Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Calculation
In this video, Lindsey Shepard will walk you through the OEE calculation itself and how you can utilize it to help improve your process. The basis of the OEE calculation is as simple as it is brilliant. It assumes a theoretical maximum capacity on the one hand and the actual output on the other. The OEE calculation maps out the loss landscape clearly in a way that everyone can understand. The OEE calculation poses these 3 questions: Is the machine operating or not? (Availability) How fast is the machine running: (Performance) How many products met the specifications? (quality) We start this calculation with Availability. If the machine is producing the product while it was available to the production-team we know it was running. The ‘availability rate’ indicates the relationship between the time that the machine could theoretically have been in operation and the time that there was actual output. For example: If the machine delivers 360 minutes of output regardless of speed and quality during an 8-hour shift which is 480 minutes, then the availability rate is 360/480= 75%. In other words, 25% of the available time is “lost”. OEE now asks the second question of Performance Say that the machine is designed to produce 10 pieces a minute, in which case you would expect to have 3,600 pieces after 360 minutes. Of course, this is only possible if the machine ‘performs’ while it is running, at 100% speed. The performance rate determines whether this is true: In the performance rate, ‘theoretical output’ is the output that the machine could have made in theory if the machine had operated at maximum speed during the time that it actually operated. For example, the machine operates 360 minutes and production speed is 10 pieces per minute. The theoretical output is 360 x10 or 3600 pieces. Actual output which includes both good AND rejected pieces though is only 2880 pieces. So performance is 2880/3600 or 80%. So when we know how long the machine ran and how fast it ran, the next question is Quality. Once we have measured the time and speed losses, we focus our attention on the quality of the products that are being made. The relationship between the number of units produced and the number of the units produced that meet the specification is called the ‘quality rate’. For example, we know that during the production time, 2880 pieces were produced, but 144 of those pieces were rejected giving us a total of 2736 good pieces. To calculate the quality rate, we take 2736 divided by 2880 which equals 95%. The OEE is calculated by multiplying the availability rate, by the performance rate, by the quality rate. Availability rate is b divided by A 360 minutes divided by 480 minutes which equal 75%. Performance rate is d divided c or 2880 pieces divided by 3600 or 80%. Quality rate is f divided by e or 2736 units divided by 2880 units or 95%. So the OEE is 75% times 80% times 95% which gives us 57%. So in this example, your machine is running at 57% Overall Equipment Effectiveness. You can take this information and begin to look at options for improving availability, performance or quality and see how small changes can make a big difference in your machine’s OEE. You have to keep in mind how easy it will be to deliver proof for patent infringement. Can you later easily find proof for a complex mixture of polymers in the final product with regard to their identity and their weight percentages? - How can the claims be circumvented and avoided by competitors? Always have the infringer in mind when drafting patent claims. What would you tell an infringer how he could circumvent this patent claim? Now for the basic steps how to draft patent claims: 1) What is the invention, what are the pieces and parts of the invention. Are there multiple versions of the invention? First you need to really understand the invention in great details and understand, how a particular example of the invention works from start to finish. 2) Search for Prior Art: do a good search for prior art and identify as many differences to the invention per relevant document as possible. 3) Two-Part-Claims: Preamble, Body: The most generic version of your invention is defined. There is at least some difference when compared with the prior art. Try to find one feature or an as broad as possible combination of features that distinguishes the claimed subject matter from the prior art. 4) Are all features somehow connected? If the features are not physically or logically connected, the examiner may object to the claims for expressing several distinct inventions and you may have to divide the patent application. 5) Different claim types? Did you use different claim types? 12 common mistakes: - More than one sentence: only write one sentence per claim. Otherwise it is considered unclear and the features of the second sentence may not be seen as limiting the scope. - Word “and”: when claiming a list of things that are parts of an invention, use the word “and” only before the last part in a list. - Transitional phrases: characterized in that, Comprising, consisting of, having, composed of: “characterized in that” divides the preamble of a claim from the body and is the most common and general phrase to do so. “Comprising” is followed by an open list that may also comprise additional elements that are not listed in the claim. “consisting of” is followed by a closed list. No other elements are present in the invention – typically resulting in a very narrow scope. - Inconsistent terminology: always use the same word for the same concept in your patent application. Example: do not use car and automobile in your application to mean the exact same concept. - Claiming a result: try to avoid claiming a result rather than the concepts achieve the result. Result oriented language is typically objected to as unclear. - Too little detail: Don't leave anything out of a claim which is necessary to work the invention and necessary to distinguish the claim from the prior art. - Too much detail: try to leave out any feature that is not necessary to work the invention and distinguish the claimed invention from the prior art. This will make your claim too narrow. - Dependent claims that broaden or contradict the independent claims: - No trademarks in claims: avoid trademarks in claims - Avoid “means plus function” - Antecendent basis: when you first introduce a new feature in the set of claims, use the indefinite article. From then on use the definite article “the” to refer this this particular feature previously mentioned in the claims. Now for my personal strategy to get a really strong set of claims and patent application: 1) Identify the most relevant e.g. 5 prior art documents. 2) Identify as many technical differences to each of these documents, e.g. at least 20 per document. 3) Use the common differentiating feature that can least easily be circumvented by infringers as the body in the first claim. Include other such features in the dependent claims. Include all other such features in the description as preferred embodiments. Software Quality Metrics You Need To Know

View the full Whiteboard Friday series on “Metrics that Matter in Software Testing”: http://bit.ly/2nzSADC Software quality metrics refer to the results of test executions, including metrics like the time it takes to execute tests and session data. These metrics may also include non-results type of reports such as exploratory testing that is focused less on the actual pass/fail results, but more on the overall user experience. Understanding software quality metrics usually begins with the three core reports: test run summary and defect priority/severity and status. The test run summary is integral to showing tests by cycle, project or release -- ideally by the functional area. Look at the latest test run execution results in this view. The defect report by status, severity and priority helps determine the importance of defects found to evaluate which bugs need to addressed immediately and triage the remaining defects for resolution. Extra software reports include executions by week/sprint, results received per requirement and defect density. Understanding test execution by week or sprint shows which days are active for testing and allows you to reallocate test resources based on those needs. Results per requirement reports show which percentage of testing is assigned to each requirement, helping you identify over and under testing of requirements and reassign test executions appropriately. And defect density shows the defects that make up an application or functional area to identify risky applications or functional areas. A couple pro tips for software quality metrics is to keep track of the number of manual versus automated tests, days since test execution run and flapping. Knowing the number of manual versus automated test allows you to help identify some manual tests that can be moved to automated execution, saving time, as well as understand which type of testing produces high value. Tracking the days since test run, on an individual-type basis means you can gauge which test you haven’t run in an extended period of time and reduce the library of tests that have not been run recently. Flapping reports show you which tests always pass under one set of conditions while always failing under another set. When this happens, look at whether the test case has changed and that it is written correctly or check if there’s a problem with the requirement.

Top 5 Tips for Writing Successful Specifications for 09 3000 Tile Installations Specification documents within Section 09 30 00 provide detailed direction and warranty elements for tile and stone installations. A Clear, Concise and Correct specification guides everyone involved with the project and contains the essentials to protect the owner’s investment. A good tile spec helps prevent delays from RFIs, costly change orders or even failures in the tile assembly. Tip #1: List specific methods and products It is critical to list the appropriate Tile Council of North America installation methods for each tiled area along with the specific products for the Basis of Design. Specifying a Basis of Design establishes the required quality and performance for your particular application such as extra heavy service conditions, wet areas, suspended slabs, balconies and exterior facades. These demanding conditions require specific higher performing products. To help prevent errors and misunderstandings by contractors, delete all non-applicable terms from each specification you submit. This makes your instructions clear and concise. Tip #2: Properly specify substrate conditions and preparation requirements The prevalence of large format tile, a tile with any side longer than 15 inches, is driving the need to update tile specs. The larger the tile, the flatter the substrate must be to prevent an uneven surface. For large format tile, variations in flatness or walls or floors should not exceed 1/8" in 10 feet or 1/16" in 24 inches. The best way to meet or exceed this level of flatness on floors is by using a high strength, rapid-setting self-leveling underlayment like CUSTOM LevelQuik RS. Any wet or intermittently wet area must be treated with an effective waterproofing membrane meeting the requirements of ANSI A118.10 such as RedGard Waterproofing and Crack Prevention Membrane. For areas such as a steam room, specify that the ANSI A118.10 membrane also meet the Low permeability requirements of ASTM E96 Method E to prevent moisture vapor transmission. Although many TCNA details list membranes as “optional,” strong consideration should be used in deciding to eliminate them from your specification as water damage is among the most costly repairs. Due to fast track projects combined with thinner and less rigid construction methods, hard finishes are more subject to damage caused by movement. These conditions call for crack isolation membranes meeting ANSI A118.12. RedGard Waterproofing and Crack Prevention Membrane also meets these requirements. Multi-story residential construction should include a sound reduction membrane with a high delta Impact Insulation Class rating to help prevent sound transmission through tiled floors. Tip #3: Include control and movement joints in the tile assembly The design team is responsible for determining movement joint locations. Properly placed movement joints will help prevent failure of the tile assembly. Their inclusion is particularly important for demanding installations such as suspended slabs and exteriors. But any tile exposed to deflection or thermal cycling, even interiors subject to UV exposure, merits extra consideration. Perimeter joints are commonly overlooked or improperly placed, and a detailed specification will help this. Movement joints must be filled with a suitable sealant that will add flexibility to the assembly. Address control joint relocation per TCNA F125 Full Coverage or F125 Partial Coverage and specify an appropriate crack isolation membrane in PART 2. It is important to bring expansion joints, isolation joints and construction joints directly through new tile work, per TCNA Detail EJ171. Tip #4: Ensure a long lasting system warranty There are two ways to ensure that product quality extends beyond meeting baseline ANSI standards. First, specify a system of products from a manufacturer that will provide the owner with a warranty of not less than 10 years from the date of substantial completion. Second, obtain all of the products in the system from a single source manufacturer to ensure full compatibility and warranty compliance. System warranties from CUSTOM offers the best coverage in the industry with terms up to a Lifetime. Coverage includes labor to repair or replace the tile assembly in the event of failure. Tip #5: Update your master spec The time taken to update your master spec can prevent many issues on a project. Porcelain tile and installation products along with standards have changed. Your entire specification document – not just the 03 90 00 section – should be kept current to reflect these changes.

But occasionally, a sales rep will have a better relationship with a factory and so are able to negotiate lower prices. They will also often have good english, making communication easier. Vet sales reps and treat them as equals during the process of picking and choosing the right supplier.

Further, PDF documents are used extensively in other publishing contexts, and are in many industries and roles the primary means of data interchange between organizations. Despite its ubiquity and the concordant importance of its file format and specification, the heritage and history of the PDF format and specification are not widely known and the engineering challenges and design choices it and its predecessors faced and made are rarely contemplated. In this talk, Chas will provide a narrative history of PDF and its (immediate) predecessors — PostScript and Interpress — and explore the problem space of page description languages in general. Introduction to Kmap | What is Minterm, Maxterm, Sum of Products and Product of Sum | DE.16
This is an introductory video on K-maps in digital electronics series. What if instead of representing truth tables, we arranged in a grid format. This grid-like representation is called Karnaugh Map or Kmap. Each position in a grid corresponds to a truth table entry. But why do we need to represent the same information in two ways? This will be explained in the next video where we will learn how to group terms in Kmap. Consider this truth table which has 2 inputs. It will have four input combinations. In K maps, the values inside the squares are copied from the output column of the truth table. Around the edge of the K map is the values of the two input variable. A is at the top and B is along the left-hand side. A can take maximum 2 values 0 and 1. Same for input B. Consider truth table for a 3 input variable. Since it would have 8 combinations there will be 8 cells in Kmap. The order of terms isn't random. The terms go 00, 01, 11, 10. The terms are not arranged in a numerical sequence! Imagine moving around in the K Map. Every time you cross a horizontal term only one variable changes value. Same goes along the vertical side. In the truth table, 0 corresponds to a complemented variable, and a 1 corresponds to a true variable. For example, consider 010. It corresponds to A’ AND B AND C’. It is called SOP or sum of products. Each single cell that contains a 1 represents a minterm in the function, and each minterm can be thought of as a "product" term. Thus, this expression is called SOP or sum of the product. Similarly, a maxterm is a Boolean expression resulting in a 0 for the output of a single cell expression, and 1s for all other cells in the K map, or truth table. Thus for N variables, you will have 2^N possible combinations and 2^N places in a truth table or Karnaugh Map. For 4 input variable, you will consider 16 cells in Kmap. A AND B along this direction and C AND D along this direction. For example: the project must be completed by a certain date; the project must not spend more than an agreed budget and the products and services created must meet a defined specification. But because projects are unique and we don’t know exactly what will happen, there’s a good chance that you’ll need to adjust the balance between these parameters over time. This means a ‘trade off’ – to take more time, spend more money or agree to reduce scope and/or the quality specification. For example, if you’re delivering a new sporting facility to a deadline for a major competition then you would choose to either spend more money and/or reduce specification in order to meet the date. If the date wasn’t critical, you may choose not to trade scope for time and take the time, and spend the money you need to get the product you designed.
