The Famous Shelf Road between Cripple Creek and Canon City in Colorado

05:13
On a recent weekend trip to Colorado, we used our Garmin GPS to get from Cripple Creek to Canon City. The route took us over (what we found out later) was the famed Shelf Road. This road was built in the 1890's to accommodate stagecoaches. One lane, narrow, with a nice 300 foot drop off the side!

Lower Gold Camp Road Scenic Route - Colorado Springs, Colorado

02:11
For the full trail guide please visit: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/2935-lower-gold-camp-road Lower Gold Camp Road is a gorgeous route that travels through a beautiful area close to Colorado Springs that is rich in scenery and railroad history. As travelers drive through this beautiful area, make sure to stop and visit Helen Hunt Falls, located approximately 200 yards southeast of the southern trailhead. The area is the location of many scenic hiking and mountain biking trails. The route of Lower Gold Camp Road traverses 2.5 miles of what was once the location of the Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek District Railway Company's railroad line connecting the city of Colorado Springs with the gold fields of Cripple Creek and Victor. The rail line originally opened for steam locomotive service April 8, 1901 and was advertised as the shortest possible route to the gold fields. Soon after it was given the name "The Short Line." After World War I the Short Line was forced sold as a result of dwindling income from the passenger and freight service. It was purchased by a Colorado Springs capitalist named W.D.Corley who in 1926, opened the route as a toll road for vehicle travel and renamed it the Corley Mountain Highway. It was renamed The Gold Camp Road in 1939 and today is maintained for free, public travel by the US Forest Service, Teller County, and El Paso County. Phantom Canyon Backroad Drive - Cañon City, CO

03:05
For the full trail guide please visit: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/415-phantom-canyon Phantom Canyon Road is an old railroad grade that once connected the gold-mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor to Florence. It offers some of the most scenic sections of the Gold Belt Scenic Byway. Phantom Canyon Rd is dotted with ghost towns like Adelaide, Wilbur, and Alta Vista. The two iconic tunnels on this road date back to 1895, while the red steel bridge dates back to 1897. It is possible to access a less-traveled hiking trail to the Beaver Creek State Wildlife Area from this bridge. Phantom Canyon offers many camping sites along Eightmile Creek, as well as two public restroom and picnic areas. This is a gorgeous, easy drive for all types of vehicles when done in dry weather, but parts of it can turn treacherous with heavy rain and snow. Boulder to Black Hawk Colorado (Casino town) Road Tour

21:08
Driving Boulder's scenic Colorado 93 highway to Black Hawk Colorado. This is an easy and very scenic drive one hour drive. Even if you don't gamble, it's worth a quick trip. Black Hawk Colorado's least populated City. It started out as a Gold mining town during the Pike's peak gold rush days. Buffalo Bill once lived in Black Hawk during the gold rush days. Black Hawk started to dwindle in the 20th century until they opened their first casino in 1991. They current have 18 casinos operating in Black Hawk today. Black Hawk is also a quick trip from Denver and there seems to be plenty of charter/tour buses taking people to and from near by towns. If you're not into casino's, this route through the gulch is dotted with places used for rafting. Driving the Phantom Canyon Road

09:07
See http://www.goldbeltbyway.com/phantom-canyon-road The road was laid on the steep, winding right-of-way of a former rail line that served the mountain mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek, CO. Found while studying the map, this was an alternate route we chose to get from Cañon City to the Pike's Peak area (Woodland Park). Driven in a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT, a fairly low-clearance vehicle, anything lower (or with a paint-job you are obsessive about) would have been a problem if this mostly-dirt road had any significant erosion damage. Alas it had only minor tread issues as it appeared the road had been bladed in places recently in response to downpours the area had leading up to our visit.

A drive through Jellystone Park near Estes Park, Colorado

02:54
I believe the official name of this campground is, "Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park of Estes Campground" - the name is derived from a family cartoon character from the 1960s that was created by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The cartoon name, itself, is a play on the popular (and real!) National Park called Yellowstone. In fact, because of the cartoon's huge popularity many children would often mistakenly refer to the real park, Yellowstone, with the cartoon's park name of "Jellystone." Wahatoya (Breasts of the Earth)

10:28
These remarkable mountains were formed when a basalt magma bullet came up from deep within the earth and struck a brittle rhyolite cap, shattering it like glass, and raising it up into a dome. The hard basalt filled the cracks, and as erosion wears away the softer rhyolite, the basalt dikes remain- up to 200 feet tall, ten to twenty feet thick, like a system of Great China Walls radiating out from the peaks in all directions for many miles. . On the east slope of East Spanish Peak are large coal seams exposed by orogeny of these peaks, and was Ludlow, site of the Ludlow Massacre that led to worker reforms and creation of unions to protect worker rights. The Ludlow Massacre was an attack by the Colorado National Guard and Colorado Fuel & Iron Company camp guards on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families at Ludlow, Colorado, on April 20, 1914. 26 people, including miners' wives and children, were killed. The chief owner of the mine, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was widely criticized for the incident. The massacre, the culmination of a bloody widespread strike against Colorado coal mines, resulted in the violent deaths of two women and eleven children, asphyxiated and burned to death under a single tent. The deaths occurred after a daylong fight between militia and camp guards against striking workers. Ludlow was the deadliest single incident in the southern Colorado Coal Strike, which lasted from September 1913 through December 1914. The strike was organized by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) against coal mining companies in Colorado. The three largest companies involved were the Rockefeller family-owned Colorado Fuel & Iron Company (CF&I), the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company(RMF), and the Victor-American Fuel Company (VAF). In retaliation for Ludlow, the miners armed themselves and attacked dozens of mines over the next ten days, destroying property and engaging in several skirmishes with the Colorado National Guard along a 40-mile front from Trinidad to Walsenburg. The entire strike would cost 199 lives. Thomas G. Andrews described it as the "deadliest strike in the history of the United States". The Ludlow Massacre was a watershed moment in American labor relations. Historian Howard Zinn described the Ludlow Massacre as "the culminating act of perhaps the most violent struggle between corporate power and laboring men in American history".The Ludlow Tent Colony Site was designated a National Historic Landmark on January 16, 2009, and dedicated on June 28, 2009. Modern archeological investigation largely supports the strikers' reports of the event, different from the Rockefeller ownership account. . JD Rockerfeller was a despot 1%er, and before the republicans drag us back into that kind of America, we will resist! Unfortunately the 1% discovered the world has a huge supply of cheap labor, for which they circumvented the market of American workers. In those countries, they have implemented JD Rockefeller-type work demands, which will inevitably lead to worker resistance and revolt when those people have endured enough. Difference this time is the conflict may be international, and as widespread as their outsourcing is, that might be the next global conflict. Remember, that is what the GOP stand for. It is what the anti-union boors argue for, rolling on the floor laughing their fat asses off in amusement. Wahatoya is a Ute (and many other tribes) word meaning "Breasts of the Earth." To the Native Americans, these mountains were sacred. The Spanish spell it Huajatolla.

Calling All Teens Challenge: Trails 4 Teens Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

01:17
A new initiative at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Colorado to engage teens, the future caretakers of our national parks. Interested teens can pick up their hiking contest log sheet at the visitor center front desk. The National Park Service, the Coalition of the Upper South Platte, and the Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds are challenging teens to hike all 14 miles of trails at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. "The purpose of the 'Trails 4 Teens' program is to help connect youth to Florissant Fossil Beds through fun, engaging experiences on the parks 14 miles of trails," said Ranger Jeff Wolin. "Through working and playing on the trails the teens will be able to understand and appreciate Florissant Fossil Beds and our national parks and be moved to become the next stewards of our country's great treasures," Wolin said. The requirements to participate in the Trails 4 Teens program are: • Participants must be 13 - 19 years old. • Be able to come to the Monument during work hours between June 7 and September 28. Wolin believes in the benefits for those teens who join this new program. "The benefits for teens would be a chance to be with friends in a new place, a challenge that they can overcome and become healthier while they do it," he said. "It is also a chance to learn about a new career and new opportunities." "Our national parks belong to all of us," Wolin said. "Many adults realize this and take advantage of visiting parks, but teens are an underserved audience." "They represent the future caretakers of our national parks. National parks provide a place for teens to socialize with friends in a safe and healthy atmosphere and can provide challenges that engage teens such as hiking and other outdoor activities" Wolin said. Prizes and a recognition ceremony are planned at the end of the program. "All participants that complete the challenge will receive a t-shirt and be entered to win prizes," Wolin said. "We will have a recognition ceremony on National Public Lands Day which is September 28, 2014." Anyone 15 or younger is free to participate. Any participant 16 or older is $3.00 per person unless an adult with a pass accompanies them. About Trails 4 Teens Program: A new initiative at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument to engage teens. The Summer 2014 is a hiking challenge for teens. Other themes are planned for 2015 and beyond. The hiking contest is part of a grant that was awarded to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, the Coalition of the Upper South Platte and the Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds from the National Park Foundation and is part of a program called Active Trails. About the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument: Florissant Fossil Beds (http://www.nps.gov/flfo) is a great place to visit any time of year, although most visitation takes place late spring through early fall. We recommend all new visitors begin their adventure at the Visitor Center. There you can receive orientation information at the information desk and see the "Shadows of the Past" orientation film. In the visitor center you can explore exhibits and the bookstore. DIRECTIONS: Visitors traveling north/south on I-25: Exit at US 24 West, travel 35 miles to town of Florissant, then follow signs two miles south to the visitor center on Teller County 1. Visitors traveling east/west on US 24: Exit to the town of Florissant, then follow signs two miles south on Teller County 1 to the visitor center. Visitors traveling from the town of Cripple Creek: Follow Teller County Road 1 north for 16 miles. About the Coalition of the Upper South Platte: Since 1998 the Coalition for the Upper South Platte (CUSP) has worked to protect the 2,600-square-mile watershed that reaches from the Continental Divide to Strontia Springs Reservoir, southwest of Denver. The watershed is a recreational mecca with over 1.6 million acres of public lands; it provides municipal water for about three quarters of Colorado's residents; it is renowned for its "gold-medal" fishing streams; and it is home to numerous threatened and endangered species. About the Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds: The Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to assisting the National Park Service in preserving, protecting, and interpreting the natural and historical resources of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Steep Cliffs! 14260 feet Mt Evans Colorado Drive 1 of 17 GOING UP Compare with Pikes Peak

http://www.jrossvideo.com The highest paved road in the USA. Mount Evans Colorado USA. Prettier than Pikes Peak and NO DUST to spoil the tundra. However, most people will find that it is scarier to drive. The highest auto road in the USA - Mount Evans Colorado. It is prettier than Pikes Peak and NO DUST to spoil the tundra. However it is also scarier. Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m). The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs. Neighboring towns: Georgetown, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Golden, Brookvale, Highland Park, Evergreen, Conifer One of the three fourteeners visible from Denver, Mount Evans dominates the mountainous horizon west of the city. Its great sculpted eastern face greets the dawn each day, capturing the morning light. Much of the wilderness lies above timberline, and place names such as Sawtooth, Frozen Lake, and Abyss Lake offer a hint of the rugged glacial terrain that characterizes the area. Crawling up into the wilderness, but outside the circuitous boundary, a paved road runs to the top of Mount Evans, the highest paved road in America. Abyss Lake, surrounded by fabulous scenery, rests in a rock-rimmed gorge at 12,550 feet in the heart of the wilderness. You can reach it by hiking seven strenuous miles (one way) up a glacier-carved valley. The area's 14,000 foot peaks and proximity to Denver combine with the summit road to draw large numbers of visitors. Nevertheless, the Mount Evans Wilderness contains notable biological features, harboring not only alpine tundra, but arctic tundra as well. This is one of the few places south of the Arctic Circle, where such tundra is found. It differs from alpine tundra by virtue of its moisture, as it contains countless small pools of water. In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements. Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live around Mount Evans, and mountain goats are frequently seen from the summit road. The vast expanses of tundra offer visitors numerous opportunities to spy more common critters, including ptarmigan and yellow-bellied marmots.
