Lecture notes: http://learning.stat.purdue.edu/mlss/_media/mlss/han.pdf Mining Heterogeneous Information Networks Multiple typed objects in the real world are interconnected, forming complex heterogeneous information networks. Different from some studies on social network analysis where friendship networks or web page networks form homogeneous information networks, heterogeneous information network reflect complex and structured relationships among multiple typed objects. For example, in a university network, objects of multiple types, such as students, professors, courses, departments, and multiple typed relationships, such as teach and advise are intertwined together, providing rich information. We explore methodologies on mining such structured information networks and introduce several interesting new mining methodologies, including integrated ranking and clustering, classification, role discovery, data integration, data validation, and similarity search. We show that structured information networks are informative, and link analysis on such networks becomes powerful at uncovering critical knowledge hidden in large networks. The tutorial also presents a few promising research directions on mining heterogeneous information networks. The workshop was held May 7-11, 2012 at the University of California, Berkeley. They have several advantageous properties including the ability to encode semantic meaning. We have created a distributed memory system for learning sequences of sparse distribute representations. In addition we have created a means of encoding structured and unstructured data into sparse distributed representations. The resulting memory system learns in an on-line fashion making it suitable for high velocity data streams. We are currently applying it to commercially valuable data streams for prediction, classification, and anomaly detection In this talk I will describe this distributed memory system and illustrate how it can be used to build models and make predictions from data streams. Building an Occupancy Model from Sensor Networks in Office Environments", 5th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC'11), Ghent, Belgium. August, 2011. The work presented here aims to answer this question: using just binary occupancy sensors is it possible to build a behaviour occupancy model over long-term logged data?. Sensor's measurements are grouped to form artificial words (activities) and documents (set of activities). The goal is to infer the latent topics which are assumed to be the common routines from the observed data. An unsupervised probabilistic model, namely the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is applied to automatically discover the latent topics (routines) in the data. Experimental results using real logged data of 24 weeks from an office building, with different number of topics, are shown. Abstract Michael Franklin (Computer Science Dept., UC Berkeley) Data stream query processing is a key technique for providing low latency answers to Big Data questions. The basic idea is to provide database-style query processing over data on-the-fly as they arrive at the system, in contrast to the store-first, query-later approach followed by traditional database systems. Work in this area was originally motivated by "real-time" data-intensive scenarios such as sensor networks, financial trading applications, and network security. Stream query processing caught the imagination of the research community due to the new applications it could enable as well as the large number of traditional database assumptions that needed to be rethought and the new opportunities for optimization this mode of execution provided. Lately, stream processing has been moving from the research lab into the real world through efforts at start-up companies, traditional database vendors, and open source projects. Not surprisingly, the practical uses and advantages of the technology are turning out to be different than many had originally expected. In this talk, I'll survey the state of the art in stream query processing and related technologies such as event processing, discuss some of the implications for data-intensive system architectures, and provide my views on the future role of this technology from both a research and a commercial perspective. In particular, I'll describe the notion of Continuous Analytics, which leverages Stream Query Processing techniques to solve some of the inherent bottlenecks that have existed in database systems since their inception.

Abstract Alexis Bondu (Electricite de France R&D) In recent years, the amount of data to process has increased in many application areas such as network monitoring, web click and sensor data analysis. Data stream mining answers to the challenge of massive data processing, this paradigm allows for treating pieces of data on the fly and overcomes exhaustive data storage. The detection of changes in a data stream distribution is an important issue which application area is wide. In this article, change detection problem is turned into a supervised learning task. We chose to exploit the supervised discretization method "MODL" given its interesting properties. Our approach is favorably compared with an alternative method on artificial data streams, and is applied on real data streams.

A video from the UC Berkeley Conference: From Data to Knowledge: Machine-Learning with Real-time and Streaming Applications (May 7-11, 2012). Abstract Alexandr Andoni (Microsoft Research) Suppose we want to estimate a sum of bounded reals a_1+a_2+...+a_n with access to only some "limited information" about a_i's. A classical setting is where we estimate the entire sum by knowing only a random subset of a_i's. Naturally, there is a trade-off between the size of the subset and the resulting approximation. Motivated by applications where this trade-off is not good enough, we introduce Precision Sampling, which is an estimation technique that uses a more general kind of "limited information" about a_i's. Instead of obtaining a subset of a_i's as above, here we obtain a rough estimate for each of the n quantities, up to various prescribed degrees of "precision" (approximation). The trade-off then becomes between the precision of the estimates of a_i's and the resulting approximation to the total sum. We show one can obtain a trade-off that is qualitatively better in the precision sampling setting than in the aforementioned (vanilla sampling) setting. Our resulting tool leads to new sublinear algorithms. In one instance, it gives a simplified algorithm for a class of streaming problems. In another instance, the tool plays an instrumental role in a query-efficient algorithm for estimating edit distance. Joint work with Robi Krauthgamer (Weizmann Inst.) and Krzysztof Onak (CMU).

In The Zero Marginal Cost Society, New York Times bestselling author Jeremy Rifkin describes how the emerging Internet of Things is speeding us to an era of nearly free goods and services, precipitating the meteoric rise of a global Collaborative Commons and the eclipse of capitalism. Rifkin uncovers a paradox at the heart of capitalism that has propelled it to greatness but is now taking it to its death—the inherent entrepreneurial dynamism of competitive markets that drives productivity up and marginal costs down, enabling businesses to reduce the price of their goods and services in order to win over consumers and market share. (Marginal cost is the cost of producing additional units of a good or service, if fixed costs are not counted.) While economists have always welcomed a reduction in marginal cost, they never anticipated the possibility of a technological revolution that might bring marginal costs to near zero, making goods and services priceless, nearly free, and abundant, and no longer subject to market forces. Now, a formidable new technology infrastructure—the Internet of things (IoT)—is emerging with the potential of pushing large segments of economic life to near zero marginal cost in the years ahead. Rifkin describes how the Communication Internet is converging with a nascent Energy Internet and Logistics Internet to create a new technology platform that connects everything and everyone. Billions of sensors are being attached to natural resources, production lines, the electricity grid, logistics networks, recycling flows, and implanted in homes, offices, stores, vehicles, and even human beings, feeding Big Data into an IoT global neural network. Prosumers can connect to the network and use Big Data, analytics, and algorithms to accelerate efficiency, dramatically increase productivity, and lower the marginal cost of producing and sharing a wide range of products and services to near zero, just like they now do with information goods. Rifkin concludes that capitalism will remain with us, albeit in an increasingly streamlined role, primarily as an aggregator of network services and solutions, allowing it to flourish as a powerful niche player in the coming era. This technique is used iteratively to assign these nodes ID numbers ranging from 1 to N. This assignment is anonymous in that the identities received are unknown to the other members of the group. Resistance to collusion among other members is verified in an information theoretic sense when private communication channels are used. This assignment of serial numbers allows more complex data to be shared and has applications to other problems in privacy preserving data mining, collision avoidance in communications and distributed database access. The required computations are distributed without using a trusted central authority. Existing and new algorithms for assigning anonymous IDs are examined with respect to trade-offs between communication and computational requirements. The new algorithms are built on top of a secure sum data mining operation using Newton's identities and Sturm's theorem. An algorithm for distributed solution of certain polynomials over finite fields enhances the scalability of the algorithms. Markov chain representations are used to find statistics on the number of iterations required, and computer algebra gives closed form results for the completion rates.
