If you are setting up a reef tank, then you need to know the dangers of adding fish straight into your tank. Many reefers are now recommending the transfer method. You set up two Q.T tanks and transfer the fish between the two tanks every 3 days. Cleaning out the unused tank every time, with vinegar or mild bleach. You should transfer the fish al least 4 times. It does work 100% but can stress the fish out. There is no 100% way to remove ich, with out stressing the fish out which ever method you use. Marine velvet is another parasite with life cycle to ich. It looks like a velvety layer covering the lower part of the fish, and is harder to spot than ich. Normally the first thing you see is dead fish. It can't be treated with hyposalinity, but can be treated with copper. Although not as common as ich. all the ich myths can be applied to velvet. Leaving your reef tank free of fish for 4-8 weeks is the only way to solve it. Fresh water dips can be given to fish. You need to use R.O.D.I water, and match the temperature and match the P.H using a buffer. You should use a large container, because most fish pee and poo, very quickly in fresh water. The fish should be left in the water for 3-5 minuets, before placing in a reef tank or quarantine tank. This will only how ever stop the free swimming parasites from entering your tank. Any ich in the gills or flesh will not be affected, so you could still transfer the ich to your tank. Just by transferring fish from one tank to another is a great way of reducing the amount of ich, so a quarantine is a great help in this resect.

One thing that confused me when I first started out was that ich was "always" in your tank. So in theory you could have an outbreak at any time. Really is that it may go unnoticed until a fish gets stressed, then its everywhere. Hope this helps anybody who felt the way I did initially. This was just an off the cuff rant about a myth I read online when I first started fish keeping. Want to help others learn from my experience. Thanks for watching and reading all this. This tang looked healthy when I picked up. No sign of ich. Three days later this is what it looks like. The ich parasite was present inside of the fish. The white spots is the skins reaction to the parasite. It will look like this for 3-7 days after which if it survives the parasite will leave the fish to reproduce. Since the waters salinity is 1.009 the parasite will not be able to reproduce and die effectively making the fish parasite free. 30 days past the last spot I will begin raising salinity and transfer it to my display tank. I have done this with all my fish keeping my reef tank parasite free.
