Could Brexit cause an immigration crisis for tech firms?

09:43
So much of the Brexit debate has been dominated by unicorns - policies put forward by one side, dismissed as fantastical by the other. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) But it's not all about mythical creatures. 'Unicorn' is a term used to describe tech start-ups that have grown into billion-dollar companies. And one of the sector's leading investors has told this programme that Britain's success in creating unicorn companies could be ruined by tough post-Brexit immigration rules. ------- Watch more of our explainer series here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... Brexit: Britain still on the fence, but what about Germany? | DW News

07:43
British Prime Minister Theresa May is still battling to get the UK Parliament to approve her Brexit plan as she tries to renegotiate her deal with the EU. Lawmakers voted against a motion supporting her approach. The vote is non-binding, but it is likely to undermine EU leaders' confidence that May can win Parliament's support for any agreement. But people in Germany have never liked the idea, as the latest 'DeutschlandTrend' opinion poll from infratest dimap confirms. BREXIT - WATCH Jeremy Corbyn calling Prime Minister May "STUPID WOMAN"

22:19
00:34 Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has become embroiled in a sexism row after he appeared to call Theresa May a “stupid woman” following a fiery exchange at Prime Minister's Questions. Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn was accused of being a sexist and a misogynist today after appearing to call Theresa May a "stupid woman". The Labour boss was attacked by both Tory and Labour MPs after losing his rag with the PM during PMQs. Mrs May joked at the end of the pair's exchange today: "I've got some advice for the Right Honourable Gentleman - look behind you! "They are not impressed and neither is the country!" Mr Corbyn then shook his head and muttered "stupid woman" under his breath, as a lip-reader confirmed. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said at his outburst: "The mask slips. Jeremy Corbyn's abuse of the Prime Minister shows what a reactionary misogynist he is." And Labour's Jess Phillips said it was "sexist" and he "should apologise". Furious MPs raised the matter with the Commons Speaker just minutes later. Patrick McLoughlin fumed: "Would it not be appropriate for him to come back in the Chamber and apologise?" Politicians shouted "disgrace!" and "shame!", and Tory CCHQ boss Brandon Lewis demanded he apologise. He said: "Looks shocking on the film, unacceptable in any environment." Deaf drummer Evelyn Glennie told the BBC she was very certain he had said what was claimed. But Jeremy Corbyn's spokesman insisted this afternoon he WOULDN'T say sorry, saying he'd not said that.

But that’s what people living in Europe have had to deal with: their own nation’s bloated government and the super-national government of Europe, now known as the European Union. Bureaucracy times two! How’s that for a horror show? Well, actually, you’ve no idea. It’s worse than you think. Believe me—I know, because for seventeen years, I’ve represented South East England as a member of the European Parliament, the EU’s legislative body. I was also leader of the UK Independence Party, or UKIP, where I lead Britain’s efforts to leave the European Union. To their everlasting credit, that’s just what happened on June the 23rd, 2016: The United Kingdom left the European Union. The world knows it as “Brexit.” Brexit is a statement of national sovereignty. Don’t misunderstand me: I like nations. I like borders. I like the people that live within those borders making their own laws. But I don’t like it when faceless bureaucrats make laws for nations they don’t even live in. But that’s what they do in the European Union. Imagine a Belgian telling a Brit how much he can charge his customers—or the reverse. The EU bureaucrats do this in a myriad of different ways, all day, every day. It is a conspiracy of the elites. Who are those elites? Well, they’re a bunch of self-important, overpaid, social engineers with useless college degrees who have never done a proper day’s work in their lives and have no connection with ordinary, decent people. I’ll take the good sense of an Italian farmer or a French baker over the arid intellectualism of an EU bureaucrat any day. And I say these things not as an anti-European; I love Europe! It’s a fantastic, exciting, great continent: different peoples, languages, and cultures. But these peoples, with their languages and cultures, have effectively been hijacked by a giant, ever-expanding bureaucracy: the European Union. People will say, “but isn’t there a parliament, a European parliament, that represents the people of Europe?” Well, yes, but this body has got no real power; it can’t make its own laws. Rather, the power resides with the European Commission. They’re unelected and they can’t be removed, and that’s how absurd the whole thing is. The European Parliament meets in Brussels. At least, that’s what I thought when I was elected there. But once a month, do you know what happens? They load the contents of our offices and papers into big, plastic trunks, and they put those trunks on lorries, and they drive them nearly 400 miles down Europe’s motorways to a French city called Strasbourg where, for four days, the contents of our offices, and our papers, are put into a new office, and the parliament then sits there. Twelve times a year this back-and-forth happens, and this from an organization who say they want to reduce their level of carbon footprint! This, from an organization whose accounts have not been given a clean bill of health by the auditors for the last twenty years! This…a parliament? It’s more like a traveling circus. BREXIT: Watch emergency debate on UK-EU Brexit negotiations (full version, 3 hours)

03:00:16
All UK citizens will be sent information about how to prepare for a no-deal Brexit, as the government dramatically ramps up its contingency planning. Downing Street revealed the "public communications" will be released alongside a "general advertising campaign", with 101 days until the expected divorce date. The contingency planning includes reserving ferry space for supplies and putting 3,500 armed British forces personnel on standby to deal with any disruption. No 10 confirmed today that ministers would “ramp up” no-deal planning, and that the departments would be expected to make it their main priority. Citizens will be informed how to prepare through a “range of channels” that could include TV adverts and social media. Following an application from SNP Westminster Leader, Ian Blackford, the House of Commons Speaker granted an emergency debate on the current UK-EU Brexit negotiations. Jeremy Corbyn has become "the midwife of Brexit" by refusing to call a full no-confidence vote in the government, SNP Westminister leader Ian Blackford has said. Brexit secretary, Stephen Barclay, said the default option was for the UK to leave without any exit arrangement in place unless MPs backed the deal. “Parliament needs to back the deal because the consequence of not doing so is we risk the default of no-deal and a responsible government must prepare for that eventuality,” he said. “That is what we agreed at cabinet. That is what we are going to do.” The issues around no-deal planning were not solely financial but also related to decisions over whether to take civil servants off important domestic priorities, one cabinet minister said. “Do you take civil servants off the social care green paper, for example? That’s the choices in front of us,” the minister said. "The leader of the opposition is letting the government off the hook - he has it in his gift to bring a forward a no confidence motion that will test the will of the House and, crucially, will allow his party to move onto the issue of a People's Vote.

Parliament votes down May's Brexit strategy (live replay)

08:39:57
Theresa May was warned she has just 30 days to pass an EU deal or Parliament will delay Brexit amid a major Government revolt. The PM pleaded with MPs to “hold our nerve” and give her another two more weeks to toughen up her Brexit deal. Mrs May succeeded in staring down an initial Remain ministers’ revolt, and now looks set to win a Commons vote tomorrow to authorise the ongoing talks. But senior Tory and Labour backbenchers allied to set a new legally-binding deadline of mid-March for any EU agreement to be ratified. If one still isn’t by then, Labour MP Yvette Cooper and former Tory minister Sir Oliver Letwin unveiled a new bill to force the Government to apply for an extension to the Article 50 talks and delay Brexit – possibly by many months - if the Commons says so. The revolt will be mounted at the next showdown vote on February 27, which Mrs May agreed to yesterday as the price of talks continuing. It also emerged last night that Cabinet ministers are preparing to publicly back the senior rebels’ bid. And up to 20 Tory ministers will threaten to resign if they are denied a free vote on it – amounting to two devastating blows for the PM’s authority... BREXIT BEGINS: Are you watching, Brussels? Donald Trump announces HUGE Brexit trade boost

06:16
BREXIT BEGINS: Are you watching, Brussels? Donald Trump announces HUGE Brexit trade boost The US President announced that the special relationship will be “strengthened further” following a new mutual trade arrangement agreed by both countries worth at least at least £12.8billion a year for trans-Atlantic trade. He also significantly raised hopes of a wide-ranging free trade deal between the UK and US by insisting he wanted to see Trans-Atlantic business significantly increased. Theresa May's Brexit strategy defeated in vote

02:57
THERESA May has once again been humiliated over Brexit after Tory MPs pulled their support for her plans. The PM’s strategy was left in tatters on Valentine's Day after Brexiteers abstained on her motion, leaving it to be defeated by 303 votes to 258. But Tories argued that tonight's defeat wasn't binding and didn't actually mean anything, and she will continue to push ahead with her fight in Brussels for more concessions. Will MPs face choice between Brexit deal or delay?

13:06
There are 44 days to Brexit, if you believe Theresa May. But if you believe her Chief Brexit Negotiator dealing with Brussels, maybe not. He seems to think no deal will be removed as an option and MPs will face a choice between deal and delay. Tomorrow there will be more votes on the progress of Brexit, and Mrs May is facing another possible defeat at the hands of Brexiteer Conservatives. A Norway Style Deal Explained - Brexit Explained

10:02
Although there's not much time left it is possible, with an extension, for the UK to reach a new kind of deal with the EU. One of these potential deals is a Norway style deal. Norway isn't an EU member but is in the European Economic Area and European Free Trade Association. Could an agreement like this be close enough for remainers and far enough away for leavers? Theresa May tells MPs to hold their nerve over Brexit

Theresa May has told MPs to hold their nerve as she said she needed more time to persuade Europe to accept changes to her Brexit deal, with Labour accusing her of offering "more excuses and more delays" as the clock ticked relentlessly down towards Brexit day. Brexit Crunch Date Approaches!

04:36
With just 41 days to go until our exit from the European Union, we now hear the press saying that Theresa May has just ten days to save Brexit, or else. PLEASE SUPPORT MY YOUTUBE WORK ON PATREON: http://bit.ly/2oUVQfm OR ON SUBSCRIBESTAR: https://www.subscribestar.com/jeff-taylor My Youtube Community Page: https://goo.gl/tpTxpt FACEBOOK: @JeffTaylorBrexit LIKE THIS? The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has been given ten days to save her Brexit deal or lose a whole tranche of ministers. And those ministers are then reported to be ready to vote for the Cooper/Boles amendment on what is being seen as the Brexit crunch date of the 27th February that would attempt to force the government to go to Brussels to request an Article 50 extension. But this would take a government loss that would lead to ground-breaking backbench initiated legislation being forced through Westminster into an act of parliament against the wishes of the government of the day. This was attempted last month and was defeated by 27 votes, so they may feel a bit more confident now that, with Brexit day fast approaching, more MPs are getting unnecessarily jittery over a no deal Brexit. But to get this proposed amendment through to be effective would probably require the Speaker, John Bercow, to once again put this amendment through to be voted on. It was controversial enough last time and generated a whole flood of points of order in the house. Then there is the fact that it has already been voted down, so what is the justification of re-presenting such a tendentious amendment? And in the end, up comes the question again of would the government ask the Queen not to sign it into law as asking for an extension of the Article 50 negotiating period was not government policy? As I've said before, everything to do with our EU membership has required the UK constitution to be twisted and hacked about to try and shoehorn our country into the EU system, or to try and stop us leaving it. But, looking from the other side, it does mean that we will be another ten days nearer to Brexit Day, with only thirty days left for the Remainers to try their little tricks. And only 17 of those thirty days are normal parliamentary working days! So I would expect the Brexiteers to have already been scouring their copies of the parliamentary rule books and be readying their procedural spanners in order to return the compliment and wreck the Remainer machinery. But before this amendment raises its ugly head, Theresa May's deal has to be voted down - again. You would expect to see the opposition vote en mass against anything Tory and the Conservative Party Brexiteers would also be expected to oppose the government's awful deal. But all of this would also be terminal for the Tories, as its own MPs on both wings would basically be ripping their own party to shreds. And all Corbyn's Labour Party has to do is sit back and vote Theresa May's deal down and watch as the Conservative Party peels itself apart. So, the question is, at the end of the day, what will the Tory Brexiteers do? Will they vote Theresa May's deal down for the good of the country? Or will they vote for her deal to save their party, even the knowledge that it would probably only be a temporary reprieve to buy them time? Interesting times! Corbyn calls on May to bring forward 'coherent' Brexit plan

Theresa May has suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of hardline Brexit supporters who refused to support her approach to leaving the EU. May was not present for the defeat, by 303 votes to 258, in which she again lost control of her party in the crucial final weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU on 29 March. Labour Party amendment to impose meaningful Brexit vote defeated

01:11
Theresa May saw off a Labour Brexit challenge tonight but is staring down the barrel of another humiliation after Tory MPs accused her of a sneaky bid to take no deal off the table. Conservative Eurosceptics including Jacob Rees-Mogg declared they will defy the PM and abstain in a crunch vote on her EU plan - condemning it to a likely defeat. The signal came despite Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay (pictured right) desperately trying to reassure mutinous MPs that no deal is not being taken off the table, warning that Brussels will conclude the UK's 'resolve is weakening'. Mrs May has been pleading for more time to secure concessions from the EU on the Irish border backstop that could win MPs' support for her deal. But her efforts have been derailed by a bitter spat with the Eurosceptic ERG group over the text of the government motion. A Labour amendment to force her to bring her deal back to the Commons by the end of the month regardless of whether negotiations are complete was defeated by margin of 16. Brexit, copyright, and valentines (Tweets of the Week, S2 E21)

03:54
Roses are red, violets are blue, This week it’s Brexit, copyright and lazy rhymes too. This week we are supported by the European Parliament. Worried about Brexit? Have a sense of humour? Dutch? Then let me introduce to the Dutch government’s official Brexit muppet… yes really! Cruelly overlooking the EU’s own fuzzy monster, the large blue muppet is part of a campaign to encourage Dutch companies to prepare for all Brexit scenarios. The Dutch have basically said that 17.4 million Brits voted for the mongrel bipedal offspring of a big brush and a car wash roller, said James Crisp. Adding if this is what they picked, he'd love to see the rejected designs. Staying with Dutch Brexit news, in a simultaneous speech, Nick Gutteridge reported that it was brutal stuff from Dutch PM Rutte who said that Brexit will leave the UK a weakened middling economy stuck out in the Atlantic on its own. And this is supposed to be the UK's most sympathetic friend in Europe, Dave Keating added. Danny Kemp reported that the monster has its own LinkedIn page, but not a proper name. And we couldn’t let this week go without pointing out someone else having trouble with names as Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay meets with European Commission President Jean-Paul Junker. Meanwhile in Strasbourg this week, after several misfires and re-starts, an agreement was finally reached on copyright reform, reported Sam Stolton. Pirate Party MEP Julia Reda says this will need lessly stoke resentment against the EU by ignoring young voters. ALDE MEP Marietje Schaake was also deeply disappointed. However, Rapporteur Axel Voss and other conservative MEPs were pleased. And the Commission’s Digital Vice President Andrus Ansip argued whoever said we were banning memes, was trying to fool you. Sanna Wolk helpfully explained that anyone who thinks copyright is boring has not been involved in the negotiations: Subterfuge, loaded comments, tense expressions. This file had it all. And it was long. Boy was it long. 2 and a half years, 10 trilogues, 52 shadow meetings and 18 technical meetings. Joe McNamee has a theory: The great thing about closed-door, in aformal, unaccountable procedures is that you can make stuff up as you go along, he said. But spare a thought for reporter Laura Kayali who was almost past caring! Finally yesterday was Valentine’s Day. As if any social media user could miss it with the deluge of shhh… I mean… beautiful, heartfelt poetry. Peter Spiegel set the tone. Roses are red but Rome's in a frenzy Did anyone vote for Monti, Letta or Renzi? Sjoerd Douma followed suit. The planet is hot and so are you. Should we keep it that way or tax CO2? NNFCC. Roses are red, violets are blue Poetic structure Is less important than implementing a biobased, circular economy across the UK, EU, and beyond. Ok, perhaps American EU Dude had the right idea in hitting the mute button! So let’s have a quick look at some not so happy couples. Guy Verhofstadt gave British MP Kate Hoey some serious burn after she called him an unelected bureaucrat, saying “Thanks for the feedback. Actually, I was elected by my constituents with over 500k votes.” And tension between Parliament President Antonio Tajani and Commissioner Violeta Bulc certainly ratcheted up after the latter made some pretty tone deaf comments about Croatia and Bulc’s own Slovenia that were interpreted as an Italian claim on territory. Just when we’d sorted out North Macedonia! That’s it for this week, join me again next week for more good times and sick rhymes in the Brussels bubble Twittersphere. #EUtweets

Theresa May keeps plugging her Brexit deal!

How much longer can Theresa May keep trying to push this corpse of a dead deal of hers up an ever steepening incline? It is expected that after her defeat in the Commons yesterday, Theresa May will go back to Brussels to try and salvage her deal. But as far as I can see, the only new thing she will be bringing to the table is a climb-down on demands for legally binding changes to the Irish backstop. Bloomberg says the PM is ready to compromise on this and that the EU could give her a separate document as an annex to the agreement that would expand on the backstop to include review clauses and a commitment to explore technological alternatives. Bloomberg also said that: "Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay told the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, during a private meeting Monday that the government is not pursuing a reopening of the withdrawal agreement." Now, this news will light the blue touch paper amongst Brexiteers. And how on earth does our PM think that bringing back what is in effect just another assurance, will make her deal any more attractive to MPs, let alone the country? And when will those MPs who support this so-called deal wake up and smell the coffee?! The EU is hell-bent on keeping that backstop in place and there can only be one reason for that, which is because it is so good for them and so bad for us! Any MP supporting and voting for this deal is asking us to believe that it is a good deal to be handing over £39 billion quid, control over the future of Northern Ireland, the keys to our security and defence while being forced into ever increasing servitude to Brussels. Now, while the PM pushes on with her deal, we hear that eight of those EU-Centric jokers of government ministers might resign unless the Prime Minister rules out a no deal Brexit, with some saying they'll go by the end of the month if no action is taken to stop the no deal possibility. According to the Evening Standard, those that would resign include Amber Rudd, David Gauke, Greg Clark and David Lidington. While that other EU-centric joker, the chair of the Liaison and Health Select Committees, Tory MP Sarah Wollaston, restated on the BBC Politics Live show at lunchtime today that she would resign the party whip, if the delivery of a WTO exit became government policy. In normal times I would say bring on a general election, but the thought that Jeremy Corbyn and his clowns might just get their sticky fingers on the levers of power fills me with equal dread to the current lot. Never have the lyrics of the 1972 Stealers Wheel song, 'Stuck in the Middle with You', been so apt. You know the line: "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right here I am, "stuck in the middle with EU!" Now there's a meme for you! Now for something new. When the UK leaves the EU, the Eurocrats have so far decided that they won't recognise our stock exchange anymore because it is outside of their regulatory framework. They presumably therefore thought that the City would decamp into the EU tout suite taking all their profits and tax with them. But, EU based asset fund managers are worried that they will end up being hamstrung by an uncompetitive EU market where the dual listing of shares is concerned as, after Brexit, they would not be allowed to trade them in London. But instead of pulling the trade into the bloc, the FT reports that EU fund managers are saying that it would instead be better for them to move the whole show out of the EU and into the City of London. And in another piece of good news, the UK and US have struck a post Brexit deal that replicates the current deal we have with the US as part of the EU, with the International Trade Secretary saying that it will allow us to keep trading as freely as we do today. And finally, just in case you haven't heard, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has called a snap general election for the 28th April because he can't get his budget through. Theresa May grilled on Brexit in Parliament (FULL)

02:17:31
