The Brunner Mine was a coal mine on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. The Brunner Mine was one of several mines situated on the banks of the Grey River, at an area known as "Coal Gorge" between the townships of Stillwater and Taylorville. The town of Brunner (formerly Brunnerton) is nearby. Coal was discovered on the West Coast by Nelson surveyor Thomas Brunner "during the most arduous of his journeys in search of more agricultural land". The coal was of extremely high quality and it did not take long before it attracted interest. And, of course, "The West Coast had the added attraction of gold mining and it seems that the employment opportunity offered by coal mining was in the difficult economic times not one to be turned down". Brunner Mine disaster Main article: Brunner Mine disaster In March 1896 an explosion deep in the mine killed all 65 miners inside, and was labelled the worst mining disaster in New Zealand’s history. It seemed most likely that the explosion was caused by firedamp, a common hazard in coal mines, where a pocket of methane gas is accidentally ignited and explodes.

During earlier visits to Aretika, the villagers explained they cannot live off of fishery anymore. Due to the polluting effects of coal mining they were catching less and less fish and were forced to look into other jobs to make a living. Nowadays the ex-fishermen (and their wives) filter the coal debris from the river they used to fish in, and sell the collected coal to coal dealers. In this video Branton N. Sangma explains why he became a coal transporter. Every day he collects the coal debris from the villages bordering Simsang river, and takes it to the buyer upstream. www.whatifwechange.org

The Bagger 293 is a giant bucket-wheel excavator built in Germany in 1995. It requires a crew of five to operate and can move over 8.5 million cubic feet of earth per day. The Bagger 293 uses a large 70-foot rotating wheel at the end of a long arm. This wheel has a series of buckets attached, and as the wheel rotates the buckets pick up the earth and dump it onto a conveyor belt. The conveyor belts will transport the earth to other vehicles for removal to the dumping site. This Coal Mining company store was one of 4, that served as the store where all the miners would buy food supplies and whatever else they needed. Since the miners were only paid in what is called company "script" the only place they could buy goods was from these types of stores, needless to say the store could charge whatever they wanted and it boiled down to slave labor back in those days, this particular coal company also used hired gunmen similiar to pinkerton men to quell any possible uprisings by the miners and people were often killed if they talked of striking. There were several shootouts at this particular store and the bullet holes still remain at the front entrance of this store the last of its kind. There were also rumors that this store had what is known as a rape room where women were abused. There is also a story of a little girl that was mistakenly killed by the hired guns and that she is actually buried in the basement of this store. The store also had its own morgue and embalming room , when miners were killed in accidents or by other means they would make the coffins extra small and bend the bodies over all in order to spend less money in wood for the coffins. This location has many reasons that could cause paranormal activity and I believe I experienced some of that activity while there.Real ghost activity EVP ITC.

The children were playing in the Khairkut district when they accidentally triggered at mine that was planted at the road at around 3:00 p.m. Officials blame insurgents for planting the mine, although no specific group was named. The incident emphasizes what the United Nations says are hundreds of childrens who have been killed this year due to explosions or fighting between Afghan government forces and insurgents. According to the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, 231 children were killed and 529 were injured in Afghanistan in the first six months of this year. Improvised explosive devices, including mines used by insurgent groups were cited as the leading cause. The second-leading cause of such casualties was fighting between insurgents and Afghan forces.

While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. Tucked away on construction sites most people won’t ever see are dump trucks so large it’s hard to believe are real. On this episode we bring you the World’s largest dump truck. The BelAZ 75710 made by Belarusian company BelAZ is the world largest, highest payload capacity haul truck. The truck is built with a conventional two axle setup but has doubled wheels, four to an axle. It has 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel hydraulic steering, which is unusual. The truck is 30 feet or 9 meters tall with wheels taller than most people. The BelAz 75710 is powered by two 2,300 horsepower motors with a top speed of 40 mph or 64 kph. It was designed for work in giant mining operations. The truck itself weighs over 750,000 pounds or 340 000 kg, to put that into perspective the average midsize car weighs 3500 lbs or 1600 kg making this dump truck weigh the equivalent of the combined weight of 215 cars. When it comes to hauling, this beast can carry up to 992,000 pounds or 450000 kg of material. Now I’m sure you’re thinking of picking one up, it’ll cost you around 6 million dollars. Welcome to THE MAKING OF A NATION -- American history in VOA Special English. By 1933, America's labor unions had less than 3,000,000 members. But by the end of the 1930s, more than 10,500,000 American workers belonged to unions. New laws proposed by the Roosevelt administration made the labor growth possible. The National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 gave labor leaders the right to organize and represent workers. The Supreme Court ruled that the law was illegal. But another law, the Wagner Labor Relations Act of 1935, helped labor unions to increase their power. Most of the leaders of America's traditional labor unions were slow to understand their new power. They were conservative men. They represented workers with certain skills, such as wood workers or metal workers. They did little to organize workers with other kinds of skills. But a new group of labor leaders used the new laws to organize unions by industries, not by skills. They believed that workers would have much more power if they joined forces with other workers in the same factory to make common demands. These new leaders began to organize unions for the automobile industry, the steel industry, and other major industries. The leader of the new movement was the head of the mine workers, John L. Lewis. Lewis was a powerful leader with a strong body and strong opinions. He had begun to work in the coal mines at the age of 12. Lewis rose to become a powerful and successful leader of the mine workers. But he was concerned about workers in other industries as well. And he believed that most of the leaders in the American Federation of Labor were doing little to help them. For this reason, Lewis and the heads of several other unions formed their own group to organize unions by industry, not by skills. They called their group the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the CIO. And they tried immediately to gain members. The CIO successfully organized the workers in several major industries. But it succeeded only by hard work and struggle. The CIO's 1st big battle was against the giant automobile company, General Motors. Late in 1935, workers at several General Motors factories began a "sit-down" strike at their machines to demand better pay and working conditions. After 44 days, General Motors surrendered. It recognized that the automobile workers' union had the right to represent GM workers. And it agreed to negotiate a new work agreement. The struggle at the Ford Motor Company was more bitter. Ford company guards beat union organizers and workers. But the Ford company finally agreed to negotiate with the new union. The same story was true in the steel industry. But the new labor leaders succeeded in becoming the official representatives of steel workers throughout the country. By 1938, the C.I.O. had won its battle to organize major industries. In later years, it would join with the more traditional American Federation of Labor to form the organization that remains the most important labor group in America today, the AFL-CIO. President Roosevelt was not always an active supporter of organized labor. But neither was he a constant supporter of big business, like the 3 Republican Presidents before him. In fact, Roosevelt spoke out often against the dangers of big business in a democracy. This conservative opposition to Roosevelt grew steadily throughout 1935 and 36. Many Americans were honestly worried that Roosevelt's expansion of government was the 1st step to dictatorship. They feared that Roosevelt and the Democrats were trying to gain power as the Nazis did in Germany, the Fascists in Italy or the Communists in Russia. The Republican Party held its Presidential convention in the summer of 1936. The party delegates chose Alfred Landon to oppose Roosevelt for President. Mr. Landon was the governor of the farm state of Kansas. He was a successful oil producer with conservative business views. But he was open to some of the social reforms of Roosevelt's New Deal. Republicans hoped he would appeal to average Americans who supported mild reforms, but feared Roosevelt's social policies. The Democrats nominated Roosevelt and Vice President John Garner to serve a 2nd term. Franklin Roosevelt defeated Alfred Landon in the election of 1936 by one of the largest votes in the nation's history. Roosevelt won every state except Maine and Vermont. The huge election victory marked the high point of Roosevelt's popularity. In our next program, we will look at the many problems he faced in his 2nd administration.

The Silver Bridge over the Ohio River was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminium paint. It connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio. On December 15, 1967, the bridge collapsed during rush-hour, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and was poorly maintained. It was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge, completed in 1969. It was not at all unusual in the old days for mines to keep on working right after a fatal accident had occurred. These days, MSHA places a "red tag" on the mine and they can't re-open for production until the agency accident investigation has been completed (which may take a few days or more depending on the severity of the accident). Presumably when the Silver Bridge collapsed, the nearby Powhatan #3 mine kept right on working, which would have been considered disrespectful by the local people. David Allan Coe (born 1939) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved popularity in the 1970s and 1980s. After being sent to a reform school at the age of 9, he spent much of the next 20 years in correctional facilities. Coe received encouragement to begin writing songs from Screamin' Jay Hawkins, with whom he had spent time in prison. After the Internal Revenue Service seized his home in Key West, Florida, Coe lived in a cave in Tennessee, and later remarried and got back on his feet. This rarely heard song is from a demo album, which also featured "A Cold Lump Of Coal". "For the Soul and for the Mind: Demos of 1971-1974" was a reel of Coe's earliest demos as a staff songwriter for the late Pete Drake's Window Music publishing company. After Drake's death, his widow found the tape and passed it on to Coe. This song was requested by Tony Oppegard. In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers.
