Abandoned. What makes people leave a town and not even bring their belongings with them? Leave a town to rot. This, everyone, is the story of a Ghost town. Not just any ghost town, but the biggest, most sprawling, massive ghost town in California. The one with the bad reputation. The one that once, reportedly, inspired a little girl to write in her diary, "Goodbye God, we're going to Bodie" Come with me, Justin Scarred, on a trip through time and a lot of miles of dirt road as we explore California's biggest ghost town, Bodie! Entire ghost town in California

An empty town in California complete with a school, church, firehouse, stores, even a morgue! Traveling through California I stopped off at the incredible Redwoods! So amazing to see these giants in person. From there I went on to explore Bodie, an incredibly preserved town in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Bodie was a thriving mining town way back in the 1800's but as time went on it became less and less populated until the 1940's when it was all but abandoned. It was eventually taken over by the state, protected and preserved. Such a cool experience to walk around this place. What a time warp! Calico Ghost Town - California, USA

09:38
Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 during the largest silver strike in California. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the mid-1890's, Calico lost its population. The miner's packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost town." Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950's architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880's. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town. Today Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system visited by people from around the country and all over the world. The park offers visitors an opportunity to share in its rich history and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding desert environment. Along with its history and attractions, Calico Ghost Town has shops, restaurants and offers camping and outdoor recreation not available at most of our other park facilities. Due to the historic nature of the town, not all areas are ADA accessible. CAUTION: Mines in the Calico area are extremely hazardous and must not be approached for any reason! Soundtrack.. 2018 GHOST Town Update: Desert Center, CA

07:39
On our way back from the Salton Sea we stopped by Desert Center, California for an update. We were exploring the ghost town when the owner stopped by..."Desert Dave" gave us permission to walk thru the abandoned Desert Center School. The town was founded in 1921 by Stephen A. Ragsdale, also known as "Desert Steve", and his wife, Lydia. Ragsdale was an itinerant preacher and cotton farmer, originally from Arkansas. In 1915, he left his farm in the Palo Verde Valley along the Colorado River to attend to some business in Los Angeles. The road between Phoenix and Los Angeles was mostly sand, and Ragsdale's vehicle broke down near a place called Gruendyke's Well. This featured a hand-dug well and was inhabited by a prospector named Bill Gruendyke. Gruendyke rescued Ragsdale and gave him food, shelter, and water until his vehicle was repaired and he could resume his journey to Los Angeles. He later moved back to Desert Center with his family to start a service station. Help support our channel, BUY A MUG! https://goo.gl/Jx8zXC #LiLV - Living in Las Vegas Youtube channel 2018

10 Real Haunted Ghost Towns to See in America!

03:08
Want to visit a REAL ghost town? Spooky abandoned post-apocalyptic villages aren’t just the stuff of movies - there are plenty right here in America, and some are said to be haunted! 1. Bodie, California This National Historic Landmark is a perfectly preserved example of the late nineteenth century gold mining towns of California. Rumor has it, any visitor who tries to sneak off with an artifact from this ghost town will be cursed with bad luck! 2. St. Elmo, Colorado St. Elmo was a lively mining center with a booming population of 2000 until the local railroad closed down. Apparently, the ghost of former resident Annabelle Stark keeps watch over the town. 3. Centralia, Pennsylvania Centralia is home to 10 stubborn people who refuse to move and was the main inspiration for the horror movie Silent Hill. A mine fire which has been burning under the town since 1962 has caused most residents to leave over the years. 4. Bannack, Montana With a thriving population of 10,000 it was nicknamed the New Eldorado by the hopeful prospectors. It also once had an outlaw gang leader as its sheriff. Each July, there’s a re-enactment festival celebrating the town’s former glory. 5. Cahawba, Alabama Cahawba was once the capital of Alabama but today is an archeological park open to visitors. You can wander around and view the many abandoned streets and ruins of this formerly important governmental center. 6. Rhyolite, Nevada First established as a mining camp near Death Valley in 1905, Rhyolite saw its peak during the American gold rush. It’s a great testament of the boom and bust cycle of this era. 7. Terlingua, Texas Once a district of mining villages, today a ghost town, reduced to several closed mines and many abandoned industrial facilities, businesses and homes. However there’s still a working saloon for those seeking the authentic Old West experience. 8. Oatman, Arizona Located in the Black Mountains it became famous when 10 million dollars worth of gold was discovered in the area. Wild burros now roam the streets and gunfights are staged on the weekends. 9. Glenrio, Texas Formerly known as Rock Island it was a railway town which fell into disuse when Interstate 40 bypassed the community in 1973. Visit the Phillips 66 Service Station and other once-busy buildings that are now ghosts of their former glory. 10. Kennecott, Alaska One of the most remote ghost towns in America, is an old copper mining town. Virtually abandoned since the Depression in the 1930’s, it now has guided tours allowing visitors to explore the abandoned buildings frozen in time… What’s the spookiest place you’ve visited? The Abandoned Mines and Buildings in the Ghost Town of Atolia, CA

05:17
Yesterday we found ourselves wandering around the ghost town of Atolia checking out the many abandoned mine shafts and old buildings that are there. In its heyday, Atolia had a population of 2000 people and had grocery stores, hotels, saloons, and other businesses. A rail line was built to service the town, too. Now all of that is gone. Vanished. Dried up. We wandered the dusty streets of Atolia, looked down many of the vertical mine shafts, and explored many of the remaining buildings. What once was a busy, bustling place full of excitement is now marked by a sense of loneliness and sad silence that is often broken by the sound of the hot, dry, desert wind blowing through what once was Atolia. #ExploringAbandonedMines #AbandonedMines #MineExploring #UndergroundExploration #Atolia #Randsburg
The Mayor of a Ghost Town (Population: 1)

05:44
Welcome to Ballarat, California, population one. Located in the heart of the unforgiving Death Valley, the former mining supply town has been abandoned for nearly 100 years. Were it not for Rock Novak, the town’s only resident, Ballarat would belong to the vultures. “I’m the caretaker, the mayor, the sheriff, the judge, and the undertaker [of Ballarat],” Novak says in Mickey Todiwala and Monika Delgado’s short documentary, The Mayor of Ballarat. “I like it out here. It’s peaceful, quiet…you do as you want.” Read more: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/564557/ballarat/ "The Mayor of Ballarat" was directed by Mickey Todiwala and Monika Delgado. GOING ALONE - Amboy California Mojave Desert ghost town cemetery

12:12
Come walk with me through a California desert ghost town cemetery. The community of Amboy is located along historic Route 66 between Barstow and Needles. At one time this community supported the area railroad and mining industries as well as providing amenities to travelers along America's Mother Road. The town is now nearly deserted, with many empty buildings and only a few remaining residents. The cemetery is nearly forgotten, and rarely visited, though it is only a short walk from the center of the little town. When visiting, be sure to note the deserted church with adjacent rectory, as well as the empty school which is across the street. ----- My name is Kurt Bell and I am delighted that you have taken some time to share a little of The Good Life with me. Calico Ghost Town | Abandoned Silver Mining Town | California | USA

Calico is a ghost town and former mining town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert region of Southern California, it was founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, and today has been converted into a county park named Calico Ghost Town. Located off Interstate 15, it lies 3 miles (4.8 km) from Barstow and 3 miles from Yermo. Giant letters spelling CALICO can be seen on the Calico Peaks behind the ghost town from the freeway. Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950s, architecturally restoring all but the five remaining original buildings to look as they did in the 1880s. Ghost Towns: Abandoned But Not Forgotten

03:35
These towns, often far off the beaten path and rooted in the mining industry, couldn't survive when the gold, silver, copper, and coal were gone. Check out the stories behind these boom-towns. For more stories --- http://allday.com/ Follow our twitter accounts --- https://twitter.com/historyinpics Follow our Instagram -- http://instagram.com/historyphotographed -- http://instagram.com/itsabandoned 1. Goldfield, Arizona Goldfield, Arizona, as the name suggests, was a gold town that thrived in the 1890s, but was abandoned by the late 1920s. Today, Goldfield has been reconstructed as a tourist stop, with a focus on kitsch rather than historical accuracy. Rhyolite, Nevada Rhyolite, Nevada was named for silica-rich volcanic rock in its corner of Death Valley, and saw significant investment from Charles M. Schwab in the early 20th century. By 1907, the town even had its own stock exchange, but its population dwindled in the years afterward. Terlingua, Texas Terlingua, Texas was built up around mercury mining in the mid-1880s, but was abandoned in the 1940s when production dwindled. Today, Terlingua is mostly a tourist destination for visitors to nearby Big Bend National Park. Bodie, California The town of Bodie, California was founded in 1859 and was once California's third-largest city behind San Francisco and Sacramento. The town closed in 1962 after the local gold mine stopped producing and has since become a attraction for tourists. Thurmond, West Virginia During the heyday of coal mining in West Virginia, Thurmond was a prosperous town, but its population dwindled into the single digits by the 2000s. Today, much of Thurmond is owned by the U.S. National Park Service. Calico, California Calico, California was a booming silver-mining town during the 1880s, but was totally abandoned by 1907. Calico underwent extensive restoration in the 1950s under the direction of Walter Knott, of Knott’s Berry Farm fame, and became a tourist attraction for the state. Thistle, Utah The primary industry was servicing steam trains for rail companies, and saw a decline during the switch-over to diesel engines. The real incident that killed the town, however, was a 1983 landslide that flooded the city. Much of it remains submerged today. Virginia City, Montana Virginia City, Montana was founded on gold mining in 1863, but the gold ran out by the end of the century and the town was abandoned. Today Virginia City is owned by the state of Montana, and serves as a tourist stop for travelers headed for Yellowstone National Park. Kennecott, Alaska The copper mine in Alaska produced $200 million worth of copper ore between 1911 and 1938, but was too remote to survive when the mine ran dry in the early 40s. Kennecott became a tourist landmark by the 1980s, and was designated a historic landmark. Written By: Shea Huffman Edited By: Charlie Benavides Image Credit: Getty Images Music: YouTube Music Library

Ghost Towns of the American Gold Rush - 4576

54:12
#ghosttowns #goldrush #gold The wildest and fastest American era that ever was... Men left their homes, wives, children, and their jobs, and raced West in a mad rush to find a pot-of-gold at the end of the rainbow. Towns sprang up overnight, along with banks, general stores, boarding houses, saloons, all of which were filled with prospectors, hustlers, gamblers, and outlaws. Some came to mine gold. Others came to mine the miners. Men and women lived fast, full, often reckless lives, and when rumors of new strikes arose, many picked up their stakes and moved on with the possibility of a better tomorrow someplace else. Left behind in their wake were empty buildings and silent streets. This documentary brings to life eleven ghost towns. Some are completely deserted, while others are actually still alive, though, they are operating as unique places that people can visit and witness what a ghost town was like back in the 19th century. It is all here; a collection of anecdotes and history of America's past, gone but never forgotten. A few towns even allow visitors to pan for gold! Included Are: Coloma, CA Grass Valley, CA Murphys, CA Virginia City, NV Sutro, NV Bodie, CA Buckskin Joe, CO Lake City, CO Bannack, MT Vulture City, AZ Mogollon, NM

Vintage Photos help tell the story of this abandoned silver mining town, which was then restored and turned into a theme park like attraction, and later handed over to the county of San Bernardino. See what the town was like in the days when Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm owned it and was building it up, and see how it compares to what's here now! Tumco Historic Townsite - Abandoned Gold Mining Town in California

08:40
Driving back from doing errands in Blythe, California, I spotted a sign for Tumco Historic Townsite. Tumco, previously known as Hedges, was a small gold mining town at the edge of the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. The town was abandoned in 1905, resurrected in 1910, and then abandoned again some years later. Today there are only ruins to reveal the history of this old mining town. Thanks for watching! S3 E4: Ghost Towns

Some California dreams succeeded, creating megalopolis regions in the state’s north and south. Other dreams failed, leaving nothing but ruins. This episode explores three California ghost towns: Bodie, a Mono County gold mining settlement that was preserved in time; Llano Del Rio, a socialist utopian community in the Mojave Desert; and Zzyzx, a former health spa on the way to Las Vegas.

Randsburg - California Ghost Towns

03:47
California Travel Tips host Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) heads into the Mojave Desert to check out Randsburg Ghost Town. Located in Kern County along scenic Highway 395, Randsburg is one of California's few "living" ghost towns, home to approximately 80 residents. The Rand Mining District was established in 1895, when gold was discovered in the Rand mountains. It's estimated that Randsburg produced more than $60 million in gold during its boom. There also was plenty of tungsten ore and silver. One of the most productive gold mines was the Yellow Aster, which yielded $25 million between 1895 and 1933. Be sure to check out the Randsburg Jail, located at the entrance to town, then head inside the Rand Desert Museum, where you'll find mining exhibits, memorabilia and artifacts from the Rand Mining District. Be sure to say hi to curator J. Bart Parker, and tell him we said hello! Most of Randsburg's surviving Old West buildings are located along Butte Avenue. The Santa Barbara Catholic Church dates back to 1904, but the first church was built here in 1897. The Randsburg Post Office dates back to 1896. On holidays, local thespians don period costumes for plays and melodramas at the Randsburg Opera House. The Randsburg General Store is the hub of action in Randsburg, especially during the fall when the weather cools off and ATV riders arrive. You have to order the Black Bart. It's a signature item here! Built in 1896 as the Jones Drug Store, this popular hangout is a huge draw for tourists who fuel up on burgers and sandwiches, washed down with a phosphate soda. The building still has its original tin ceilings, light fixtures and soda fountain dating back to 1904. For a bit of wild west nostalgia, head into the White House Saloon, which hosted miners, cowboys, Indians and clampers during the boom years; or check out The Joint, a local watering hole that's been here since the 1950s. If you want to stay the night, Goat's Sky Ranch is a B&B with miner's cabin rentals, or you can check into the Randsburg Inn , which sits on the former site of the Orpheum Theater, My Place Dance Hall and Commercial Hotel. One thing to consider — Randsburg literally becomes a ghost town during the week. The best time to visit is on the weekend, when most businesses are operating. Thanks for joining us in Randsburg. Julian - San Diego Attractions - California Ghost Towns

02:15
California Travel Expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com and the California Essential Guide (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id428163062?mt=8) app visits Julian California in this episode of "California Travel Tips." This charming little ghost town — located an hour from San Diego — comes alive during the fall, when it celebrates the famous Julian apple harvest. Bring along a light jacket as you explore the town's quaint stores, restaurants and delicious homemade apple pies. Julian's mining history dates back to 1869, when San Diego experienced its first (and only) Gold Rush. Today, Main Street is filled with dozens of fun shops and attractions. You can hitch a ride on a horse and buggy, do a bit of wine tasting, or get a Western-style portrait taken at Grandpa's Old Time Photo. To learn more about Julian's mining history, join a tour at Eagle and High Peak Mine, located at the end of C Street. Train rides are available on the Smith Ranch and Julian Railroad by appointment. Kids will enjoy panning for gold at the Julian Mining Company, or getting an old-fashioned phosphate at the Miner's Diner soda fountain. But the real draw in Julian is the apple pie, and visitors are fiercely divided on who makes the best. I'm partial to Julian Pie Company, a cozy little diner with a loyal following. Be sure to get here early, as lines quickly form out the door. Once you've had your fill of pie, walk off the calories with a tour of Julian's pioneer cemetery and historic Gold Rush buildings. The Jacoby Building, built in 1897, was the town's original general store. The Wilcox Building, which dates back to 1872, once served as a stage coach stop and Julian's post office. If you want to spend the night, consider staying in the Julian hotels. The Julian Gold Rush Hotel, which was built in 1897, is one of California's best B&Bs, and well worth a visit. Calico Ghost Town - Mojave Desert

03:25
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares a guide to Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located in the dusty Mojave Desert — roughly 10 miles north of Barstow — Calico was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. Home to 1,200 residents by 1887, this was a wild and woolly place — with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. Today, Calico has five surviving original buildings: the Park Office, Lane's General Store, Lil's Saloon, and The Zenda Mining Company. Plan on a full day to explore. You can do a bit of gold panning; walk sideways in the Mystery Shack; take a ride on the Calico & Odessa Narrow Gauge Railway; or explore more than 1,000 feet of tunnel inside the Maggie Mine Shaft. Around lunch, grab a cold beer and burger at Old Miner's Cafe, or enjoy an old-fashioned sarsparilla at the Calico House Restaurant. Then, hike off your meal on the East Calico Hiking Trail, where you'll find unique cabins carved into the rocky hillsides. Calico produced more than $20 million in silver, and was deserted by the 1930s. Walter Knott (of Knott's Berry Farm fame) purchased the crumbling town in 1951 for $13,500, restoring it to its former glory. It is now run by the park service. Tips: Calico takes credit cards and there are several ATMs on site. You can stay the night in Calico's campgrounds or bunkhouse. The ghost town is located off I-15 en route to Las Vegas. City Of Gold Mine, Bodie Ghost Town

City Of Gold Mine, Bodie Ghost Town. Bodie Ghost Town State Historic Park is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of nearly 10,000 people. The town is named for Waterman S. Body (William Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake. In 1875, a mine cave-in revealed pay dirt, which led to purchase of the mine by the Standard Company in 1877. People flocked to Bodie and transformed it from a town of a few dozen to a boomtown. #BodieGhostTown #GhostTown #goldmine #oldtown #nationalhistory

The Ghost Town of Masonic, Mono County, California

20:47
Although gold was discovered here in 1860, it was not until about 1900 that Joseph Green staked the rich Jump Up Joe Mine. On the fourth of July, 1902 J.S. Phillips of Pittsburgh, with partners J.M. Brian and Caleb Dorsey made an exciting find and called it the Pittsburgh-Liberty to honor a birthplace and a date. Fraternal background determined the name to be attached to this camp, which eventually evolved into three sections known as Lower, Middle, and Upper Town. By 1908, Masonic promised to be one of the major mining camps of the west, but the yellow metal followed no pattern. Rich pockets were found and exhausted; then Phillips' broken body was found at the bottom of a shaft. Was it a slip, or was it treachery afoot that night? The ghosts of Masonic have many secrets.
