A Better Data Revolution | Praveen Kopalle | TEDxDartmouth
While the lure (and lore) of big data is tempting, Praveen Kopalle posits that the big data revolution really is a “better data” revolution. He presents results of two real-life case studies in big data and predictive analytics where multi-billion dollar companies were able to leverage the power of data to make better managerial decisions. He describes why data mining and machine learning, despite their obvious value, will never obviate the need for marketing and economic theory (i.e. “where to look in the data”), while revealing the importance of experimentation and exogenous variation, how managerial knowledge and statistical methods can lead to smart data compression, how better data will feed into predictive models, and how firms are likely to use these models for decision making. Praveen Kopalle is Associate Dean for the MBA Program, Signal Companies’ Professor of Management, Professor of Marketing at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. Praveen received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, and B.E. from Osmania University. Professor Kopalle’s teaching and research interests are in Marketing, Statistics, Pricing, new products/innovation, promotions, customer expectations, and e-commerce. Praveen’s research has been published in many top-tier journals including Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Management Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, etc. He has been invited to speak at over fifty universities and institutes worldwide. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Machine Learning Knowledge Extraction MAKE it short
MAKE stands for MAchine Learning & Knowledge Extraction. Machine learning deals with understanding intelligence for the design and development of algorithms that can learn from data and improve over time. The original definition was “the artificial generation of knowledge from experience”. The challenge is to discover relevant structural patterns and/or temporal patterns (“knowledge”) in such data, which are often hidden and not accessible to a human. Today, machine learning is the fastest growing technical field, having many application domains, e.g. health, Industry 4.0, recommender systems, speech recognition, autonomous driving (Google car), etc. The grand challenge is in decision making under uncertainty, and probabilistic inference enormously influenced artificial intelligence and statistical learning. The inverse probability allows to infer unknowns, learn from data and make predictions to support decision making. Whether in social networks, recommender systems, smart health or smart factory applications, the increasingly complex data sets require efficient, useful and useable intelligence for knowledge discovery and knowledge extraction. A synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches of two domains offer ideal conditions towards unraveling these challenges and to foster new, efficient and user-friendly machine learning algorithms and knowledge extraction tools: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery/Data Mining (KDD), aiming at augmenting human intelligence with computational intelligence and vice versa. Successful Machine Learning & Knowledge extraction needs a concerted international effort without boundaries, supporting collaborative and integrative cross-disciplinary research between experts from 7 fields: in short: 1-data, 2-learning, 3-graphs, 4-topology, 5-entropy, 6-visualization, and 7-privacy; see http://hci-kdd.org/about-the-holzinger-group https://cd-make.net/about/ http://www.mdpi.com/journal/make/about Andreas Holzinger, 14.05.2017

Pat Dorsey: "The Little Book that Builds Wealth" | Talks at Google
What does it mean for a company to have a moat? What are the key drivers to valuation? Pat Dorsey will use examples to shed light on these, and more questions. About the Book: Capitalism works. That’s why most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability over time. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. He will discuss these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at Dorsey Asset Management. About the author: Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. From 2000 to 2011, Pat was Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar’s equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar’s economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Pat is also the author of two books — The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing and The Little Book that Builds Wealth — and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, the New York Times, and BusinessWeek. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Peter Schiff SchiffGold CEO
Peter Schiff is Chairman of SchiffGold, CEO and Chief Global Strategist of Euro Pacific Capital, Inc, and host of The Peter Schiff Show. Peter is an economic forecaster and investment advisor influenced by the free-market Austrian School of economics. He is one of the few forecasters who accurately and publicly predicted the 2007 housing market collapse and subsequent 2008 financial crisis. His latest best-selling book, The Real Crash: America’s Coming Bankruptcy – How to Save Yourself and Your Country, warns that the 2008 crisis was just the prelude to a larger sovereign debt crisis in the United States that may lead to a collapse of the US dollar. Peter recommends long-term investment in foreign markets with sound fiscal policies, as well as global commodities including buying gold, silver and other physical precious metals. Background Peter Schiff’s investment career began with Shearson Lehman Brothers in the early 1990s. In 1996, he and a partner started Euro Pacific Capital in Los Angeles, later moving the headquarters to Connecticut. The firm has since expanded, with offices in Scottsdale, Arizona, Boca Raton, Florida, Newport Beach, California, Los Angeles and New York City. Euro Pacific Capital’s investment strategy focuses on long-term wealth savings in the face of a declining US dollar with an emphasis on emerging market and commodity-focused investments. Peter is best known for accurately forecasting the 2008 financial crisis. During a Fox News debate in December 2006, Schiff said, “What’s going to happen in 2007 is that real estate prices are going to come crashing back down to Earth.” Business news journals reported that Schiff accurately predicted the crisis, while “nearly all [macroeconomists] failed to foresee the recession despite plenty of warning signs.” Peter has also worked in the political arena, first serving as an economic advisor for Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign and later running for United States Senate in Connecticut in 2010 as a Republican. Politically, he leans Libertarian, with an emphasis on fiscal conservatism. Peter started SchiffGold in 2010 after recommending for decades that investors allocate 10-20% of their portfolios to physical precious metals. Peter became concerned that some of his Euro Pacific Capital clients were being misled into purchasing overpriced “numismatic” gold and silver products from gold dealers with unsavory business practices. Peter started SchiffGold to provide a trustworthy alternative that would sell only the most liquid physical bullion products at the lowest possible prices. SchiffGold is backed by Peter Schiff’s Guarantee that it will only sell the most liquid physical bullion products at the lowest possible prices. Peter’s expertise in money, economic theory, and international investing makes him a highly sought after as a speaker and analyst. He has been quoted and interviewed hundreds of times by media outlets around the world, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Die Zeit, Tokyo Shinbun, South China Morning Post, Investor’s Business Daily, The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. He regularly appears on CNBC, CNN, CBC, Al Jazeera, Fox News, and Fox Business Network.
Intelligence is Not Enough: The Genius Zone - Dean Simonton #576
This episode of Bulletproof Radio includes a surprising amount of laughter that makes the topic of intelligence and genius a fun listen. Our guest is Dean Keith Simonton, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of California-Davis. He’s known as the “Maverick Psychologist” who has been defying the establishment all of his nearly half-century career in the areas of genius, creativity, aesthetics, and leadership. In this lively conversation, you’ll learn that intelligence needs a sprinkling of grit, creativity and imagination to flourish into genius. You’ll find out that taking risks matters: “In order to make discoveries, in order to invent new things, you have to be willing to try things out and fail.” You’ll discover, too, that creators (typically introverts) and leaders (typically extroverts) use their smarts in significantly different ways. “I think the problem is that when people think that they don't have a genius level IQ,” Dr. Dean says. “They may think they're doomed or they're not going to be able to achieve much.” But, “you can't let the IQ score determine who you are.” His most recent book gives a “genius checklist” of tips for anyone to follow. Dr. Dean studies the cognitive, personal, developmental, social, and cultural factors behind eminence, giftedness, and talent. He’s researched some of the greatest figures throughout history and examined why their achievements—in science, philosophy, literature, music, art, cinema, politics, and war—have stood the test of time. Be open to today’s experience (hint… it’s a personality predictor of outstanding achievement) and ... Enjoy the show! Raising the Digital Trajectory of Healthcare
Table of Contents Q&A 1:14:29 Should healthcare be more digitized? Absolutely. But if we go about it the wrong way... or the naïve way... we will take two steps forward and three steps back. Join Health Catalyst's President of Technology, Dale Sanders, for a 90-minute webinar in which he will describe the right way to go about the technical digitization of healthcare so that it increases the sense of humanity during the journey. The topics Dale covers include: • The human, empathetic components of healthcare’s digitization strategy • The AI-enabled healthcare encounter in the near future • Why the current digital approach to patient engagement will never be effective • The dramatic near-term potential of bio-integrated sensors • Role of the “Digitician” and patient data profiles • The technology and architecture of a modern digital platform • The role of AI vs. the role of traditional data analysis in healthcare • Reasons that home grown digital platforms will not scale, economically Most of the data that’s generated in healthcare is about administrative overhead of healthcare, not about the current state of patients’ well-being. On average, healthcare collects data about patients three times per year from which providers are expected to optimize diagnoses, treatments, predict health risks and cultivate long-term care plans. Where’s the data about patients’ health from the other 362 days per year? McKinsey ranks industries based on their Digital Quotient (DQ), which is derived from a cross product of three areas: Data Assets x Data Skills x Data Utilization. Healthcare ranks lower than all industries except mining. It’s time for healthcare to raise its Digital Quotient, however, it’s a delicate balance. The current “data-driven” strategy in healthcare is a train wreck, sucking the life out of clinicians’ sense of mastery, autonomy, and purpose. Healthcare’s digital strategy has largely ignored the digitization of patients’ state of health, but that’s changing, and the change will be revolutionary. Driven by bio-integrated sensors and affordable genomics, in the next five years, many patients will possess more data and AI-driven insights about their diagnosis and treatment options than healthcare systems, turning the existing dialogue with care providers on its head. It’s going to happen. Let’s make it happen the right way.

What is the Impact of NHL Hockey Fights?
http://powerscouthockey.com is focused on evaluating different elements of hockey to uncover what is most important to winning. NHL fights are just one of the many elements PowerScout measured to uncover their impact on games. Statistics show that fights can add momentum to one team or another. Recently PowerScout did deeper research to see if fights have any impact on goal scoring and on winning for either team. The numbers so far show that NHL fights have a minimal effect on goal scoring and on winning compared to other elements like having a good penalty killing unit for example. Read full report: http://powerscouthockey.com/node/512 13 years of research into what makes teams win has shown that there are 12 player skills that are key to teams that win, but the result of this research shows that a defensemen needs different skills compared to a winger. Learn more: http://powerscouthockey.com/point-shares About Terry Appleby Terry Appleby, founder of the PowerScout Hockey system, is a retired Senior Economic Research Analyst for the Alberta government who has a thorough background in sports statistics and analysis, having done research into the NHL, the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB). Terry is currently a 20 year member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) where he sits on the Statistical Analysis committee and is also part of the Business of Baseball committee. He began his statistics research in the 1970's during the creation of his critically-acclaimed CFL board game. In the 1980s he began his NHL stats research where he developed and created an NHL board game called 'National Pro Hockey.' The big breakthrough came after reading an October 1998 column in the Edmonton Journal by sports columnist Mark Spector, who is now with Rogers Sportsnet. It was a light-hearted forecast of the forthcoming season for the Edmonton Oilers. "Mark Spector's column led me to review conventional wisdom by asking two fundamental questions, says Terry. "Which hockey player stats are important in explaining why teams win?' and 'How important are they really?" This led him to reflect on Wayne Gretzky and how he was introduced to Edmonton in 1979 after a trade with the Indianapolis Racers. Oilers' owner Peter Pocklington had introduced Gretzky as a player who was going to help the team win. "If the purpose of an NHL hockey player is to help the team win, why aren't we measuring him that way?" Terry asked himself. After a further 13 years of NHL statistics research where he analysed over 14,000 NHL hockey games, 12,000 NHL hockey players and 28,000 NHL goaltender performances, he discovered that for centers, wingers and defencemen there are 12 important measurable player skills that help teams win and 11 different metrics for goalies. "The 12 key skills obviously include goal scoring and passing ability for assists," says Terry. "But the data clearly showed that it's important to also consider shooting accuracy, toughness, anticipation, discipline, stick-handling, reliability, positioning, aggressiveness, skating speed and experience." All these years of research eventually led to the creation of the PowerScout Point Shares NHL player stats ratings, a system that revolves around 4 'super' stats that now allows direct comparisons between skaters and goalies. Measuring the elements that contribute to winning became the foundation of all other tools that make up the overall PowerScout Hockey system, resulting in what the company describes as the most advanced, most accurate and most predictive method of NHL hockey analysis ever created. The company was incorporated in 2009 when entrepreneur Marc Appleby, Terry's son, became compelled to make the system available to the public and to professionals. Marc gained some prominence after his appearances on the CBC TV show Dragons' Den in 2008 and again in 2009 where a combined 3 million viewers saw him pitch his winter traction product 'EcoTraction' — it has been referred to as one of the top pitches on the show because all five 'Dragons' agreed to a deal in front of a national audience. Today, he continues to work closely with former 'Dragon' on the Board of Earth Innovations, the company he co-founded to distribute EcoTraction. Brett, one of Canada's most successful business leaders, is now also connected to the NHL after acquiring 5% equity in the Nashville Predators hockey team, news that received wide coverage in Canada and the US. Washoe County uses CaseWare Monitor to identify high-risk transactions.
My name is Alison Gordon. I’m Washoe County, Nevada’s internal auditor of one. I am a Certified Public Accountant and also a Certified Fraud Examiner. I have probably well over somewhere between 20 and 25 years of audit experience... We decided to do Continuous Monitoring for several reasons. First of all, Nevada and Washoe County has been dealing with a severely depressed economy. We’ve had high mortgage foreclosures, which we are still having, we have a high unemployment rate, and this is still continuing to this day even though the rest of the nation is from what I hear improving in their economy, Nevada is still struggling. And because of those issues, our general fund revenue decreased about 36 million dollars and we had to make various staff reductions, employee pay cuts and that created some risk. We went from two internal auditors to one, our budget staff were reduced. Again, decreased oversight, risk increases because staffing is short, there’s less oversight and shortcuts can be taken. On our vendors, we look at things like address changes, bank detail changes, street address changes, and we also look to see if a vendor is only showing a post office box because that can be indicative of fraud. We look at several areas of transactional analysis; requisition of approvals, compliance with transaction thresholds, dollar amounts of transactions require certain levels of approval. We also do payment invoice comparisons and approvals. One of my favorite benefits of Continuous Monitoring is that it focuses more on loss prevention as opposed to cost recovery. Loss prevention is really a proactive method to avoid the occurrence of inappropriate transactions versus cost recovery which is recouping funds that have been lost. KPMG did a survey several years ago that showed it takes about 342 days to even detect a fraud, and that’s almost a year, at which point, only about 90% of all losses are unrecoverable, so it makes perfect sense to focus on loss prevention. Another benefit is that problem identification is near to the time when the transaction took place, it’s more real time. Another benefit is that Monitor can look at multiple focus areas at any one time, sort of like a virtual super auditor. It can audit revenues, expenditures, payroll, grants all at the same time. Another benefit is that Continuous Monitoring can be used to access data through multiple varieties of system platforms such as ERP systems, like SAP which is what we use at the county, legacy internally develop systems, third-party data. It can also be used with data dumps from other systems that you may use internally. At the county, we use Tiburon which tracks our citation and emergency call data, as well as Manatron which holds our property tax data. The quality of the analysis performed by Continuous Monitoring is much better than when using manual techniques. For example, Continuous Monitoring can be used to analyze 100% of the transactions versus auditor sample of fewer items, and the time to analyze transactions goes from days to minutes. What I decided to do was select the process that would give me the biggest bang for my buck, and I determined that it would be Accounts Payable. As part of implementing a Continuous Monitoring process, you need to make sure you have a thorough understanding of the process flow and the potential areas that you want to test. Once you believe you have this documented, it’s then very important to go back and interview staff that actually performed the process to make sure that what you think they are doing is what they’re doing. I was very surprised when I learned that our Accounts Payable team had begun scanning invoices and accepting that for payment as opposed to requiring original invoices. And because they’d started using scanned invoices, I considered that a control weakness, and so I refocused what I plan on testing more on the payment and invoicing side of the Accounts Payable process. That many of the vendors that the county was paying did not have physical addresses, that is an actual location that you could drive to, but they had PO boxes and now, because Monitor identified that and I looked for solutions, we are now requiring all of our vendors to provide a physical address as well as proof of their existence before we actually accept them as a vendor for payment. I would recommend this system by telling people that CaseWare Monitor is a system we use at the county to help reduce risk and also to deter and limit our employees from stealing money from the county. In addition, CaseWare Monitor has helped us identify significant areas where we can improve our processes. I would definitely recommend CaseWare Monitor to both business and government entities. Are you aligned with your researchers? Join us as we explore the data demonstrating how Content Diversity impacts researcher outcomes, how institutions can overcome barriers to providing this, and hear about some real examples and applications for Black history research. Comprehensive humanities research requires content diversity… and a very high percentage of faculty assignments rely on non-journal content. One of the reasons is because primary sources, combined with secondary sources such as ebooks, enable researchers to develop critical thinking skills by examining evidence, identifying questions, and drawing conclusions. The result? Improved research and teaching outcomes. See how you can be the source of more!

The Future of Computational Journalism
Data science and algorithms are reshaping how the news is discovered and reported At a recent event bringing together voices from the School of Engineering and the School of Humanities and Sciences, two Stanford professors engaged in a moderated discussion about the evolving field of computational journalism. Jay Hamilton, the Hearst Professor of Communication and director of the Journalism Program, and Maneesh Agrawala, professor of computer science and director of the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, shared their complementary perspectives on the many questions facing journalism today and where they might lead tomorrow. The conversation centered on how converging social currents and disruptive technologies have roiled newsrooms on the local, national and international levels. Computational journalism, Hamilton said, can refer to the set of tools that journalists use to discover, tell or distribute stories. But it’s also “reporting by, through and about algorithms.” The Associated Press, for example, writes about 4,000 stories by algorithm each time companies’ quarterly earnings reports come out — a massive increase from the 300 or so companies that can be covered by human reporters. In addition to such computer-assisted reporting, Agrawala spoke about how computers can be used to synthesize audio and video stories and create visualizations that provide critical context for data. The two professors also spoke about the great need for journalists to find ways to hold algorithms — like the ones that curate our newsfeeds or influence public policies — accountable. “One of the questions that we face as a society is understanding some of the algorithms that are delivering information to us,” Agrawala said. Hamilton agreed, adding that the biggest problem he sees facing journalism right now are the stories that get missed due to the collapse of the business models of local newspapers. “If you look across the country, there are city councils that don’t have a reporter covering them, there are school boards voting and making decisions and nobody is watching. So I think that’s something where computational journalism can really make an impact,” he said. “If you have a strong interest in engineering and data, try to help us figure out the stories that go untold, especially at the local level.”
Kate Hennessy - Repatriation, Digital Media, and Culture in the Virtual Museum
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS). Many Canadian First Nations and Aboriginal organizations are using digital media to revitalize their languages and assert control over the representation of their cultures. At the same time, museums, academic institutions, and individuals are digitizing their ethnographic collections to make them accessible to originating communities. In this presentation I will explore how the term "virtual repatriation" is being applied to the digitization and return of heritage to Aboriginal communities, and draw attention to the opportunities, challenges, and critiques associated with digitization, circulation, and remix of Aboriginal cultural heritage. I will discuss recent projects including the collaborative production of a Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit with the Doig River First Nation, a Dane-zaa community in northeastern British Columbia, and a current collaborative production of a virtual exhibit with members of the Inuvialuit community in the western Arctic and curators at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. I will show that while access to cultural heritage in digital collections can facilitate the articulation of intellectual property rights to digital cultural heritage----including the right to restrict circulation----it also amplifies the difficulty of enforcing those rights. Kate Hennessy is an Assistant Professor specializing in Media at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT). She has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia and an MA in the Anthropology of Media from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. As the director of the Making Culture Lab at SIAT, her research explores the role of digital technology in the documentation and safeguarding of cultural heritage, and in the mediation of culture, history, objects, and subjects in new forms. Her video and multimedia works investigate documentary methodologies to address Indigenous and settler histories of place and space. She is a founding member of the Ethnographic Terminalia Curatorial Collective, an international group exploring the borders of anthropological, curatorial, and artistic practice (http://ethnographicterminalia.org). As assistant editor of the journal Visual Anthropology Review, she designed its first multimedia volume. Her work has been published in journals such as American Indian Quarterly, Museum Anthropology Review, and Visual Anthropology Review. She was a Trudeau Foundation Scholar from 2006-2010, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholar from 2005-2009, a Canadian Polar Commission Scholar in 2006-2007, and a Commonwealth Scholar in 2001-2002.

Geospatial Forum: Dr. Falk Huettmann
Speaker: Dr. Falk Huettmann | Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology, Institute of Arctic Biology | University of Alaska Fairbanks Abstract: Expert-based science is widely on the decline when it comes to computing- and data-based inference worldwide for land- and seascapes as well as the atmosphere. The status of associated biodiversity and its conservation is equally in a crisis-state. In this presentation I will show how open access to data––including citizen science––has provided a fundamentally different playing field for institutions, research, agencies and (global) governance. Secondly, I will show how ‘Big Data’ mining using machine learning algorithms, e.g. based on open source as well as high-performance commercial tools, provide a superior analytical platform for statistical analysis and real-world progress. I will present in-depth examples from the polar regions (Arctic, Antarctic and Hindu-Kush Himalaya) as well as from the tropics (Central America and Papua New Guinea), the oceans and the atmosphere for conservation applications. All of these examples experienced a profile of hindrance, lack of recognition, and constraints found in the century-old science model that is currently applied but still awaiting new ethics and concepts for unleashing the full power of computers in a good way for the wider public good.
