Helium-3 is a very rare gas with the potential to fuel clean nuclear fusion power plants. However, one of the problems is that the nearest supply of helium-3 is on the Moon. This video by Christopher Barnatt discusses the nuclear physics, space exploration and global politics that may be involved in mining the Moon for helium-3. You can watch my updated "Mining the Moon" video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9EMcyfGMDA More information can be found in the "Helium-3 Power Fact File" on ExplainingTheFuture.com All visuals were produced for this video using LightWave and After Effects.

Mining the Moon for Helium-3 Aneutronic Fusion Energy

06:27
An educational movie from the early 90's explaining how lunar mining of the Helium-3 isotope (along with water and other gases) from lunar regolith could be accomplished. Helium-3 is a fuel source for an aneutronic fusion reaction with deuterium, which releases no harmful neutrons decreasing the hazard of nuclear fusion considerably. Deuterium is common on the earth, (158 ppm in seawater), however Helium-3 is scarce on the Earth and can only be made by nuclear fission in small amounts. 4 Billion years of solar wind bombardment has left lunar soil one of the richest sources in the solar system of Helium-3, although the gas giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn are richer, having absorbed more Helium-3 from the nebula that formed the solar system. Titanium dioxide, TiO2, is one of the key components of lunar soil and rock, has the largest capture cross-section for helium-3 and can trap and contain the gas for billions of years, allowing it to build up in high concentrations. High resolution mapping of TiO2 abundances on the Moon, which was done using the Hubble Space Telescope in 2007, may be an important tool for locating ideal mining sites. Moreover, the far, or "dark", side of the moon is particularly rich in Helium-3 as this side of the moon always faces away from the earth meaning that it has had a steady buildup of the stable He-3 isotope for 4 billion years. The near side also has significant quantities, however it is decreased as the earth's magnetic field and the earth itself would have decreased the particle flux from the sun reaching the moon. Hence, people who appreciate the moon for its natural beauty need not panic as it may be convenient to mine the far side of the moon if we chose to mine it at all, leaving the natural beauty of the near side alone. As we never see the far side, it will be unnoticeable from the earth that we are mining the moon at all as will not have to make track lines over any any natural features of the moon as seen from earth. Even so it would take thousands of years to make any significant changes to the moon. Craters could even be swept of external regolith and smoothed to make giant radio telescopes, as the Earth's radio noise and atmosphere make certain radio frequencies inaccessible from earth-based observatories but this would not be a problem on the far side of the moon. Optical observatories could also be built on the moon to sizes and resolutions impossible to achieve on earth and even on earth orbit, as the low gravity, lack of atmosphere and lack of glare from light reflected off the earth itself would mean giant, stable mirrors could be built and observe a truly dark and clear sky. Moreover the deepest craters are found on the far side of the moon. Since water can only be found in significant quantities on the moon in deep craters where it can remain semi stable inside of rocks most of the water may be on the far side of the moon, or at least at the poles, embedded in the lunar soil in such craters. Therefore the economic and scientific centers of the moon may be on the side which never faces the earth! Earth's supplies of Helium-3, a substance with a net worth of $3 Billion per metric ton (over 80 times more valuable than gold) are dwindling rapidly, with sources now 6 times less than in the 1980's. Lunar soil has rich deposits of Helium-3, which would not only pay for the trip expenses but would also allow the nation(s) that go for it to dominate the Moon and make series headway to Mars, having a lower gravity to launch from. NASA should be seriously considering lunar mining as Helium-3 can not only be used in advanced physics experiments, such as neutron spin polarization spectroscopy for characterizing new materials such as superconductors but can also be used in MRI scans for observing lung cancer and most importantly generating a clean form of nuclear fusion, known as aneutronic fusion. Helium-3 can be created on the earth as a decay product of Hydrogen-3 (Tritium) or when Lithium is bombarded with neutrons under certain cross-sections. At a price of 3 billion US dollars per tonne, mining the moon for this resource is highly economical. About 20 tonnes of helium-3, which would fill a single oil truck, would power the US for a whole year. Aside from a fuel source for fusion, Helium-3 is also used in neutron spin polarization spectroscopy which measures the magnetic properties of nanomaterials, such as superconductors. This is due to unique spin-dependent absorption cross-section of Helium-3. The isotope is also used in cryogenics to achieve nanokelvin temperatures in dilution refrigerators making it an crucial material for science and industry. Helium-3 reserves are critically low worldwide and unless there are efforts by the nuclear industry on earth to replenish them by producing more tritium then the moon seems to be the best option economically to harvest this precious resource.

GIANT MOON MINING MACHINE ? Lunar Base Structures 2. Apollo 8 UFO ? ArtAlienTV

25:41
ArtAlienTV - " What looks like a huge machine on the Moon or could it be a crashed space ship/shuttle UFO? It has a debris field behind it and a possible mound in front of it. Could it be mining the surface material for helium 3 or is it a crashed ship from thousands of years ago? As it is on an upward slope I would suggest a mining machine as a crashed ship would unlikely slide up the edge of a crater in such a way. But I now think it could be a hovercraft and the low gravity could explain it's position. There are many more intelligent structures in this Apollo 8 image but most are too far away to see clearly. I may come back to them later if I can find some closer shots of them. Watch this space. An open mind is required when viewing images from other planets. One day our very survival may depend on it ". See you soon for another game of Interplanetary I spy". **************************** The Apollo Moon Conspiracy The reason why some people think that the Apollo 11 moon landings were faked is that many of the images were doctored. Radio transmissions were also switched to keep the Moon UFO's that followed the Apollo missions to the surface and the intelligent structures that were found there a secret. These UFO's go some way to explain some of the strange lighting effects that people point out in many of the Apollo pictures. You can clearly see them in some of these NASA photos. Some of the astronauts have recently testified on film about these UFO's and structures. The conspiracy that states that the Moon landings were faked was started by NASA according to Richard C Hoagland. Memos were handed to the press in the early 1970's to start the ball rolling. The perfect cover for the secret space program. Distracting any potential moon landing skeptics. The spawning of this huge home made conspiracy was a total distraction. Then for decades people were all arguing about whether they even went to he moon instead of keeping an eye on them. Clever. So it was all a huge psy ops gig to confuse and disrupt any potential trouble makers. MoonFaker: Moon Rocks Revisited. Episode 5, Helium-3 & Fusion Crust. PART 2

12:00
Once again it seems the full title won't fit. It's "MoonFaker: Helium-3, Fusion Crust, The Oldest Rocks & Exposure Ages". As the title suggests, these are the issues we'll be addressing. The hype over the amount of helium-3 found in the Apollo samples originated from Jay Windley's website. His claims along these lines were thoroughly and swiftly debunked in MoonFaker Exhibit D. Windley claimed that chipping away the fusion crust of meteorites would remove the helium-3 -- a solar wind induced isotope -- and that there is not enough of the said isotope available on earth to apply to these fake samples. I pointed out that there is still plenty of helium-3 beneath the fusion crusts and more than enough available on earth to apply to fake moon rocks. But it seems the more desperate propagandists just don't get the message. Phil Webb goes for volume to falsely accuse me of logical fallacies and flog as many of Windley's debunked claims as possible, and ironically enough once again we can use some of his own sources against his claims. But Webb also peppers in some new nonsense: like his claim that chipping away the fusion crust would leave traces of the tools used in the samples as well as their markings. This is a red herring. As anyone with a basic understanding of lunar processing should know, the JSC curators usually send out tiny sugar-cube sized samples that were literally chipped off from larger specimens. So traces of the tools would be present in the samples regardless. In Exhibit D I also played a clip from the BBC series, The Planets, which stated that the Genesis rock was as old as the earth a fact we would never have known without terrestrial rocks of similar age. It has become obvious that one of the reasons Webb skipped over much of my BBC source was so he could falsely accuse me of avoiding mention of the age of the Apollo rocks.

NASA Wants To Mine Water From The Moon

01:11
Our moon has a lot of frozen water ice, and NASA scientists are trying to figure out how to mine it for use on spacecraft missions. There are two projects with different concepts about how to find and use the water resources that are on the moon. Various lunar missions have pointed to the presence of water ice on our moon, and now NASA scientists want to learn more about its quantity and composition with an eye on mining it for future spacecraft missions. There are two projects with different concepts about how to find and use the water resources that are on the moon. One is called Lunar Flashlight, and the other is the Resource Prospector Mission. They are scheduled to launch at the end of 2017 and during 2018 respectively. The Lunar Flashlight will orbit the moon nearly eighty times at a low orbit while measuring and mapping water ice resources at the surface that could one day be mined by astronauts or robots. Lunar Flashlight principal investigator Barbara Cohen, of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama is quoted as saying: “If you're going to have humans on the moon and you need water for drinking, breathing, rocket fuel, anything you want, it's much, much cheaper to live off the land than it is to bring everything with you.” The Resource Prospector Mission is a rover that will scour the surface of the moon to find sources of frozen water in the soil. Samples will be collected and heated up to see if there is any water for analysis.

NASA mining the moon: space agency now accepting applications

00:21
NASA is now accepting applications from private companies that want to mine the moon for valuable resources such as helium 3 and rare earth minerals, which are worth some considerable cheese to the commodities market back on earth. According to reports, interested companies must submit initial proposals to the Lunar Cargo Transportation and Landing by Soft Touchdown program by February 10. NASA will then award a contract to build robot miners, which is the first step toward mining the moon. NASA will not be funding the mining effort. Instead, it will provide support. Final proposals are due on March 17. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. RESTRICTIONS: NONE For story suggestions please contact [email protected] The United States government has granted a Mountain View, California-based company permission to launch a mission to the moon, the first time the government has allowed a company to conduct a commercial space mission beyond Earth’s orbit. Moon Express’ The MX-1 is about the size of a coffee table. It will be launched sometime in 2017 on an Electron rocket, a rocket currently being built by startup Rocket Lab. The MX-1 will carry a scientific and commercial payload that includes cremated human remains. It will also transmit pictures and videos of the moon back to Earth. The spacecraft is solar-powered and uses hydrogen peroxide as rocket fuel. Its missions include mining for resources such as water and Helium-3. It can also serve as a refueling station for other satellites. At the moment, commercial satellites have only gone as far as the geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles above Earth. Only three nation states -- the United States, the former Soviet Union and China -- have landed on the moon. However, the permission granted to Moon Express does not guarantee access for other private companies to the moon. India to Mine the Moon for H-3

05:49
India has made plans to mine Helium-3 from the moon for their new hypersonic aircraft that can fly at 15K miles per hour, or 25 times the speed of sound. India and China have both already outlined a plan for acquiring the potentially huge commodity. We look at the value of this powerful new fuel source and the implications for nuclear fusion technology, in this Lip News clip with Gabriel Mizrahi and Lissette Padilla. www.thelip.tv Newest Lip News playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkLtTaPWsh0&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGcjJDo6cQBCQprDMQyUQY3r BUZZSAW interview clips - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnaGGDt_CQ8&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGeWhHPas6M9sKUhThquDNOc CRIME TIME clips playlist - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BUihCjuHyE&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGeC9DbpSnIvd2i9BHh2dBvv BYOD (Bring Your Own Doc) Highlight Videos- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvlKnlh4jyI&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGeu2DCf6Ouo7hTsA5QB2MAL MEDIA MAYHEM short videos playlist - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZhANIybNP8&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGcz4un-zws5sMlCLk3NNjDP https://www.facebook.com/thelip.tv http://www.youtube.com/theliptv

For explaining our Future energy resource, this short film came infront of you -------LHeX--------- Gas prices are rising and the cost of heating your home continues to increase. Today, we are in an age of questioning. Our resources are declining and causing the prices of comforts to rise beyond acceptable rates. Is this something that can be avoided? In effect we are paying more now to continue heating and fueling our possession while still polluting the earth. The process of obtaining the material necessary for heating and fueling destroys the ecosystem and affects jobs and health. Yet since early in the last decade, scientists have known of other alternatives to the destructive ones used now. We use these alternatives in remote locations on a very low scale. Have we become so addicted to fossil fuels that funding and research, in a proactive sense, cannot be enacted for the betterment of our society? NASA has recently announced that its current mission statement is to build a permanent base on the moon. A potential gas source, called Helium 3, found on the moon's surface could hold the key to meeting and exceeding future energy demands as the earth's fossil fuels head towards a state of non-existence. Helium-3 is deposited on the lunar surface by solar winds and would have to be extracted from moon soil and rocks. Twenty-Five tons of Helium 3, is enough to provide electricity for the US for one full year. Scientists further state that the moon contains ten times more energy in the form of Helium 3 than all the fossil fuels on earth. Helium-3 (He3) is gas that has the potential to be used as a fuel in future nuclear fusion power plants. There is very little helium-3 available on the Earth. However, there are thought to be significant supplies on the Moon. Several governments have subsequently signalled their intention to go to the Moon to mine helium-3 as a fuel supply. Such plans may come to fruition within the next two to three decades and trigger a new Space Race. Little bit Deep : Helium-3 is, emitted by the Sun within its solar winds. Our atmosphere prevents any of this helium-3 arriving on the Earth. However, as it does not have an atmosphere, there is nothing to stop helium-3 arriving on the surface of the Moon and being absorbed by the lunar soil. As a result, it has been estimated that there are around 1,100,000 metric tonnes of helium-3 on the surface of the Moon down to a depth of a few metres. This helium-3 could potentially be extracted by heating the lunar dust to around 600 degrees C, before bringing it back to the Earth to fuel a new generation of nuclear fusion power plants.

NASA Is Now Accepting Applications From Companies That Want To Mine The Moon

00:46
NASA is now working with private companies to take the first steps in exploring the moon for valuable resources like helium 3 and rare earth metals. Initial proposals are due tomorrow for the Lunar Cargo Transportation and Landing by Soft Touchdown program (CATALYST). One or more private companies will win a contract to build prospecting robots, the first step toward mining the moon. The contract will be a "no funds exchanged" Space Agreement Act, which means the government will not be directly funding the effort, but will receive NASA support. http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/9/5395684/nasa-begins-hunt-for-private-companies-to-mine-the-moon-catalyst http://www.wochit.com
