beneath the surface COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS FOR THE GLOBAL MINING THREAT Project Vision: Preventing Human Rights Abuses Related to Mining The objective of this multi-‐year project is to build a multimedia toolkit that educates, empowers, and connects communities impacted by extractive industries. The toolkit aims to stop human rights abuses before they occur and to put communities in a strong position to protect their rights and fight for justice. The project uses videos to share stories and practical advice from communities already impacted by mining with communities where mining will soon occur. These stories will form the foundation of a video toolkit that provides communities with strategies and techniques for protecting their rights, and inspires them to action. Cutting Edge Tools for Community Organizations All videos will be published with a facilitator’s guide to help maximize the impact of video screenings and support communities in taking meaningful action. Videos will be distributed on DVDs, USBs, and online, along with links to relevant guides and further information on key topics and strategies covered in the videos. Key partners will also be provided with projection equipment and hands-‐on training to launch their grassroots distribution program. Video Collection: Year 1 ● The Impacts of Mining (Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe) ● Baseline Data and Environmental Monitoring (Nigeria) ● Community Mapping and Resistance to Mining (Ghana) ● Building a Resistance Movement (Peru, forthcoming) ● Negotiating for Environmental Protections (Bolivia, forthcoming) ● Resettlement and Relocation (Zimbabwe, forthcoming) Iteration & Year 2 The second phase of our project emphasizes distribution, feedback, and iteration. We will hold special screenings with target audiences in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other countries where mining poses an imminent threat. We are also seeking feedback from experts and practitioners on how to improve the content, and our distribution and implementation strategy. Get Involved! If you’re interested in collaborating on the project, hosting a screening, or providing advice or feedback, please contact Jessie Landerman at [email protected]

Mining occurs throughout Australia, but its direct impacts on biodiversity are relatively limited compared with other major land uses because the areas affected are generally small. Dr Alan Andersen talks about the main impacts of mining on biodiversity and how these can be appropriately managed through processes like strategic regional assessments, use of bioindicators in rehabilitation, and biodiversity offsets. Surging demand for the metals used in electric car batteries is setting off a race to mine the deep seas. As the FT’s Henry Sanderson explains, the sea floor could contain more nickel, cobalt and rare earth metals than all land-based reserves combined. Miners say it may diversify supply, but environmentalists fear mining will do irreparable damage.

We went to West Virginia to investigate mountain-top removal -- which a way of extracting coal from deposits under mountains. Instead of drilling into the mountain and sending men underground to take out the coal in the traditional way, they just take the whole top of a mountain off. The modern mines of today recognise the importance of effectively managing the environmental impacts associated. We saw this in action at the Centennial Coal mines we visited in our latest AIMEX video story. They have developed environment and community policies that allow for continual improvement in the environmental management and performance of their sites. Meet some of those environmental scientists that manage these important policies and keep our mines on track. Visit AIMEX, September 1-4 at Sydney Showgrounds, Australia. But surface mining carries a huge cost: nothing less than mountains themselves. Science correspondent Miles O’Brien reports on how the Appalachian landscape is being fundamentally and irrevocably changed.

Environmental Festival Film 2015 - Albania. This short film aims to demonstrate the environmental impacts of chromium ore mines in Mati River springs at Krasta Region in Bulqiza district. In recent years the mining sector has been intensively developed but without environmental criteria. From the site surveys during 28/29 March 2015 it is noted an intense environmental impact as; mine waste disposal at river stream, sparse access roads associated with habitat fragmentation and induced erosion; loss of productive soil and threatening of red list endemic plant species (Crocus serpentini). The mining operations use also wood timber that is an added burden to the existing over cut forests in the area. We want to raise the awareness the public and other stakeholders that such mining is destroying the environmental resources and society health and prospective. The legislation to prevent such impacts exists but must be enforced from authorities. The companies must take their environmental and social responsibility; Investing little today will save our future. Civil society and the public must put under pressure the enforcement authorities and raise their voice for such catastrophic situation. We hope that this short movie will scratch everybody conscience to help in the environmental protection.

Veteran broadcaster Ted Failon weigh the pros and cons of mining in the Philippines and assess if the revenues generated from it are worth its negative impacts on the environment. This was aired on June 16 in "Failon Ngayon. Mining experts estimate that the Philippines' potential mineral resources are reportedly worth P54.5 trillion, which could possibly pay the country's large foreign debt. But in exchange of this fortune, mining poses calamities and serious health hazards. Ruthless deforestation in the mountains of CARAGA, the Philippines' mining capital, caused severe flooding in several areas that took the lives of many locals. Meanwhile, residents in Claver, Surigao Del Norte, have acquired various lung illnesses, cough, and flu due to the harmful matter and gases emitted by mines in the area. Even their beaches turned red and were rendered unusable as an effect of Laterite. Does the country benefit enough from the environmental impacts of mining? Is it worth destroying our natural resources considering that only 2% of the price of every exported mineral product goes to the government? Broken Landscape: In rural India, the demand for coal has drastically altered the environment and the lives of those who depend on it. Unregulated 'rat-hole' mining serves the economy, but endangers both landscape and livelihood. “This place was pure and clean before. We used the river for drinking and cooking.” One fisherman recalls with painful nostalgia his memories of the river the village used to enjoy. “Now the people do not touch it. They are repulsed by it.” This is the result of the thousands of small-hold mines in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. They have run with no restriction – until now. The National Green Tribunal recently shut down mining in the region at the expense of the local economy, leading to coal mine owners and workers staging protests. With coal in such high demand, India has been forced to chose between economy and environment.
