Middle East Matters: The lethal legacy of landmines in Iraq

Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN According to the United Nations, Iraq is the fifth most mined country in the world, with 59 landmines per square mile. One organisation, Nadia's Initiative, is pushing for the removal of the explosives and booby traps in Sinjar province, a region located on the Turkish-Iraqi border. We speak to the foundation's co-executive director, Elizabeth Schaeffer-Brown, for more on the demining operations. Back in 2015, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was in trouble, with his forces losing ground. But now Syria's regime - backed by long-standing allies Russia, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah - is getting a tighter grip over the territory that it had lost to rebels. And in the eyes of the international community, Assad has emerged somewhat victorious, as there's no viable alternative to his rule. Today, Syria has regained over 90 percent of its territory from the Islamic State group, but has been left littered with unexploded booby traps. For some of the civilians returning to their homes, tragedy awaits. http://www.france24.com/en/taxonomy/emission/18024 Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

The soldiers died while they were attempting to destroy two Russian-made SA-3 ground-to-air missiles with a controlled explosion at a munitions collection point about five kilometres (three miles) from the German military's base in Kabul. Their deaths are the first among the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) since its arrival in the Afghan capital in December to maintain order following the ouster of the hard-line Taliban regime. VOICE-OVER: 0003 The five international peacekeepers - two Germans and three Danes - were killed here at this munitions collection point about three miles east of Kabul. 0012 The soldiers died as they were attempting to destroy two Russian-made ground-to-air missiles in a controlled explosion. 0019 Another five German and three Danish peacekeepers were injured in the blast. 0024 The area where the explosion occurred has been cordoned off and Danish and German forensic specialists are due to survey the site on Friday. 0032 Outside the German military's base in the Afghan capital the flags were flying at half mast. 0038 German peacekeepers will hold a minutes silence here in honour of the soldiers who died. 0043 The deaths were the first in the International Security Assistance Force. 0048 UPSOUND Close up mine sweeping device 0053 On Wednesday - the day the soldier's died - ISAF troops and locals took part in a demining operation. 0059 A team of British and French soldiers supervised the demining on the road between Kabul and Bagram. 0105 Some mines were found along the roadside, although a search of a bridge turned up nothing. 0111 (SOUNDBITE (English) Gary Arnold, British ISAF "We're just looking at the bridge. Fighting Rages on in Syria's Aleppo

02:03
Another heavy conflict broke out between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters early on Wednesday, according to local media. Fierce fighting has raged on between the Syrian army and opposition forces over the past few days in the northern city of Aleppo, the country's second-largest city. The latest scuffle broke out after the Syrian army and its allied militia forces launched a counteroffensive against opposition fighters early last week. Footage exclusively obtained by China Central Television (CCTV) showed intense clashes between government allies and opposition forces taking place in southern Aleppo last week. The fighting in Aleppo has been the worst since a partial ceasefire came into effect in late February and has threatened to completely derail the agreement, which has generally seen a reduced level of violence across Syria. Assignment Asia: Thailand Landmines

10:58
The Thai-Cambodian border is said to be the world’s largest landmine field. From the 1970s to the 1990s, thousands of mines were planted by warring military and insurgent groups. Many remain today. Martin Lowe followed the Thailand Mine Action Center (TMAC) as they conducted mine-clearance operations and spoke to them about their job hazards. He also found victims of mine explosions which include not just human victims maimed and shunned by society, but also elephants who suffered from severe injuries. "The rise of [IS] may prompt al-Qaeda to do something to show that it is still relevant," he said. Suspects arrested On Friday, Spain's interior ministry said Spanish and Moroccan police had arrested nine people suspected of belonging to a militant cell linked to the IS group. A statement from the ministry said the suspects belonged to a group based in the Spanish enclave of Melilla, on the northern coast of Africa, and the neighbouring town of Nador, in Morocco. One of those arrested is reported to be Spanish; the rest are Moroccan nationals. Earlier this week, the UN Security Council adopted a binding resolution compelling states to prevent their nationals from joining jihadists in Iraq and Syria. The US military released footage of air strikes on IS-controlled oil refineries in eastern Syria on Thursday, carried out by US, Saudi and UAE aircraft. Sales of smuggled crude oil have helped finance the jihadists' offensive in both countries. Three new strikes targeting IS positions in Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria were confirmed by the US on Friday morning. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict in Syria, said the new strikes caused casualties but the numbers were unclear. US military footage shows a strike on the Jeribe refinery in eastern Syria Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said the purpose of Thursday's strikes was "not necessarily to kill militants" but to destroy the oil facilities, which were funding IS through the black market. He said the strikes had been effective but not yet decisive, adding that IS militants "still have financing at their fingertips". He said it was too soon to talk of "winning" against IS, adding that they still "have plenty of weapons and vehicles and the ability to move around". UK votes on action The US says more than 40 countries have offered to join the anti-IS coalition. The Danish government announced on Friday it would be joining the military operations against IS - but only in Iraq. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said the move needed to be approved in a vote in Denmark's parliament, but said it was considered a formality. No date was given for the vote. She told reporters the deployment would consist of seven F-16 fighter jets - four operational planes and three in reserve - along with 250 pilots and support staff. MPs in the UK are currently debating joining the air strikes on IS in Iraq. Jump media playerMedia player helpOut of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue. Yolande Knell spoke to displaced Iraqis in Erbil's Baharka refugee camp The office of Prime Minister David Cameron said UK forces could legally join the bombing of targets in Iraq after the Iraqi minister of foreign affairs wrote to the UN seeking international assistance. Mr Cameron told the UN on Wednesday IS was an "evil against which the whole world must unite". The Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, says his government will decide in the coming days whether to join the air strikes in Iraq and Syria. Mr Abbott said it was in Australia's interest to play its part in what he called the fight "against the murderous death cult".

We Joined The Marines Trying To Defeat The Strongest Taliban Army Yet (HBO)

11:12
President Trump's new Afghanistan strategy will see up to 4,000 additional troops deployed to fight the deadliest Taliban army to date in the now 16-year-old conflict. But very few of them will see ground combat. That's because the war is being fought mainly by Afghan soldiers on the ground, supported by U.S. airpower in the form of drones or F-16s. VICE NEWS spent time with U.S. and Afghan forces as they try to beat back a Taliban resurgence that's seen the group now control or contest more territory in Afghanistan than at any time since the beginning of the war. We accompanied an Afghan-led counter-insurgency operation deep into Helmand province, where local forces fight day and night to push the Taliban back using heavy artillery and mine-clearance teams that dig out IEDs with their bare hands. As top U.S. officials laud recent results on the battlefield, Afghan soldiers say the Taliban they’re fighting is stronger now than they’ve been in years. Islamic State (ISIL) militants are believed to have kidnapped 344 Syrian workers and employees from a cement factory northeast of Damascus on Wednesday.

Breaking News, 10th of July, 2018

President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko, after the negotiations with the head of the European Council Donald Tusk and the chairman of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, said that the only way to resolve the conflict on the territory of the Donbass is to seal the border with Russia. "The Kremlin must accept the deployment of a multinational peacekeeping operation under the leadership of the United Nations throughout the temporarily occupied territory of the Donbass, including the border with Russia" - Poroshenko added. In the DPR, over the past day, the Ukrainian troops violated the ceasefire 5 times, firing 85 shells at the front-line areas of the Republic. The northern parts of Donetsk, the outer areas of Gorlovka, and the southern villages of Leninskoye and Sakhanka were under fire. Two houses in Gorlovka received damage as a result of shelling. According to a bill that was delivered to the US Congress - the Secretary of State, the Minister of Finances and the Director of the National Intelligence of the United States must make reports related to the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. The bill announced that the construction of the "Nord Stream-2" will increase European dependence on Russian gas, and it will destabilize the government of Ukraine if the country will lose the revenue from gas transit due to the existence of the Nord Stream-2, RT reports. In this regard, it is noted that the US should continue to oppose the construction of the "Nord Stream-2" in Europe, and take "diplomatic measures" to suppress such projects. Reporters of ANNA NEWS report - Russian sapper teams are finishing their job in the liberated parts of Syria. Syrian groups of sappers will independently continue their work while using Russian demining inventory. At the same time, a memorandum on the cooperation between the Syria and the UN was signed. According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the country is making great efforts to demine its territory, but Syria still needs the help of the world community, including the UN. Denmark, as expected, did not issue a permit of laying pipes of the "Nord Stream-2" on its territorial waters. Copenhagen tried to change the process of issuing the permit by passing the case from the profile ministry to the Foreign Ministry, but this was done after receiving the application. Earlier, Denmark asked to lay pipes in its territorial waters in order to receive the payment for transit. However, under the American pressure, the decision was changed. Ukraine became a military testing ground for the old weapons of the Western countries, according to the statement of military engineers who reported that the American ATGM Javelin proved to be prone to failure during the field tests. As it turned out, the missiles have passed their expiration date, even though their documents state otherwise. __________________________________________________ Агентство ANNA-News это волонтерский проект. U.S Army Special Forces | Green Berets

18:45
The United States Army Special Forces, is a special operations force tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism. Other duties include combat search and rescue (CSAR), counter-narcotics, counter-proliferation, hostage rescue, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian demining, information operations, peacekeeping, psychological operations, security assistance, and manhunts; other components of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) or other U.S. government activities may also specialize in these secondary areas. Special Forces are divided into five active duty and two Army National Guard, Special Forces groups. Each Special Forces Group (SFG) has a specific regional focus. The Special Forces soldiers assigned to these groups receive intensive language and cultural training for countries within their regional area of responsibility (AOR). Due to the increased need for Special Forces soldiers in the War on Terror, all Groups—including those of the National Guard (19th and 20th SFGs)—have been deployed outside of their areas of operation (AOs), particularly to Iraq and Afghanistan. Cluster bomb explosion wounds two members of intl land mine team

Various of injured person being wheeled along on stretcher 5. Various of another person being treated by hospital staff 6. Injured person being wheeled along on hospital bed 7. Wide of hospital sign STORYLINE: A cluster bomb from the Hezbollah-Israel war in southern Lebanon exploded on Friday wounding two members of an international team of land mine clearing experts, Lebanese security officials said. The two experts' legs were wounded, and they were rushed to the government hospital in the southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun where their conditions were described as serious. The explosion took place in a field near the village of Deir Mimas south of Marjayoun and three kilometres (two miles) west of the Israeli border. The wounded land mine clearing experts were identified by the security officials as David Aldies, from United Kingdom, and Damir Brasic, from Bosnia. Their hometowns were not given. The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the media. The two are members of the British-based Mine Advisory Group, which has been working in southern Lebanon since the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area in May 2004 after 18-years of occupation. The security officials said Aldies and Brasic ran into the field after a herd of goats that had strayed into it detonated a cluster bomb and they themselves stepped on another one. The United Nations and human rights groups have accused Israel of firing as many as four (m) million cluster bombs into Lebanon during its war with Hezbollah this summer that ended in a UN-brokered cease-fire on August 14. UN demining experts say up to one (m) million cluster bombs failed to explode and continue to threaten civilians. At least 24 people have died in cluster bomb explosions in Lebanon since the war ended. Full shot of entrance to Cambodian Mine Action Centre in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia LEAD IN: A new litter of puppies born in Cambodia are the first mine-clearing dogs to be bred in Southeast Asia. Asian dogs are considered temperamentally unsuited to mine-clearing, so fully trained dogs are usually imported, mostly from Europe. But there are hopes that could soon change, if Cambodia's domestic breeding programme is a success And that will save time, money and lives. STORYLINE: Cute as they are, these puppies are being prepared for a deadly serious purpose. They are being trained to sniff out the explosive commonly known as TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) so they can find hidden landmines and unexploded bombs. Cambodia is littered with tons of unexploded munitions left over from decades of war. The Landmine Monitor report 2007 says that in Cambodia between 2006-2006 there were 61 fatalities, of which 12 were children, and further 389 casualties, of which 128 were children. The litter of ten puppies were born at the end of March 2008. Mass grave discovered near recaptured Syrian town of Palmyra

01:11
The Syrian army says it has found a mass grave containing about 40 bodies near the city of Palmyra, recently recaptured from ISIL fighters. The grave is said to contain many women and children and some had been beheaded. This on the day it was reported that al-Qaida’s Syrian branch and other insurgents captured a strategic village from government forces south of Aleppo. Meanwhile, the US has confirmed that it is training a number of rebels to fight ISIL in Syria. “Dozens of people are now being trained. These are individuals as opposed to units,” said Colonel Steve Warren, Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesman. “And so, what this is, is pull some individuals out of units, vet them, give them some training, give them some capability, and then reinsert them back into the battle field.” There’s also further pressure on ISIL in Iraq, with the US-led coalition releasing images of the ISIL headquarters in the city of Mosul recently being hit by airstrikes.

Islamic State Doubles Size in Libya

00:48
a United States general stated Thursday that the number of Islamic State fighters in Libya has roughly doubled over the last 18 months. Now tallied between 4,000 and 6,000 fighters, General David Rodriguez added they are mainly situated in the port of Sirte while some have moved east into Benghazi. For months U.S. officials have warned about the rise of ISIS in Libya, with worries that the terrorist group could seize that country's oil reserves and wealth. In February, Secretary of State John Kerry stressed the importance of Libya's new unity government's efforts to keep the terrorists at bay. http://feeds.nbcnews.com/c/35002/f/663303/s/4ecafe72/sc/7/l/0L0Snbcnews0N0Cstoryline0Cisis0Eterror0Cnumber0Eisis0Efighters0Elibya0Ehas0Edoubled0En552476/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

SOUNDBITE (German) Frank Pfluger, media staff officer for International Security Assistance Force (ISAF): "It began in exactly the same way (as other patrols). It was already the three thousandth patrol we have carried out this year, but there are still more roads that we have to clear. First of all, our mine-clearance team comes with us and checks to see if there are mines on the road, then the first patrols go through. But in any operation like this there is a certain risk involved." 10. Various, vehicles and troops during ceremony 11. SOUNDBITE (German) Frank Pfluger, media staff officer for International Security Assistance Force (ISAF): "On Thursday, just after 1300 hours, Afghan time, one of our teams was on the road in the southern part of our district, about 15 kilometres south of our headquarters. Their job was to measure out a road. The second vehicle was behind the first one, and the second vehicle hit the mine with one of its rear wheels." 12. Coffin being driven away on back of truck STORYLINE: Several hundred peacekeepers in the Afghan capital, Kabul, held a sombre memorial ceremony on Saturday for a German soldier killed in a land mine blast last week. There are roughly two thousand German troops in the 29-nation International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) that patrols Kabul. As peacekeepers lined a road inside the main German base, in the east of the city, a truck with the soldier's coffin drove slowly past. German Major Gunther Bender said the body would be flown to Germany later on Saturday. Thursday's mine explosion killed German peacekeeper Corporal Stefan Kamins and wounded another soldier. The peacekeepers were on a routine patrol south of the capital. A spokesman for the multi-national force said there was no reason to believe the explosion was part of an attack against ISAF. Media staff officer Frank Pfluger said the patrol was like thousands of others that peacekeepers have carried out, but that in all operations there is an element of risk. Afghanistan, struggling to recover from decades of warfare, is among the most heavily mined nations on earth. The incident followed a plane crash on Monday in Turkey in which 62 peacekeepers from Spain died as they returned home after a four-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. About five thousand peacekeepers are in Afghanistan's capital to help maintain order and about 15 have died while on duty there. Germany and the Netherlands are in joint command of the force, but NATO is scheduled to take control in August. Reading, listening and speaking practice 9. Landmines in Myanmar

06:21
Reading, listening and speaking practice 9. Landmines in Myanmar Reading article below. Click on ‘more’ and then ‘transcript’ if you cannot understand anything I say. For details of my face to face and online courses email me [email protected] Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ieltstutorBangkokNoi/ Instructions. Combining the reading and audio file you can practice your reading, listening, speaking and also learn about current issues/events. Firstly, study the reading article below; then listen to the audio. The vocabulary in the reading can be very difficult; so please use Google to check meanings. Generally, reading should be at a higher language level than listening/speaking; so my audio you will find much easier than the reading. The audio file is related to the reading. In it I will ask you questions; when you hear a question pause the audio and try to speak out aloud your own answer; then listen to my answer. Don't speak only 1 or 2 words; create long sentences; or better still, several sentences. Remember, in exams you will get far higher marks for more detail in your answers. You will need to use your own common sense and experience for some answers. Try not to use the words in the text, construct your own sentences. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Reading Article. Landmines in Myanmar Politically explosive The failure to clear landmines casts doubt on Myanmar’s peace processes Jul 13th 2013 Giant steps for a small boy IN A clean, spacious and well-aired room, two young boys are learning to walk again using their new prosthetic legs. The Hpa-an Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Centre in Kayin (or Karen) state is the only clinic of its kind in Myanmar. Financed almost entirely by the International Committee of the Red Cross (without any help from the state), the centre has fitted some 7,000 prosthetic limbs since its opening in 2003. Around two-thirds of those have gone to the victims of landmines. South-eastern Myanmar is one of the most mine-ridden regions in the world. Geneva Call, a Swiss NGO, reckons that over 5m Burmese people live in areas contaminated by landmines, most of which are concentrated on the long border with Thailand (see map). This comes as a result of decades of conflict between armed ethnic groups, struggling for autonomy, and the tatmadaw, the government’s armed forces. According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), the Burmese government has the shameful distinction of being the only state in the world to have scattered landmines every year since the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, which the country has not signed. In 2012 the only other government still laying landmines was Syria’s. In Myanmar landmines—“sleeping soldiers”—carry little stigma with the army or its opponents. “They are still viewed very much as a military asset rather than a humanitarian issue,” says a director at one Western anti-mine lobby. And it is not just the ethnic groups and the tatmadaw who view landmines that way; civilians have also frequently used them as a means of protecting their business or property. Since 1999 over 3,200 casualties are reported to have been caused by mines; the real figure is assumed to be far higher. Part of the reason why the statistics are murky is that until February 2012, when Thein Sein, the president, requested international help with clearing mines, the government had never publicly acknowledged that the country had a landmine problem at all. “Until then you couldn’t even talk about mine victims,” says Bjarne Ussing of DanChurchAid, a Danish NGO that provides education about the risks of mines as well as assistance to survivors. De-mining was out of the question. But all that is changing as Myanmar opens up. In September an agreement was signed with Norwegian People’s Aid, another NGO, to clear mines in five of the most highly contaminated states. In November the Burmese government opened the EU-financed Myanmar Peace Centre in Yangon and announced that a mine-action centre would be one of its central components. In April Myanmar held its very first mine-awareness day, and in May the ICBL was able to make its first official visit to the country. Progress is painfully slow. Though the government said it was reviewing its stance on the Mine Ban Treaty almost a year ago, it has moved no further towards signing it. For now, the mine-action centre is just a rather dilapidated building without staff or offices. No de-mining by humanitarian groups, nor any proper surveying, has yet taken place. This is mainly because, despite Mr Thein Sein’s reform programme and the signing of several new ceasefire agreements since January 2012, ethnic groups lack confidence in the government and in the prospects for peace. “We can

NGO reports sharp increase in landmine casualties

00:59
A nongovernmental organization says the number of people killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance rose sharply last year, to more than 6,000. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines released its annual report on Tuesday in Switzerland, where it is headquartered. The group began providing data in 1999. The report says 6,461 people were killed or wounded by landmines and other explosive remnants of war in 2015, up 75 percent from the previous year. It says there were 18 victims a day on average, and 38 percent were children. The report attributes the sharp rise in casualties to conflicts in Syria, Yemen, and other troubled countries. It says most of the landlines were laid by insurgents and terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State militant group. The international community is cutting back financial support for landmine removal and victim assistance. The group warns it may not be able to continue providing sufficient aid to victims. The Ottawa Convention banning the use, stockpiling and production of antipersonnel mines went into effect in 1999. But countries with large stockpiles have yet to join it. They include the United States, Russia, China, India and Pakistan.
