Workers Union). While the research found that FIFO workers are twice more likely to experience high levels of psychological distress than non-FIFO workers, there is reason for hope. The report included 18 detailed recommendations which, if acted on together by employers, managers, FIFO workers and their families, will prevent the emergence of mental ill-health amongst FIFO workers. * CTWD would like to acknowledge that the research would not have been possible without the funding provided by the WA Mental Health Commission and the input of many FIFO workers and their families. Date: Thursday, March 21 2019 Time: 7.15am for a 7.30am start (until 9.00am) Venue: Pan Pacific Perth, Grand River Ballroom, 207 Adelaide Terrace, Perth Cost: $70 per person Proceeds will go towards FIFO research being carried out by CTWD Register here: https://payments.curtin.edu.au/OtherTransactions/booking?UDS_ACTION_DATA=FV4jBUc0WHZOKSYES0JDDFggQgw9WTcbWTFEXg8zXUYAMC1S

Creating a mentally healthy work culture: Graeme Cowan interviewed on NBC USA
www.GraemeCowan.com.au www.LinkedIN.com/in/graemecowan1 Leadership and Creating a Mentally Healthy Work Culture I see a world where one day we will have leaders who seek to create thriving tribes that focus equally on the wellbeing and performance of their group. Their goal will be that every employee will leave work as healthy as they arrive. It is sobering to realize that depression and stress disorders currently account for 34% of lost productivity through absenteeism and presenteeism according to a Medibank study – and yet 86% of those afflicted would rather suffer in silence, than discuss their illness. Whilst many leaders acknowledge that healthy employees are productive employees, many are sceptical that integrated wellbeing programs can produce a compelling return on investment. A recent PWC report commissioned by beyondblue, estimated that for every $1.00 invested in mental health programs, $2.30 will be returned to the bottom line. In the mining industry, that return was estimated to be as high as $15.00 for every $1.00 spent. So, how do we create a culture that produces mentally healthy and high performing tribes? Link to Purpose and Values McKinsey research, in the book Beyond Performance ,shows that 70% of change efforts fail to reach all their objectives, because leadership fails to adequately plan for employee mental wellbeing. Mental wellbeing initiatives must be linked to organisational purpose and values and not viewed as something “extra”. The strategy should be communicated concisely, and with several supporting stories and examples. Leadership ownership A recent Harvard global study of 19,000 employees showed that only 25% of employees believed that their leader lived a balanced and sustainable lifestyle. The one in four employees that believed this, were shown to be 52% more engaged, have 72% higher wellbeing, and had twice the trust in their leader . The best thing a leader can do to create a mental healthy work culture, is to lead a healthy life themselves, because their actions speak louder than words. Multiyear plan Culture doesn’t change overnight, especially with the stigma associated with mental illness. When you consider almost 9 out of 10 of those afflicted would rather suffer in silence than share their condition with work colleagues, a long term plan is essential. Organisations should be regularly assessing the impact of stress on employees, and how willing they are to share that stress with their work colleagues. Some of Australia’s most successful organisations are including these questions in their annual engagement surveys. Identify Champions There should not only be mental health champions at the executive level, but throughout the organisation. A Wesley Mission survey showed that 85% of Australians know someone close to them with depression or a stress disorder, and these employees with firsthand experience should be asked to be involved. Soliciting their input for the design and communication of programs will be central to success. Create a Variety of Programs and Resources Leaders should know the early signs of distress, make help seeking easier, encourage mentally healthy work rituals, and improve their coaching skills. There should be programs and resources that help employees to stay mentally healthy, and also to assist those that have slipped into distressed situations. Because of stigma of mental illness, it is essential that programs can be accessed anonymously. Target High Risk Employees Many organisations have observed that mental stress and absenteeism is highest where engagement levels are lowest. Central to improving health outcomes is identifying the specific groups in which employees are disengaged, and customizing remedial plans accordingly. An R U OK? Ethos Tribes should engender a culture of self-compassion and compassion. Our first responsibility is to regularly ask ourselves “Am I OK?” and create daily rituals that strengthen us, and then to ask distressed colleagues “Are you OK?”, and encourage help seeking. Monitor Progress and Share Success Stories What gets measured gets managed. Organisations should not only monitor absenteeism, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) usage and employee turnover, but also include formal and informal early warning systems to their employee dashboard to pre-empt problems. They should be very actively sharing the success stories that are producing better health and performance. The recent cluster of FIFO worker suicides show that organisations can no longer wait for these problems to fix themselves. Investing in aligned solutions must start now. Graeme Cowan is one of Australia’s leading experts in building performance and wellness in the workplace. A director of R U OK?, Mr Cowan endured five years of depression that cost him his job as a joint managing director.

2016 Lecture 04 Maps of Meaning: Anomaly
Much of the complexity of the world is hidden from us while we pursue our focal, goal-directed actions. However, when our plans go wrong, and we don't get what we want, what we have ignored resurfaces. If the disruption is severe enough, major parts of our identity have to be reconfigured. This can be difficult to the point of trauma. --- SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL --- Direct Support: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/donate Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson --- BOOKS --- 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: https://jordanbpeterson.com/12-rules-for-life/ Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief: https://jordanbpeterson.com/maps-of-meaning/ --- LINKS --- Website: https://jordanbpeterson.com/ 12 Rules for Life Tour: https://jordanbpeterson.com/events/ Blog: https://jordanbpeterson.com/blog/ Podcast: https://jordanbpeterson.com/podcast/ Reading List: https://jordanbpeterson.com/great-books/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.b.peterson/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drjordanpeterson --- PRODUCTS --- Self Authoring Suite: https://selfauthoring.com/ Understand Myself personality test: https://understandmyself.com/ Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/jordanbpeterson

Aboriginal Youth & Media Conference at MOA (Part One)
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the Museum of Anthropology. "Assert, Defend, Take Space: Aboriginal Youth Conference on Identity, Activism and Film" was a day-long conference on issues of concern to Aboriginal youth. Artists from the Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth exhibition were joined by young filmmakers and activists from across Canada. Building off of the screened films, panelists discussed themes of youth identity and politics, the objectification of Indigenous women, and environmentalism and youth activism. "Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth" is an exhibition that looked at the diverse ways urban Aboriginal youth are asserting their identity and affirming their relationship to both urban spaces and ancestral territories. Unfiltered and unapologetic, over 20 young artists from across Canada, the US, and around the world define what it really means to be an urban Aboriginal youth today. In doing so they challenge centuries of stereotyping and assimilation policies. This exhibit will leave visitors with the understanding that today's urban Aboriginal youth are not only acutely aware of the ongoing impacts of colonization, but are also creatively engaging with decolonizing movements through new media, film, fashion, photography, painting, performance, creative writing and traditional art forms. Artists in the exhibition include Alison Bremner (Tlingit), Deanna Bittern (Ojibwe), Jamie Blankenship-Attig (Nlaka’pamux, Secwepemc, Nez Perce, Muskoday Cree), Kelli Clifton (Tsimshian), Jeneen Frei Njootli (Vuntut Gwitchin), Ippiksaut Friesen (Inuit), Clifton Guthrie (Tsimshian), Cody Lecoy (Okanagan/Esquimalt), Arizona Leger (Fijian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori), Danielle Morsette (Stó:lō /Suquamish), Ellena Neel (Kwakwaka'wakw/Ahousaht), Zach Soakai (Tongan, Samoan), Diamond Point (Musqueam), Crystal Smith de Molina (Git’ga’at), Nola Naera (Maori), Kelsey Sparrow (Musqueam/Anishinabe), Cole Speck (Kwakwaka'wakw), Rose Stiffarm ((Siksika Blackfoot, Chippewa Cree, Tsartlip Saanich, Cowichan, A'aninin, Nakoda, French, & Scottish), Taleetha Tait (Wet’suwet’en), Marja Bål Nango (Sámi, Norway), Harry Brown (Kwakwaka'wakw), Anna McKenzie (Opaskwayak Cree, Manitoba), Sarah Yankoo (Austrian, Scottish, Algonquin, Irish and Romanian), Raymond Caplin (Mi’gmac), Emilio Wawatie (Anishanabe) and the Northern Collection (Toombz/Shane Kelsey [Mohawk], and the Curse/Cory Golder [Mi’maq]). Also included are works from the Urban Native Youth Association, Musqueam youth and the Native Youth Program. 2016 Hall of Distinguished Alumni - College of Agriculture, Food & Environment
UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment inducts 2016 Hall of Distinguished Alumni The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment today inducted five new members to its Hall of Distinguished Alumni. This year’s recipients - an entrepreneur, a NASA nutritionist, a Wall Street executive, a family and consumer scientist and an animal scientist - showcase the vast career options available to alumni from the college. Robert Hall Jr. of Georgetown, received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1955. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a food inspector and held herdsman positions in the Northeast and at UK. In 1964, he purchased a small business, Farmers Feed Mill, which through product development and service has grown into a company with worldwide markets. Hall continues to serve as president of the Lexington-based company. In addition to growing a successful company, he has a history of service to agriculture and his community. For example, he sponsored the first Honor Flight from Bluegrass Airport to Washington, D.C., for Central and Eastern Kentucky World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans to visit the memorials dedicated to their service. Barbara Landrum Rice of Bellaire, Texas, spends her days working with astronauts as a research dietitian at the Johnson Space Center. The Simpson County native graduated from UK with a degree in dietetics in 1962. She went on to receive her master’s degree in nutrition at California State University. Rice directed the nutrition training program at the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, started a private practice in nutrition consulting for children and adults and taught at two universities before moving to Texas. At NASA, she has worked with both U.S. and Russian crews. Her expertise has been called on many times over the years including when NASA assisted in the rescue of trapped Chilean miners, as nutrition was an important component of their successful rescue. Rice is the author of numerous publications and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Bonnie O. Tanner of Harrodsburg, received her bachelor’s degree in home economics at UK in 1963 and master’s and doctoral degrees in agricultural and extension education at the University of Maryland. During her career, she established a home economics program at a Kentucky mental hospital, creating training for community re-entry. She taught middle school students home economics, was an extension agent and associate professor in Maryland. She joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture where her work in women’s leadership, dietary guidelines, farm to school and food and fitness were nationally and internationally recognized. She returned to UK in 1999 and served for five years as assistant director for family and consumer sciences. She then transitioned to working on special projects for the college until her retirement in 2007. During her tenure at UK, she developed unique partnerships in the arenas of public health and is the co-founder of the Kentucky Women in Agriculture organization. Myra Leigh Tobin, a native of Harned, received her bachelor’s degree at UK in home economics in 1962, a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Ohio State and an MBA from New York University. Involved in many activities while in school, she became a trailblazer in the business world. She began her career with Goldman Sachs and then moved to New York-based insurance firm Marsh and McLennan Companies, where she rose through the ranks to become senior vice president, then managing director, a position she held until retiring in 1998. Tobin, of New York, has been a leader in professional and community organizations and remained connected to her Kentucky roots through the family farm. She has served as president of the UK Alumni Association and served for six years on the UK board of trustees. She helped raise more than $2 million for First Presbyterian Church in New York City and supported UK HealthCare with the construction of the Myra Leigh Tobin Chapel in the UK hospital. The late James D. Kemp, a native of Pickett, spent nearly 40 years teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students in Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Kentucky, many of whom today are well-recognized in their respective careers. He was instrumental in helping to establish the food science program in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He also helped to initiate what is now a well-known event at the Kentucky State Fair – the annual grand champion ham auction. Kemp died on Feb. 17, 2015. The Hall of Distinguished Alumni awards are presented annually and are a joint program of the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the UK Ag & HES Alumni Association. It is the highest alumni award bestowed by the college.
David Wilcock | Corey Goode: The Antarctic Atlantis [MUST SEE LIVE DISCLOSURE!]
Are we about to hear that ancient ruins have been found in Antarctica? Is there an Alliance working to defeat the greatest threat humanity has ever faced on earth? Could the Antarctic Atlantis be part of a full or partial disclosure? Join David Wilcock on a thrill ride of discovery, beginning with Part One where he presents data on the Secret Space Program and shares the stage with legendary insider Corey Goode. This is the best public summary David and Corey have done of this amazing story that has captivated the UFO community. Part Two begins at the 53-minute mark, with David connecting the dots between intel from multiple insiders to arrive at a stunning conclusion -- that we are on the verge of major new releases of information that will transform everything we thought we knew about life on earth. A civilization of "Pre-Adamite" giants with elongated skulls appears to have crash-landed on a continent we now call Antarctica some 55,000 years ago. Various groups we collectively call the Alliance are working to defeat the Cabal / Illuminati / New World Order, thus making the headlines crazier by the day. If the Alliance succeeds, their plan is now to begin the disclosure process by telling us there was a civilization in Antarctica. We are already seeing multiple, compelling hints of this in corporate media. Find out what the insiders are telling us and help spread the word! This is a two-and-a-half-hour excerpt from David's Friday and Saturday presentations at the Conscious Life Expo 2017. In their original form they run six hours. David also spoke for three hours on Monday, presenting an incredible new model of the Cosmos based on sacred geometry -- and proving that the Sun is going to release a DNA-transforming burst of energy in our near future. If You Wear Rings on Different Fingers, It Says a Lot About You
Which fingers do you wear rings on? Rings aren't just beautiful jewelry. They can say a lot about your relationship status, level of education, and even your personality! Everything depends on the finger on which you're wearing a ring. So, if you wanna learn about the meanings of rings on different fingers, watch our new video! For example, according to Chinese philosophy, a ring on the right thumb means flexibility and the ability to adapt to the will of other people. A ring on the left index finger means that you long for power and want to be in charge. A ring on the right middle finger is associated with the ability to analyze situations correctly and make your own independent. A ring on the left index finger means that you long for power and want to be in charge. TIMESTAMPS: Right Thumb 0:49 Right Index Finger 1:34 Right Middle Finger 2:15 Right Ring Finger 2:53 Right Pinky Finger 3:17 Left Thumb 3:36 Left Index Finger 4:10 Left Middle Finger 4:45 Left Ring Finger 5:07 Left Pinky Finger 6:00 On your thumbs 6:41 On your index fingers 7:07 On your middle fingers 7:53 On your ring fingers 8:24 On your pinky fingers 9:01 #yourpersonality #chinesephilosophy #fingers Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - If it’s a woman wearing a ring on her right thumb, she may be kind of a tomboy. This may also hint that she's pretty stubborn and has a quick temper. - In some cultures, a ring on this finger symbolizes marriage. Aside from this, a ring on the right index finger doesn't seem to have any particular meaning. But some people believe that such a ring is connected to a person's thirst for power. - According to astronomy, the right middle finger is connected with Saturn. Being the middle finger, it may also represent balance. - The right ring finger is the finger where people in some countries place wedding rings: Norway, Russia, Poland, Greece, and Cuba, for example. On the other hand, this may mean that a person is divorced or has lost their spouse. - A ring on this finger is the ring of your professional status. This means that you have a degree in some discipline or proficiency in a particular sphere. Such rings are usually made of stainless steel or iron. - A ring on the left middle finger doesn't have any particular meaning, serving as a decoration and symbolizing beauty. - In many countries, a ring on the left ring finger is either a wedding or engagement ring. - Traditionally, if a man wears 2 rings on his left pinky, it means that he's married — the top ring is a signet ring, and the bottom one indicates his marriage. This practice isn't so popular nowadays, and it might eventually die out. - Not many people choose to wear rings on their thumbs. Typically, most of the people who do are men as it serves as a symbol of their manliness. If a woman wears a ring on this finger, it emphasizes her strong character. - According to experts, these are the best fingers for women to wear rings on. If that's how you wear your rings, you're a natural peacemaker. - If you're single but like wearing a ring on your ring finger, you're a very romantic person. Family and love are vital components of life for you, and you're emotional and sensitive. - People who wear rings on their pinky fingers are friendly, talkative, and sociable. They form strong connections with the people around them. In addition, they are intelligent and have developed intuition. How to Ace a Telephone Interview & Get the Job
Watch more How to Ace Job Interviews videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/180143-How-to-Ace-a-Telephone-Interview-and-Get-the-Job Step 1: Arrange a good time Arrange a time when you can speak freely without interruptions. That means no kids, dogs, or nosy co-workers anywhere nearby. Tip Keep your resume on hand in case an employer calls unannounced. Step 2: Give good phone Take the call on a landline; cell phones are vulnerable to poor reception and dropped calls. If you have call waiting, check with your phone service about suspending it during scheduled interviews. Whatever phone number you left as your contact, make sure its outgoing message is professional. Step 3: Prepare notes Unlike an in-person interview, you can have notes in front of you. Take advantage by setting up information cheat sheets about the company and your interviewer. Organize your notes in bulleted points so you don't sound rehearsed, and prepare answers to common questions, like, "Why do you want to work for our company?" Tip If your interviewer is in another part of the country, check their local news so you'll have some timely icebreakers ready. Step 4: Know your salary needs Know your salary requirements. Because phone interviews are sometimes a way to narrow an applicant pool, many prospective employers begin the dialogue with that discussion. Step 5: Rehearse Record a mock phone interview with a friend so you can correct any verbal tics like speaking too fast or saying "you know" too often. Step 6: Make silence golden Make sure you're far away from anything that could make a distracting sound, and be sure to mute your computer, cell phone, and PDA to avoid interruptions. Step 7: Give a performance Sit or stand up straight during the interview, wear something professional, and smile when you speak. You may feel silly, but speech experts say it will make you sound more alert and self-possessed. Tip Use a headset if you can. It will allow you to move around and make the gestures you normally make when you speak, which will help you come across as more relaxed and confident. Step 8: Shut up occasionally Don't be a blabbermouth. The interviewer is likely taking notes, so give them some time to do so. Step 9: Send a thank you End a phone interview the way you would end an in-person one – by sending a written note or e-mail thanking the interviewer for their time and reiterating your interest in the position. Did You Know? A candidate who flushed the toilet during a phone interview made a top-10 list of the worst job-hunter blunders.

5150 - Psychiatric Hold - KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! Mental Health
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY Today I talk about 5150 - Involuntary Psychiatric Hold & patient rights. Know that I will do more videos on this, because I have heard from many of you that this is something you are concerned about. Today’s video is focused on what rights we have when placed on a 72 hour hold, or a 5150. Since I am not a lawyer and only know what I have to do as a therapist, I had to do some research. Now we know that there are requirements for a therapist being able to place you on a hold, but in case you forgot there are three reasons: 1) you are a danger to yourself 2) you are a danger to someone else 3) you are gravely disabled (this means that you are unable to take care of yourself). This could be an inability to keep up hygiene, pay bills, feed yourself etc. If you find yourself struggling with any of those, you may either take yourself to the hospital or be placed in their by a professional. Once in there you do have the right to appeal the decision. This means that you don’t believe you are a danger to yourself or others or gravely disabled. You can file a writ of habeas corpus which pretty much means you are contesting the hold. However, the ability to actually file this has to be approved by the public defender and it can take 2 days or so to even file it, so they usually decide not to. But you do have the right to contest the hold. I know it’s scary to go into the hospital, but just know that if you are placed there it is done with your best interest in mind. As a professional, I know that I only place my clients on holds when I worry for their safety. I feel that it is my job to keep them safe, and if that means I have to place them in the hospital I will. It is not something that should be taken lightly, but if you feel you may harm yourself or someone else, please take yourself to the hospital or call 911. S-CAR Dissertation Defense: Joseph Obeng-Baah- Social Conflict in a Mining Project Community
Unearthing the Undercurrents of Social Conflict in a Multinational Mining Project Community in the Eastern Region of Ghana Dissertation Defense by Joseph Obeng-Baah April 11, 2018 Committee Dr. Susan F. Hirsch - Chair Dr. Agnieszka Paczynska - Member Dr. Franklin Dukes Abstract This dissertation research explores the intersection between the discursive resources that are employed by both multinational mining entities and the communities affected by their activities and the nurturing of the social conflicts that often characterize the lifecycle of mine projects even after compensation and other agreements have been negotiated and delivered. While the research on the phenomenon of mining conflicts has generally focused on the examination of the proximate and often tangible issues associated with mining activities such as the environmental, economic and social impacts on the affected communities, this dissertation explores how the discursive and interpretive meaning making practices around these impacts themselves shape conflict. Using an interdisciplinary analytical approach, the study explores how the discursive positioning and symbolic meaning making processes around these issues serve as critical drivers which, in significant ways, shape both the emergence and perpetuation of the conflict between a large multinational mining company and two communities affected by its activities in a major gold mining project in the West African country of Ghana. From the perspective of constructivist epistemology, the study specifically examines how the mine’s impact is discursively constructed and interpreted by the affected communities and the mining company through the processes of ascription, contestation, and renegotiation of rights and duties to self and others in their day-to-day talk and how these discursive interpretive practices, in turn, serve as drivers of conflict. http://scar.gmu.edu

But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? Well that was hers She said it was just some hoax that she made up To watch people cry Yeah she whispered to me softly Well do you want me? Just how I am? Do you need me? Where I stand Let's go steady Let's make a plan Marinade on that for a while Yeah She wanted to die by a river She wanted the tide to come up and drag her away So that when she's dreamin' She can watch the tree line fall away She used to draw rainbow faces in the sand But the rainbow made the face sad Had bits of foam coming out the bottom of its mouth It's kinda funny that way Oh do you want me? How I am? Do you need me? Oh where I stand Let's go steady Let's make a plan Marinade on that for a little while Yeah

Symposium of Architectural History The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture
This symposium examines the racial discourses that subtended "American Architecture" movements during the long nineteenth century. Explore this site to learn more about the specific themes, case studies and speakers that will be featured at this event. "The Whiteness of American Architecture" is organized by Charles Davis II, UB assistant professor of architecture. About the symposium “The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture” is a one-day symposium in architectural history organized by the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo. This symposium is an outgrowth of the Race + Modern Architecture Project, an interdisciplinary workshop on the racial discourses of western architectural history from the Enlightenment to the present. Participants - Professor Mabel O. Wilson, Columbia GSAPP - Dianne Harris, senior program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation - Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, architectural historian - Kathryn ‘Kate’ Holliday, architectural historian - Charles Davis, assistant professor of architectural history and criticism at the University at Buffalo Race + Modern Architecture Project Race + Modern Architecture logo The “Whiteness & American Architecture” symposium continues the research that began with the Race + Modern Architecture Project, a workshop conducted at Columbia University in 2013. The forthcoming co-edited volume, Race and Modern Architecture presents a collection of seventeen groundbreaking essays by distinguished scholars writing on the critical role of racial theory in shaping architectural discourse, from the Enlightenment to the present. The book, which grows out of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, multi-year research project, redresses longstanding neglect of racial discourses among architectural scholars. With individual essays exploring topics ranging from the role of race in eighteenth-century, Anglo-American neoclassical architecture, to 1970s radical design, the book reveals how the racial has been deployed to organize and conceptualize the spaces of modernity, from the individual building to the city to the nation to the planet. Sponsors - Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture - Columbia University - Darwin D. Martin House Complex - Buffalo, NY - School of Architecture - Victoria University of Wellington - UB Humanities Institute - University at Buffalo, SUNY - School of Architecture and Planning - University at Buffalo, SUNY Purpose and Themes Our symposium will outline a critical history of the white cultural nationalisms that have proliferated under the rubric of "American Architecture" during the long nineteenth century. This theme will be explored chronologically from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century and regionally from representative avant-garde movements on the East Coast to the regionalist architectural styles of the Midwest and West Coast. Such movements included the neoclassical revivals of the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the Chicago School of Architecture and the Prairie Style, the East Bay Style on the West Coast, the Arts & Crafts movement across the continent, and various interwar movements that claimed to find unique historical origins for an autochthonous American style of building. The five architectural historians in attendance have been charged with providing some preliminary answers to the central question of these proceedings: What definitions of American identity have historically influenced the most celebrated national architectural movements of the long nineteenth century, and how was this influence been manifested in the labor relations, ideological commitments and material dimensions of innovative architectural forms?
