A very interesting video (with many rare and unusual shots) presentation Belaz (Белаз) plants and their latest and greatest products ( video done by LBL PRODUCTION ) The latest : model 75603 (400 short ton* payload) and 75710 (almost 500 sht* payload),which is now biggest ,heaviest and with highest capacity/payload haul truck (rigid dump truck/mining truck) in the world. Belaz 75710 after 40 years broke the length record GM-Terex Titan 33-19 haul truck (350 sht payload) of a half meter .Belaz=20.6m ,Titan= 20.1m (without extending the towing eye). Belaz has an outstanding front width= 10.2m (9.9m at rear).For example CAT 797F = only 8.5m front and 9.5m at rear axle. Shallow bucket body is typical for body with large surface=most of the load is above. See similar body with big surface in Titan Terex, Wabco 3200 and VCON 3006. The Kato excavator: an overview by Richard Campbell Well known for the quality of its mobile cranes, Kato, of Japan, was also a pioneer in the field of hydraulic excavators, and the second Japanese manufacturer to export them commercially. A little bit of pre-history. For whatever reason, New Zealand was unusually slow in converting from cable to hydraulic excavators. In actual fact, hydraulic excavators had been around since the 1950s when Demag, Koehring and Liebherr introduced their first machines to the construction marketplace. Hydraulic excavators began to appear here in small quantities from the mid 1960s and the majority of these came from the UK in the form of Hy-Mac, Priestman, JCB and Massey-Fergusson. There was also a smattering of machines from Europe including Poclain and Yumbo. Hy-Mac was the first to really market the hydraulic concept in New Zealand staging demonstrations around the country, impressing contractors with their ease and flexibility of operation compared to the cable-operated types. But all of these early machines had their drawbacks, the most obvious being that they were basically all “mobile oil leaks” due to limitations in high pressure sealing technology and hydraulic hose manufacture which had not yet caught up with the times. The first Asian designed and manufactured machines to reach New Zealand were built by Hitachi and began to appear in New Zealand in late 1966. At the time, there was a certain stigma to any goods “made in Japan” inferring that they were of sub-standard or poor quality. In Hitachi’s case, this was simply just not true and those New Zealand contractors that bought the first UH03s imported were very pleasantly surprised by the machines’ toughness and reliability. Tucked away on construction sites most people won’t ever see are dump trucks so large it’s hard to believe are real. On this episode we bring you the World’s largest dump truck. The BelAZ 75710 made by Belarusian company BelAZ is the world largest, highest payload capacity haul truck. The truck is built with a conventional two axle setup but has doubled wheels, four to an axle. It has 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel hydraulic steering, which is unusual. The truck is 30 feet or 9 meters tall with wheels taller than most people. The BelAz 75710 is powered by two 2,300 horsepower motors with a top speed of 40 mph or 64 kph. It was designed for work in giant mining operations. The truck itself weighs over 750,000 pounds or 340 000 kg, to put that into perspective the average midsize car weighs 3500 lbs or 1600 kg making this dump truck weigh the equivalent of the combined weight of 215 cars. When it comes to hauling, this beast can carry up to 992,000 pounds or 450000 kg of material. Now I’m sure you’re thinking of picking one up, it’ll cost you around 6 million dollars. The Terex 72-81 loader: an overview by Richard Campbell Euclid had begun preparatory designs on a big wheel loader as far back as 1965. Several experimental machines were built between 1966 and 1967 powered by the naturally aspirated GM 8V-71 and the turbocharged GM 8V-71T but during testing didn’t quite meet up to the expectations of the designers as the machines were either too slow or lacked sufficient power for operating functions. A revision to one of the later designs introduced the turbocharged GM 12V-71 engine into the mix and Euclid suddenly had itself a performer. A small batch of trial machines was constructed to be field tested in various customer applications and GM’s Milford proving ground. These were known by the factory as the Euclid model L-X. Following successful trials, Euclid intended to put the new wheel loader into full production as the model 72-80, but following GM’s renaming of the Euclid earthmoving division to Terex in 1968, the decision was made to keep the designation all in the “1” family and the 72-80 became the 72-81. It was intended for opencast mining, bulk stockpiling and large earthmoving projects. The new 72-81 wheel loader was officially introduced to the public in February 1969. It was faced with some stiff opposition from competitors in the form of the Caterpillar 992, International-Hough H400 and Clark-Michigan 475. Weighing in at around 52 tons, the 72-81 boasted a 438 flywheel horsepower GM12V-71T engine mated to an Allison CRT6033 3-speed transmission and could be outfitted with either a nine or 10 cubic yard bucket.

The Euclid S-12 scraper: an overview by Richard Campbell The 78FOT series Euclid S-12 was a ‘scaled up’ version of the already successful S-7. It was a good seller in the US – quite maneuverable for its size, and came with not only a windshield, but a wiper as well! First introduced in 1955, the S-12 was destined to be the last two-axle Euclid scraper with a direct drive transmission. For reasons known only to Euclid, it was also their only production two-axle scraper never to be offered with a powershift transmission. Bearing a strong family resemblance to other machines in the Euclid scraper range, the S-12 was rated at 12 cubic yards struck and 16 cubic yards heaped. During its production life there were two variations of open bowl scraper manufactured for the S-12 but these were not distinguished by a change in designation. There are certain spotting features which allow one to be discerned from the other and I have presented both in the accompanying photos. Easton Manufacturing made a useful attachment for the machine in the form of the model TS1622, a rear dump wagon. Euclid produced a prototype bottom dump for the S-12 but it was not put into series production. Hancock offered the model 218, a 16 cubic yard elevating scraper to suit the machine. Keeping well within the General Motors family, the S-12 was powered by a GM 6-71 series 6-cylinder inline diesel rated at 218 flywheel horsepower at 2100 rpm. This was attached to a Fuller 5F1220 five-speed manual transmission with one reverse gear, the power being transmitted through a 15.5 inch Lipe-Rollway clutch with air-operated booster. On the standard 26.5 x 25 tyre this gave the S-12 a top speed in the region of 22 miles per hour. Steering was accomplished by the standard Euclid twin double-acting reversible hydraulic cylinder system and made the S-12 quite manoeverable for its size. Air operated cam shoe brakes acting on all four wheels were used for stopping. Operator comforts were few – but in keeping with the time period when the machine was manufactured – and consisted of an air suspension seat and a windshield with wiper! An optional cab was available, as was a heater. There was also a vent by the operator’s right leg which, when opened, allowed warm engine air into the operators area (along with the classic GM engine smell). Configuration of the bowl was the same as for larger Euclid scrapers of the period with two single acting cylinders attached to the bowl’s spreader bar by lever and link for raising and lowering the bowl. The apron was controlled by a solitary single acting cylinder attached to the apron via lever and a length of cable while the ejector employed the usual roll out method via another single acting cylinder attached to a cam lever and roller. And all of this worked very effectively. During its short production life of only seven years, the S-12 was a good seller on the US domestic market, selling mainly to small and medium sized contractors for subdivisional and roading work. Legendary earthmovers: The Euclid/Terex S-24 scraper

The Terex S-24: an overview by Richard Campbell Designed as a direct replacement for its existing S-18 single engined motor scraper, the Euclid (later Terex) S-24 had a long career and was the company’s most successful single engined, open bowl scraper. Responding to industry requests for more horsepower and the fact that General Motors was going to discontinue manufacture of the series 6-110 engine, Euclid set about a redesign of the S-18 to utilise the new GM 12V-71 diesel engine. (The former 325 horsepower GM 6-110 had previously been the principal power unit for the S-18, SS-24 and TS-24 scrapers.) Several pilot models were trialled until an acceptable layout was reached. Euclid replaced the 3-speed Allison powershift transmission previously used with a 5-speed model increasing the unit’s top speed and made the 33.5×25 tyre standard (it was previously an option). The GM 12V-71 engine chosen for the new machine put out 392 flywheel horsepower, a considerable increase over the former 6-110 engine, so Euclid took this opportunity to increase the carrying capacity of the bowl, boosting it from 18 cubic yards struck to 24 cubic yards struck. However it still retained the S-18’s cable-operated apron. In this format, the new machine was released to the contracting world in 1961 as the Euclid S-24 or Euclid model 39LOT-46SH. Immediately successful, Euclid began producing the S-24 in quantity. As with all good machines, there is always room for a little improvement and it wasn’t long before Euclid began tweaking the new S-24 to further increase its performance and customer acceptability. The first minor alteration was in 1962 when the 5-speed Allison transmission was replaced by a 6-speed model, further increasing the machine’s top speed. In 1963 the cable apron was replaced by a dual hydraulically actuated model, very similar to that which had been tried experimentally on the twin-powered TS-24 scraper. An increase in engine horsepower was also made from 392 up to 423 flywheel horsepower. This was made possible by utilising the new N-series fuel injectors. Euclid also added an extra air cleaner at this point to cater for the engine’s increased air demands. The machine’s serial number designator was changed to reflect these modifications and became 39LOT-55SH. Next major modification came in 1969 when the naturally aspirated 12V-71N engine was replaced by the turbocharged 12V-71T. Horsepower remained the same but the engine now burned slightly less fuel, “breathed” better and was more efficient at altitude. The scraper was structurally reinforced in a number of places and several hydraulic revisions were undertaken. This machine was known as the S-24 model 49LOT-76SH and was the most numerous of all the S-24 models. In order to remain competitive in the earthmoving marketplace, Terex (the name changed from Euclid to Terex in 1968) completely redesigned the S-24 in the late 1970s to incorporate a power down bowl and axle suspension. The new machine was known as the Terex S-24B “Loadrunner” and bore very little resemblance to its predecessors other than its bowl capacity, 24 cubic yards. Power was provided by a turbocharged 475 horsepower GM 12V-71T engine connected to an Allison CLT-5865 6-speed powershift transmission. Terex- 248B Loadrunner Terex- 248B Loadrunner Standard tyre size was increased to 37.5×33. A further revision of this design was introduced in 1986 as the Terex S-24C. Terex offered an optional Cummins diesel for this model, the 480 horsepower KTA-19C and raised the heaped capacity to 34 cubic yards but it was all sadly to little avail. Very few of these powerful and imposing looking scrapers were actually manufactured. The S-24C was the last S-24 to be produced as not long after the company was wracked by bankruptcy, the IBH scandal, several takeovers and a general downturn in the earthmoving industry worldwide. Production of the TS-24 and TS-14 models was moved to Terex’s still profitable Scottish plant and the S-24 was discontinued. Unlike the S-24’s predecessor, the S-18 which was also manufactured for a time in the UK, the various models of S-24 were only produced at Terex’s Hudson, Ohio US facility. Classic Machines: Terex's S-35E elevating scraper

Thanks for checking out NZ Contractor magazine's Terex S-35E YouTube clip. In an attempt to break into the larger elevating scraper market, Euclid, in cooperation with Hancock, began investigating a single-engined elevating scraper in 1966. Tentatively rated at 32 cubic yards heaped capacity, the machine which used the tractor unit of an S-24 motor scraper was sent off to the company’s proving grounds at Milford, Michigan for evaluation. Test results revealed that the machine, while effective, was underpowered so the decision was made to utilise the tractor unit from the larger S-32 open-bowl scraper instead. This was a physically bigger machine than the S-24 and had almost 100 more horsepower which also permitted the use of a slightly higher load capacity. Test results were very favourable and in August 1968 the machine was put into limited production as the Terex model S-35E elevating scraper (the Terex name having been introduced by General Motors in 1968 following an anti-trust lawsuit in the USA). The S-35E entered a marketplace that was dominated by the Wabco 333F and Caterpillar 633. Sales were, however, moderate and the S-35E was not really ever seen in great numbers. A small horsepower increase was made in 1970, boosting output from 450 to 457 flywheel horsepower, but apart from this and the incorporation of other minor changes the S-35E remained essentially the same. In 1980 a S-35E-B model was produced utilising the tractor unit of the TS-32B. This machine featured the ‘Keystone’ styling first introduced on Terex scrapers with the TS-18. It also had a slightly redesigned scraper with a new elevator drive motor. However hardly any were manufactured before Terex discontinued the TS-32, S-35 and S-32 in 1981, citing high manufacturing costs due to a worldwide downturn in the sale of large scrapers. All production of the S-35E was undertaken in the USA at Hudson, Ohio, meaning no units were produced by Terex (Great Britain) or Brazil. The S-35E Described As befitting a product of General Motors, the S-35E was powered with a Detroit Diesel model 12V-71T turbocharged V-12 diesel which put out 457 horsepower at the flywheel. This was connected to an Allison VCLBT-5965 6-speed powershift transmission featuring a variable input torque converter that permitted more horsepower to the hydraulic pump for elevator loading and reduced wheelspin. Interestingly, this powertrain combination was exactly the same as fitted to the S-35E’s major competitor, the Wabco 333F. Brakes were air operated s-cam shoe type acting on all wheels and could be augmented by use of the in-built retarder in the Allison transmission. Where the rubber meets the road, the S-35E used 37.5×33 tyres with a nominal E3 type tread pattern. Alternatively, the use of radial steel cord tyres was an option for severe conditions. In standard operating configuration, the S-35E had a top speed of just over 34 miles per hour. Steering followed the standard Terex layout with two single stage double acting hydraulic rams giving a 90° turn to either side. As mentioned earlier, the business end of the machine, the bowl, was manufactured for Terex by Hancock (a division of Clark). Hancock was credited with inventing the elevating scraper concept. Without side boarding it held 35 cubic yards, a very healthy load in anyone’s terms. It was constructed of high strength steel with external box section bracing in typical Hancock fashion. The elevator motor and reduction gearbox was mounted on the right-hand side of the elevator frame which allowed fairly straightforward routing of all the necessary hydraulic lines. Comprised of twenty 8’ flights, the elevator chain had two forward and one reverse speed. A hydraulic adjuster located on the lower front portion of the ladder frame was used to maintain chain tension. This idea was far superior to their competitors’ chain adjustment methods that were carried out by the addition or subtraction of shims. A three-section cutting edge was fitted, the centre portion of which could be used in a drop centre configuration for easier loading. For the really tough stuff, six bolt-on teeth could be added. Ejection was via sliding floor and bulldozer ejector with a fixed cutting edge. The front of the sliding floor featured a drop down strike-off plate for even material spreading. Early S-35Es featured twin straight exhaust pipes that must have sounded amazing! By 1973 however, two large oval mufflers had been installed on the hood of the machine to reduce the sound level somewhat. Operators were provided with the standard Terex air suspension seat made by Milsco and a full set of instrumentation on the dash panel. Operation of the bowl was by three levers, one for raise/lower, one for the 2-speed elevator and the remaining lever controlled the ejector. Pedals consisted of brake, throttle and retarder.
